1 . Kathleen Rooney knew that writing Cher Ami and Major Whittlesey, from the point of view of a pigeon, was a risk. Rooney, perhaps best known for her 2017 bestseller, Lillian Boxfish Takes a Walk, says her interest in a feathered narrator was excited by one of her students at DePaul University, where she is an English professor. “A student named Brian mentioned Cher Ami in a poem. It blew my mind that this pigeon was so heroic and is stuffed and on display in the Smithsonian National Museum of American History.”

Rooney learned that Cher Ami, a British homing pigeon, helped save a group of American troops during a horrific, multi-day World War I battle. The story of this amazing pigeon and the extraordinary man who commanded the battle, Major Charles Whittlesey, was altogether attractive.

In Cher Ami and Major Whittlesey, Charles reflects on his happier prewar days in New York City, where he ran a law firm with a college classmate. When it came time for battle, though, he and his fellows found themselves cut off from supply lines, surrounded by enemy German troops.

Carrier pigeons were the group’s only hope of contacting headquarters and getting the other Americans to stop dropping bombs on them. Cher Ami flew through gunfire to deliver Charles' message, which finally stopped the attack. She lost an eye and a leg, among other wounds, but was eventually able to hobble (蹒跚) on a tiny wooden prosthesis (义肢) that the Army made for her. She lived another year before dying of her injuries in 1919, but in the novel she continues speaking to readers behind glass in the Smithsonian where she’s been since her death.

There’s an interesting lesson to be learned from Charles’ decisions in the battle, too. “He was famous for something we’d describe as passive,” Rooney says. “Once they were in the pocket, he waited as long as he could. I’m an impatient, active person ... His act was stillness, waiting, keeping everybody’s spirits up. The way he did that was amazing.”

Rooney also hopes the book, with its portrayal of the charming and brave Cher Ami, will boost the appreciation of our furry and feathered friends.

A moment later she ran out into the dark night. Before Michaelis could do anything, it was over.

The car, as reported, didn't stop. Michaelis wasn't even sure of its color. He told the policeman later that it was light green. Another car heading for New York stopped and its driver hurried back to where Mrs. Wilson lay dead in the road.

5 . Throughout history, people have promoted stories of curse. Here are some famous ones.

6 . Located in the Bahamas, Andros Island is also known as “The Sleeping Giant”,yet with only about 8.000 people living on it. Now the island has a new luxury resort Caerula Mar Club- which opened this February. The once-abandoned property was discovered by a well- known HGTV reality star couple who transformed it into a hotel. The Canadian design duo Bryan and Sarah Baeumler were vacationing in the Bahamas in the summer of 2017 when they discovered a once-abandoned resort. They instantly decided to purchase it with hopes to transform the 10-acre beachfront property into a luxury hotel.

7 . A ten-year-old New Yorker who was bullied (欺辱) at school is likely making her bullies jealous these days-because how many of them can say they’ve shown a collection of clothing at New York Fashion Week?

Egypt Ufele, who goes by the name Ify, didn’t let those fifth-grade bullies at her Queens school keep her down, and instead took the very thing they made fun of her for and used it to make a name for herself in the fashion world.

“I turned negative attention into positive attention,” she said, shortly after showing her collection at Fashion Week. Ify said that some of the other kids would give her a hard time for her weight. Instead of changing herself because of, their unkind words, though, she took the word “chubby” back — creating her own plus-size fashion line that she calls ChubiiLine.

“People tell me I’m good at fashion,” Ify said. “Sometimes I give my models ideas, and then we agree on it, and I end up making it.”

Ify’s been doing the work all along and, according to her grandma Nellie Rembert, takes the process very seriously. First, the fifth grader started sewing clothes for her toys by hand. Then, she graduated to grandma’s sewing machine, designing clothes for kids.

“She comes out of school, goes straight into homework, and when other kids are out playing she’s either sewing clothes or she’s creating new ideas,” her mom, Dr. Reba Perry, said.

The results — an African-inspired collection — have earned her attention from anti-bullying groups and fashion lovers. Though other children have shown collections at Fashion Week in the past, Ify is the only one to have dressed plus-size women.

She even helped them get ready backstage, tying them up and making sure they were styled perfectly. “Being a designer and being at fashion shows are really exciting because you get a lot of attention, and a lot of people ask you what inspires you,” she said.

8 . On the first day of school we were challenged to get to know a new classmate. I was looking around when a gentle hand touched my shoulder. I found a little old lad with a warm smile.

She said, “Hi, handsome! I’m Rose. I’m 87 years old. Can I give you a hug (拥抱)?” I laughed and heartily responded, “Of course!”

“Why are you in college at such a young, innocent (天真的) age?”1 asked.

She jokingly replied, “I’m here to meet a rich husband, get married, have children, and then travel around.”

“No, seriously,” I asked. I was curious why she took on this challenge at this age.

“I always dreamed of having a college education and now I’m getting one!” she told me. We became instant friends.

Over the year, Rose became a campus icon (偶像) and she easily made friends wherever she went. She loved to dress up and she enjoyed the attention from the other

students. She was living it up. At the end of the term we invited Rose to speak at our football banquet. I’ll never forget what she taught us.

“We do not stop playing because we are old; we grow old because we stop playing. Here are the secrets to staying young. You have to laugh and find humor every day. You’ve got to have a dream. When you lose your dreams, you die. We have many people walking around who are dead, and they don’t even know it!” she said.

“There is a huge difference between growing older and growing up. Anybody can grow older. That doesn’t take any talent or ability,” she added. “But growing up requires finding the opportunity in change. The elderly usually don't have regrets for what they did, but rather for things they did not do.”

One week after graduation that year, Rose died peacefully in her sleep. She taught us by example that it’s never too late to be all you can possibly be.

9 . Michael McFarlen, one Michigan chef and the Vice President of Food and Beverage at FireKeepers Casino Hotel, couldn't stand throwing away perfectly good food any more since he knew how many people in his community faced food insecurity. So he decided to do something.

At one point, McFarlen decided to get involved with the South Central Food Bank of Michigan Inc. to help give back to those in need. After that, he knew he had to do more to help his community and reduce his food waste.

McFarlen came up with a plan to open a restaurant in the community that would also help support a food pantry (储藏室).After presenting the idea to FireKeepers leadership, they immediately approved the plan and agreed to help McFarlen realize his dream.

In April of 2016, the owners of the FireKeepers Casino Hotel bought Fire Station No. 4, a historic firehouse near downtown that had been closed for years and was due to be pulled down. Apart from providing the typical pantry goods, McFarlen wanted to figure out a way to lower food waste at the Casino Hotel. "We flash-freeze food from the buffet (自助餐)and make family trays out of them. Once packaged, the food is delivered to food pantries in the area.” George explained.

10 . Mr. Utterson was a lawyer who was good-natured to his friends. His companions were usually distant relations from his own family, or friends that he had known for a long time.

One friend in particular was Mr. Richard Enfield, a distant relative, and a well-known man in London. The two men were very different, but they always went for a long Sunday walk together. People who saw them out on their walk reported that they rarely spoke. However, they would even cancel other appointments in order to go and enjoy their walks without interruption.

One day, while they were out on their walk together, they were strolling (漫步) along a small quiet street. It was all clean and attractive except for one building two storeys high.

As they passed, Mr. Enfield asked Mr. Utterson if he had ever noticed the dirty door, because it reminded him of a very strange story.

“No,” said Mr. Utterson. “What story was that?”

“Well,” replied Mr. Enfield. “Once, I was coming home this way at about 3 am on a dark winter’s night, and the whole area was very quiet and deserted. But then suddenly I saw two people. We all told him that we would make a lot of trouble for him if he did not pay for his actions.”

“The man agreed to pay one hundred pounds to the family. As he did not have that amount of money with him, he said he had to go and get a cheque. He went to the house with the door we are looking at now, and came out with another man’s cheque for almost one hundred pounds at four o'clock in the morning. Therefore w made him stay at my house until the banks opened. Then we went to cash the cheque. I handed it over myself and was sure that it would be a forgery, but to my surprise, it was real”
