We were in Sri Lanka when the tsunami hit on Boxing Day 200 I was 15 and my brother was 17 at the time. Sadly, we lost our parents in that disaster.
Three years before the tsunami, our parents said we were to be removed from our structured school system in England and enrolled in what they believed to be the best education form: the university of life. As a family, we traveled the world, jumping from county to county and doing volunteer work along the way.
In the years after the tsunami, my brother and I were still both zealous travelers and often set off separately on our own adventures. It was our travels that inspired us to help others. We’d seen various products people wanted when they were on the move and we knew that if we created them, the profits from our business could go towards supporting those in need, especially kids.
So in 2012, we founded Gandys. From our bedroom in Brixton, we designed a range of clothing and accessories (配饰), with a part of the profits from each sale going towards helping children around the world by building Kids’ campuses and offering support including education, medication and healthy food. The first campus we built was in Sri Lanka, and then the next one was built.
The stand-out moment for Gandys came in October 2019. To mark the 15th anniversary of the tsunami, we opened our third campus in Nepal, a country that has seen its fair share of terrible events.
Help is still needed long after the event itself, but people often lose interest after a year or so and move on to other things. That’s why we feel it’s important to build lasting projects which support communities for the years ahead.

3 . Tired of underpaid jobs and inconvenient hours, three entrepreneurial (富于企业家精神的) McLean teens decided to start their own company.
Their new company, TeenServ aims to solve teenage unemployment with a platform that matches students and community members who need short-term assistance with various tasks Through TeenServ, residents sign up to post jobs they need done. Teens signed up to work can choose to accept a job depending on their schedules and work preferences. Website users can pick up shifts wherever and whenever they want, making it convenient for hectic schedules.
A year ago, Jack Lannin, Quin Frew and Ben Jeannot worked as lifeguards at a local pool. Lanin told Tysons Reporter that they were upset when a pay change “almost cut their salary in half,” and they wanted to find another job but there were few options. Then they came up with the idea for TeenServ. “Aside from getting a real job, refereeing sports or yard work, there isn’t rally a good way to make money,” Lannin said, adding that even becoming a referee requires a significant sat-up cost for teens — around $70 — to pay for training and a uniform.
They started out by going door to door and asking community members if they would pay teens fair wages for short-term yard work. Soon enough, they began gathering opportunities. With help from an entrepreneurship class at McLean High School and feedback from teens, the students were able to turn their idea into a reality. So far, the website has employed more than 200 teens, according to Lannin. TeenServ pays students up to $18 per hour — well above Virginia’s minimum wage of $7.25.
The business is focused on mostly McLean for now, but TeenServ’s owners hope to expand around Fairfax County. That involves building up a base of teen workers before allowing residents to post jobs elsewhere in the county. After all, if residents need time-specific jobs done, they can’t be the ones waiting.

Nathan and Madison Donovan were in the market for a car to drive so she could begin working at a downtown call center. Nathan has been unable to work since breaking his back in a car accident several years ago, and since the bus system in Moncton, New Brunswick doesn't run at night, Madison needed the car to go back to work and get the small family out of social assistance.
When they found an online loan company, they applied for a car loan of $7,000. The company required $600 as collateral (抵押品), and the couple spent all their savings in the hope of being one step closer to getting an automobile.
Days after they made the $600 payment, however, the company’ website was taken down. and the couple’s calls went unanswered. Heartbroken, they contacted CBC News telling their story as a means of preventing other families from making the same mistake. Fortunately, their willingness to save others from the scam (骗局) ended up paying off; A man named Denis LeBlanc had been in the middle of trying to sell his 2007 Volkswagen Jetta when he heard Nathan’s story on the radio.
Denis and his wife had been trying to sell the car for at least $3,700, but they had only received several lowball (低报价) offers from online buyers. By that time, they had already been considering simply giving the car away to charity — so when they heard about Nathan’s situation, they knew just what to do.
Nathan was hesitant to visit a stranger giving away a perfectly good car, but when he showed up, the LeBlancs were true to their word. With great gratitude, Nathan simply got in the Jetta and drove away. The good deed had entirely changed his family’s fortunes for the better. LeBlanc, meanwhile, was able to teach his kids a valuable lesson about helping others who are less fortunate.

5 . Katie always wanted to be a performer. She, the youngest of the three kids from Cleveland, was crazy about musicals and Disney movies from an early age and would often watch them singing with her mom, Karen. However, Katie’s happy childhood took a turn when her mother was diagnosed (诊断) with cancer. When the doctor informed the family that Karen’s disease was terminal, they decided to make a trip to Disney World.
The family spared no expense for their once-in-a-lifetime vacation and stayed at Disney’s hotel for eight nights. They spent their days in the parks, seeing the sights, greeting characters, all the while pushing Karen in her wheelchair and watching her face light up with joy. They all shared in the merriment of experiencing the parks for the first time with Karen. The trip to Disney World at the height of Karen’s battle with cancer allowed them to escape into a world of magic and laughter. This was the day Katie decided she wanted to work for Disney.
Sadly, Karen lost the battle and died later, but the whole family remembered her every day and often thought of that Disney vacation. Katie went on to go after her dream. After she received her degree in musical theater, she struggled for years, working as a waitress and trying to be a performer. Her hard work finally paid off when she was hired to work for Disney.
As a Disney performer, Katie is aware that many other families visit the parks and have similar stories to her own. She encourages everyone, especially children, who may be experiencing a hard time. “Every moment is meant for you, even the painful ones,” she says. “It’s just like in your favorite Disney movie: There is always some kind of conflict or hardship or pressure. Reading broadens our horizons and gives us wisdom. Reading can also be a bridge bonding family members.
Rose is my daughter. I read stories to her every night when she was a little girl. So I had her captivated by books when she was at an early age. For example, almost every night she would go to bed early, waiting for my reading. When Rose was about eight, we changed our routine. We took turns selecting our books and reading out loud.
There was no regular pattern in the books selected. I remember that we began with Robert Louis Stevenson’s Treasure Island, enjoying the company of those rough sailors and stumbling (结结巴巴地读) over the eighteenth-century seamen’s dialect. But we loved the book, and learned a lot about pirates daily life, adventures, tricks, greed and so on. We later went through many books, like the chick lit series.
In due course Rose grew up and left for McGill University in Montreal. She was educated in French and was enthusiastic about speaking the language. Her first visit home was at Christmas.
There was a gift from her, an audiobook with six cassettes. It was Sophie Kinsella’s Shopaholic Takes Manhattan, read by Rose. Her reading was interrupted occasionally by a giggle, and her voice made me remember how happily Rose and I read together in our bedroom every night when she was a kid.
As I write this, Rose is a third-year medical student at Dalhousie University. Now she is interested in medicine while I am interested in history. However, we manage to combine our different personal interests. We recommend selected reading materials to each other. We are currently loving The Crimson Portraitby Jody Shields, a well written novel about the development of plastic surgery during World War I. Our first written collaboration an article on Canadian medical history, will be published this year.

Katie always felt there had to be something more to life than just partying, buying clothes and driving a cool car. She finally discovered what she was missing out on when she traveled halfway around the world to help poor kids.
When she was 14, she discovered a club at school called Operation Smile, an organization that supports free operation for facially deformed (面部畸形的) kids in developing countries. At that time, she joined Operation Smile just to satisfy her school’s community service requirement.
After working with Operation Smile for a while, she learned different countries have different deformities. The more she learned about what affects kids around the world, the more she wanted to go abroad with Operation Smile.
At 15, she was chosen to go abroad. Before her trip, she attended a weekend “mission (使命) training”. That’s when she was told she’d be going to the Philippines. Although she was excited, one night during training, she broke down in tears. She felt pity for all those unfortunate kids. After her arrival in the Philippines, she met the kids waiting for operation, and they were running around and happy. It seemed normal. Her job was to play with the kids before their operation to help them feel more relaxed. She also went to nearby schools to hand out toothbrushes and teach students how to brush their teeth.
When their operation was over, the kids were always overjoyed, but their parents were blown away. Sometimes they couldn’t even recognize their kids because their appearances had improved so much. They would cry and hug the doctors and nurses and give them presents — they were so grateful.
