文章大意:这是一篇新闻报道。文章介绍了一个11岁的小男孩在一天之内拯救了两个人的生命。

1 . An 11-year-old Oklahoma boy is being called a hero after his quick thinking saved two lives in a single day.

The first incident occurred during the school day. Johnson jumped into action after one of his classmates at the 6th Grade Academy accidentally swallowed a water bottle cap after attempting to open it with his mouth. Johnson “immediately sprinted over” to the choking child and performed the Heimlich maneuver (海姆里克腹部冲击法). From the account of the witnesses, when he did it, the bottle cap popped out.

Johnson said he learned how to do the Heimlich maneuver on YouTube, and advised others to do the same. “Just in case you’re in the situation I was in, you can know what to do,” he said.

But Johnson’s heroism didn’t end there.

After school, Johnson spotted a woman with a walker attempting to escape a burning home. The boy said the fire began at the back of the building, but it eventually got to the front of the house. That’s when Johnson jumped into action. The sixth-grader quickly realized the woman was “not moving fast enough” and rushed across the street to help her to her truck. “It was a disabled lady and she was walking out of her house,” Johnson said of the incident. “She was on her porch. But I thought, being a good citizen, I would cross and help her get into her truck and leave.”

LaToya Johnson, the boy’s mother, said that her son’s actions weren’t entirely surprising. In addition to the boy’s dream of becoming an EMT (Emergency Medical Technician), LaToya said her brother. Wendell Johnson, is an EMT.

“I’m just a proud mom,” she said.

文章大意:本文是一篇记叙文。文章讲述了一条名叫Major的狗在主人发病的时候成功拨打急救电话,挽救了主人生命的故事。

2 . A retired United States soldier named Terry McGlade, who had served in Iraq and Afghanistan, says his dog Major is a hero. He is specially trained to sense when McGlade is about to have a seizure (突然发作), get his phone and dial 911 for help.

When Major had recently sensed an incident about to happen, and McGlade collapsed and hit the floor, Major was able to get to McGlade’s phone, and more or less bite on the phone which is specially set up so that when multiple buttons are pressed and held in, it goes into emergency call mode (模式), and dials 911.

“He was actually able to get my phone out of my pocket,” McGlade said.

The 911 operators who got the call from Major said they never heard him bark or anything. However, they could hear what sounded like a confused man in the background, and did get quite doubtful after quite a few calls from McGlade’s cell phone kept coming in. Quite clearly, Major was using his leg and also stepping on the screen to get the phone to dial for help.

After Major was sure someone would be on their way to help, he then made his way out to the front of the house to wait. When the police and ambulance arrived, he led them into the house and right to McGlade, still in danger.

“I probably would have been in severe trouble if he hadn’t called,” McGlade said.

McGlade was taken to the hospital, where he was kept overnight for observation, but thanks to his best friend, and now hero of the day, Major. He is feeling much better, and will make a full recovery with little risk of lasting damage from this particular incident.

1. What does the underlined word “collapsed” in paragraph 2 probably mean?
A.Slept.B.Fell.C.Cried.D.Ran.
2. How did Major manage to make the phone go into emergency call mode?
A.By seeking somebody else nearby for help.B.By sending a text message to the 911 operator.
C.By keeping barking at the other side of the phone.D.By biting and stepping on the buttons of the phone.
3. What do we know about the incident?
A.Major had made one call to the 911 center before the ambulance came.
B.Operators in the 911 center were confused by Major’s calls.
C.Major guided the doctor directly to where McGlade lay.
D.McGlade has completely recovered.
4. Which of the following can best describe Major?

文章大意:这是一篇记叙文。文章讲述了第一次世界大战爆发时,美国士兵Suleyman救了一个女孩,取名Flora。后来Flora被送入孤儿院,两人分开。多年后,两人再次取得了联系。

4 . During the 1930s, the Great War broke out. A 25-year-old American soldier probably never thought that his life would change forever when he volunteered to go to France.

One night while the American unit was returning to the base after a bloody fight, Suleyman stumbled (绊倒) into the ground and noticed a bit of movement from the bush. Being stuck between two choices either its enemy or an animal, Suleyman found a five-year-old girl from the bushes shivering (颤抖) with cold and utmost fear. Due to the atrocity of the war, the girl was abandoned by her family and the whole village was killed.

During the war, it was impossible to find the child’s family so Suleyman took this little French girl under his wings and gave her an American name Flora which means like the flower. Soon, Flora became the apple of the eye of everyone living in the army camp.

For one and a half years, Flora and Suleyman became inseparable; however, every fairy tale comes to an end. When the war ended, Suleyman was sent back to the USA, while Flora was put in an orphanage (孤儿院), the Normandy School, which was founded by the American government for orphaned French children to have an education.

For years, Suleyman always thought about Flora. When the French National Olympic Team was playing in the Summer Olympics in Los Angeles in 1984, Suleyman gazed through the audience on TV, hoping to catch a glimpse of Flora, but he never could.

At the age of 85, Suleyman attended the 60th anniversary reception of the Great War where Suleyman shared his story with American and French officials. After hearing his story, a French journalist started to investigate the story, and all government files were read in detail. The moment the journalist helped dial the number, in tears, Flora said Suleyman was her hero, and everything came flooding back to her.

B.Flora was liked very much by every soldier living in the army camp.
C.Flora liked to eat apples in the eyes of the soldiers in the army camp.

A.Because Flora might be in the French team.
B.Because Suleyman was greatly interested in sports.

D.Because Suleyman wanted to travel to Los Angeles.
3. What can we learn from the passage?
A.Flora and Suleyman became attached to each other.
B.Flora was sent to an orphanage called Normandy.
C.Suleyman found some animals in the bush.
D.Suleyman would never see Flora again.
4. Which can serve as the best possible title for the text?

I was about to throw them away while my mother stopped me, say that there was an old clothes recycling center in our community. I told that some of the recycled clothes would be donated by people in need after being sorted. I eventually realize it was a great opportunity to protect the environment and helping people.
