4 . I always wanted to be extraordinary at something. Not just as in, “Great job, Jimbo!” No, I wanted to be best-in-class, awe-inspiring, tiptop; a world-famous genius, like Michael Phelps or Mark Zuckerberg.
Unfortunately, my version of reality did not quite line up with thisdelusionalvision. I was a good swimmer, but I peaked at the collegiate State Championships level. My academic record was pretty solid, but I never would have made it into one of those ivy-league schools.
Though I rose to above-average status in a couple of areas, the disappointing truth was that I would never amount to anything more than a mid-sized fish in a small pond. God apparently had other plans.
What drove me crazy, though, was the superstar talent thrown in my face at every turn. Some folks just seemed to get an unfair intensive dose (剂量) of it. Why couldn’t I be like Bernie William, the famed New Yorkees player who also happens to be a world-class jazz guitar virtuoso (艺术大师)?
Some say greatness is simply a function of putting in the practice time. Around ten thousand hours, to be precise, according to author Malcolm Gladwell. I don’t question the theory of devoting extraordinary efforts to developing one’s expertise, but it seems that raw talent is equally important. You either have it or you don’t.
I’ve heard that as people approach middle age, their life satisfaction increases because they begin to accept the gap between the expectations for themselves and the reality. After a few decades of frustration without the desired results, we eventually come to terms with how our lives turned out, even if it falls far short of our idealized youthful expectation.
Hope bends, it seems.

5 . The signs appeared practically overnight. They appeared everywhere. Each featured just a few uplifting words in simple black type:“Don’t Give Up. ”“You Are Worthy of Love. ”At the high school in Newberg,Oregon, two students killed themselves that year,so the town of 25,000 instantly understood the messages. For days, what no one could figure out was who had planted them.
Amy Wolff had. She felt necessary to address Newberg’s grief. She planted the signs anonymously(匿名)because she wanted them to be about their message, not any one person.
Yet as Wolff saw the deep influence her signs had on her neighbors, she decided to share her message publicly. Instantly, her mailbox was flooded with requests for more signs. She asked a friend, graphic designer Jessica Brittell,to print more. “We decided to just ride it out, just keep going until the orders stop,”says Wolff.
That was in May 2017. Since then, the Don’t Give Up Movement launched by Wolff has spread from Newberg to the hearts and yards of people in every state and several countries. Wolff charges only the cost of materials and shipping. “It’s a terrible business decision if we wanted to function like a business,”she says.
One of the most heartening elements of the Don’t Give Up Movement is that it has gone viral in a remarkably human way. People have taken to planting the signs in their lawns, taking selfies, and then posting them to share.
“It was the best feeling in the world that I could have an impact outside of school by using these products,”says a teacher,in Texas teaching a lesson in unity after his classroom moved online. “This was a good way to let them know that we care even when we can’t see them. ”
Wolff's message is about to grow yet again. “But there has never been a more fierce backdrop to the power of hope and sympathetic action than right now,”Wolff shares.

7 . As my husband and I drove down a country road, we passed a fire station with a sign that read, "Are you ready for the next storm?” Our area had just been in the path of Hurricane Irma, causing downed trees and outages. We were stuck in the dark and cut off from the outside world.
We have had our share of storms in the past--a snowstorm and other heavy snows that knocked down trees, sometimes up to a week at a time. Those days in a cold house weren't fun, but we learned so much from those early storms, things that made later storms easier to bear.
Now we have stored up flashlights, lanterns and candles. We bought a battery-operated radio to keep up with the news. We stocked up on batteries so that we'd have plenty for extended power failures. We make sure our grill(烤架) is ready and its tank is full, and we purchase food that can be easily prepared and then cooked or heated on the grill. And we don't forget to buy emergency chocolate! We have book lights to read in the dark. We keep our car gas tanks full and have emergency cash on hand.
We're ready for the next storm, but we wouldn't have learned to do all those things if we hadn't encountered a storm in the past. The same is true spiritually. Those little storms in our lives are never fun, but they prepare us for the big storms--the big trials--that will come our way, They can teach us some valuable lessons.
Are you ready for the next storm? Now is the time to get ready. . . not when the storm arrives.

8 . What brings you happiness?
Pride isn't necessarily a terrible thing. It can bring you confidence and self-assurance, which are two great qualities that can help you lead a happy life.
When you think about addiction, you might think of alcohol or drug addiction. But there are countless other forms of addiction, too. You could be addicted to work, sugar, video games, drama, or even a harmful relationship.
It's also important to recognize that leaving your comfort zone is a good, although often unwanted idea. If you never leave your comfort zone, you'll never grow. Even though something can make you feel uncomfortable at first, it will benefit you in the long run.

10 . “The movie American Sniper is on. ”I said to my husband.
We decided to watch, thinking it would take our minds off my husband’s situation at work. He had been working with the same organization for about twenty-three years, and the management,he suspected, was preparing to let him go. The signs were pretty clear and I felt his pain.
I wondered if American Sniper was the wrong movie to watch and considered changing the channel. Maybe something lighter was good. A family comedy with laughter would have been more uplifting for my husband.
We turned the volume down as our son James was studying in the next room.
“You know this movie is based on a true story,”I said, half thinking about my husband’s situation and half watching the movie.
“Yes. ”he replied. “It’s based on Chris Kyle’s book. ”
I thought about all the young men who had lost their lives in Iraq. “Some of those boys were only a couple of years older than James,”I said.
As I watched the movie,I began to realize how small our problems really were. “You know, other couples are wondering if their sons are safe on a battlefield, and here we are with our son perfectly safe in the next room. ”
Over the next hour, the mood in our room changed from depression to gratitude. How fortunate we were ! Our son was healthy and safe. We had a roof over our heads and could walk outside without worrying whether there would bebullets(子弹)flying through the air. As for my husband’s job,he could do something else—something that he would love.
Looking at the big picture and moving from“depression to reflection”have made all the difference.
