2 . Many graduation ceremonies look different. But for Melody Ormond, it looked different because of the classmate who graduated alongside her—her grandmother, 75-year-old Pat Ormond. They both went to the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga (UTC) and graduated together.

Pat took her first college class at Kennesaw State University 42 years ago. After one semester, she dropped out to move to Chattanooga, Tennessee, where she spent the next several decades working as an accountant and raising a family. While she did take an occasional class at UTC, she says her family continued to encourage her to go back to finish her degree, especially after she retired. She agreed when her granddaughter decided to move to study psychology at UTC after a year at Berea College in Kentucky. They both entered UTC with enough college credits to make graduating together a possibility.

Pat and Melody graduated on November 20 as part of UTC’s 2020 class. The achievement has also made Pat somewhat of a celebrity.

“We are so proud to have graduates like Melody Ormond and her grandmother, Pat Ormond, in the UTC class of 2020,” said Steven R. Angle, UTC Chancellor,” Together, they personify the determination, commitment and love for lifelong learning we encourage in every UTC graduate.”

Pat hopes that she can be an example to other non-traditional college students who want to get their degrees. “Learning never stops,” Pat said. “That’s something that my father taught me when I was young. No matter what you do, learning never stops. Even if it’s auditing (旁听) a few classes, there’s always that option. “Pat isn’t planning to stop anytime soon. She’s already working on another degree — a bachelor’s degree in history.

Meanwhile, her granddaughter, who is hunting jobs, is interested in getting a master’s degree in clinical psychology so she can become a lawyer. But she says she’s in no rush. Her nana has taught her that she has plenty of time.

6 . Everyone can be angry. But if you take the time to actually examine your anger instead of just “feeling” angry, you’ll have a better understanding of yourself. Knowing why you feel so angry can provide you with some surprising answers. These answers can enable you to suddenly grow spiritually and mentally.

I can give you a personal example. I went to a meeting once and I was verbally attacked over an application I supported at my workplace. Various people went on and on about how terrible this system was and that it never worked. That didn’t bother me that much. I was used to that but one of the comments that was said was, “Your job is pointless.” This really upset me and at the time, I was absolutely furious(发怒地) with that comment.

I was so angry and upset that they would treat me that way. Once I took the time to think about what was really making me so mad. I learned a lot. I realized that the comment was more true than I wanted to admit. In the big scheme of things, my job was pointless. It wasn’t what I really wanted to be doing with my life and this was what frustrated me the most. Here I was pouring part of my heart and soul into a job I didn’t even really want to do. I was using it as a crutch(拐杖) because I didn’t have the confidence in myself to take the scary road towards what I really wanted to do. As soon as I realized that, a lot of my anger just melted away. I also realized that I needed to start focusing on what I really wanted to do.

I now consider this incident as a great gift. It got me back on track to moving in the direction I wanted to go with my life. I probably wouldn’t be where I am today if I hadn’t taken the time to figure out why I was really so angry.

1. What made the author angry at the meeting?
A.The system of the company was terrible.B.Someone said his job is insignificant.
C.The policy of the company didn’t work.D.The application he supported was of no effect.
2. What brought down the anger of the author?
A.The apology someone made at the meeting.
B.The crutch he used to take the scary road.
C.His awareness of the fact that the comment was true.
D.The courage he had to overcome the challenges.
3. Why did the author consider the incident as a gift?
A.It brought him back on track to the goal.
B.It helped him get promoted to a higher position.
C.It helped him change his character since then.
D.It provided him with confidence in his career.
4. What can be the best title of the passage?
A.How to Cope with Verbal Attack in a Company
B.Avoid Being Pointless at Work
C.Anger Is Harmful to Health
D.Understanding Yourself Better Through Anger

Life is Good Clothing is a 100 million-dollar company run by brothers Bert and John Jacobs. Like any other businessmen, they went through a lot of failures. However, the idea

“Life is good” from their mother kept them going and inspired them to build a clothing company that is now very successful.

In 1988, Bert and Jacobs took a seven-week road trip from California to Boston. The brothers said this trip changed their lives forever as they looked back on their childhood. According to the Jacobs, their childhood was perfectly-imperfect. Their house did not have heating but they were taught to always see the good in things.

They remembered playing outside all day and when it was dinner time, they would gather around the dinner table. Their mother would say to them, “Tell me something good that happened today.” Their father had a near — death accident which caused severe damage to his right hand. The accident made their father develop a terrible temper (脾气),but their mother would always sing to them and read them children’s stories. “That optimism was something our family always had, even when we had little else,” the brothers said.

During the trip, they tried to figure out what they wanted to do with their lives and decided to run a clothing business. They started selling T-shirt designs in street fairs around Boston. Their design was just a simple drawing of a stick figure with the phrase “Life is good.”

Their small business didn’t turn out so well, but the two brothers did not give up. Then they changed their target audience. This time, they tried to sell their T-shirts to college students, going to different schools every night. Again it did not work. To figure out what they had been doing wrong, Bert and John held beer parties, where they asked their friends for their honest opinions. In return , they could enjoy free beer and amusing stories from the brothers. Again this did not seem to work and they were running out of money.

8 . Why is being alone essential to personal growth?

For many people, being alone is a negative state of being. It often carries a social stigma (污名) that equals isolation or being an outsider. Of course, spending time with people you love is extremely important to your well-being.     1     Only if you’re connected to yourself can you become stronger.

Aloneness enhances your creativity. When you are alone, you are more likely to stay true to yourself and try new things that you don’t have the courage to do around others.     2     Picasso or Van Gogh wouldn’t have created the masterpieces if they hadn’t taken enough solitary (独自的) time to experiment regardless of others’ thoughts.

Being alone also prevents you from burning out. Sometimes you may wonder why you easily feel tired.     3     Especially for people who go to work every day, it is unavoidable to feel exhausted when you have to deal with work, family, and your own passions at the same time. How about giving yourself a few solitary moments? It doesn’t matter how you choose to spend those moments alone. As long as they relieve your stress, they’re worthwhile.

4     When you take time to understand yourself, pursue your personal growth, and follow your dreams, you’ll definitely discover the truth about yourself. Regardless of how well you may think you know yourself, learning how to be alone will allow you to deepen your self-awareness.

Being alone makes you a more creative person and helps with personal growth.     5

A.But it’s necessary to learn how to be alone.
B.Aloneness is often associated with mad artists.
C.It is impossible to be alone with the demands of daily life.
D.Aloneness frees us from the limits of the world’s opinions.
E.Self-exploration is perhaps the biggest benefit of aloneness.
F.One reason could be not giving yourself enough solitary time.
G.So spend some time alone today to become a brighter and better person.

10 . All left-handed humans have not had it easy in the world. In many cultures and in the dark ages, left-handed people have generally been seen as the devil.

The word “left” in English comes from the Anglo-Saxon word “lyft”,which means weak or broken. The Oxford English Dictionary defines “left-handed” as meaning defective, awkward or clumsy.     1     A “left-handed compliment” and a “left-handed marriage” can be set as examples. The former does not mean sincere praise but indicates an insult. The latter, as you may notice, refers to an illegal or informal marriage, which, in particular, involves one side of royal or noble birth and the other of lower rank.

In some certain cultures, things go beyond that.     2     In Nigeria, for instance, taking or giving anything to anyone with your left hand is assumed that you lack home training.

3     Many people around you in China, if asked, would tell you they were forced by their parents or teachers, to write with their right hand. Strangely enough, none of those elders can say what an actual problem there is with left-handedness. If it has to do with the fear of that child not being prosperous, there are a lot of left-handed personalities doing well and breaking grounds. The possible explanation here maybe lies in their long- held prejudice.     4

Two-thirds of the world still view left-handedness as a shortcoming but it isn't.     5    That is what C. R. Manske points out, “Life without left-handed people wouldn't be right. ”

A.And that is not the only case.
B.The following two examples can best reflect this point.
C.A tiny gesture or movement with the left hand can mean a lot.
D.Namely, people tend to believe in common ideas instead of the reality.
E.The way forward for the left-handers is for them to be accepted as they are.
F.Certain phrases in English suggest a rather negative view of “left-handedness”.
G.In other words, different deep-rooted beliefs originate from different cultures.
