1 . Turning around corners, weaving through traffic, every second matters. It is neither a street race nor a 007 chase, but the risky journey of a sushi (寿司) roll.

The streets of China are filled with delivery drivers racing noodles, sandwiches and soups across cities. While the everyday consumer may find these services convenient, most do not realize the true cost of their delivery. How much is that late-night snack really worth?

Strict time limits are the main concern for delivery drivers. The Chinese delivery app Meituan decreased the maximum time allowance from 50 minutes to 30 or even 20. Time literally means money: Surpassing the limit can result in fines, which are paid to the firm rather than to the consumers. Yet, beyond fines, there is often a greater cost. According to Pandaily News, one delivery worker is injured or killed in accidents every 2.5 days in Shanghai and, sadly, companies seldom provide insurance claims when their time limits lead to these consequences. Drivers are pushed to break traffic rules and risk their lives so your sushi is not a minute late.

Furthermore, low wages and extensive working hours exacerbate these issues. Some companies in China take advantage of the economic inequalities between China’s large cities and less developed interior to offer extremely low pay to migrant delivery drivers while demanding long hours. Yet these long hours and low pay are common throughout the global delivery industry. In the United States, advertised earnings of $22 per hour are largely exaggerated while workers complain that food delivery apps rarely give them all their tips.

What is the solution? First, consumers should recognize what is behind their impossibly cheap and fast delivery: exploitation. We should expect more from the delivery app companies and less from their drivers. That is, we should pay more and wait longer while only ordering from companies who offer their drivers fair wages, insurance and a safe working environment. In the end, your sushi is just not worth it.

1. Who will be paid the fines for a delayed delivery?
A.The delivery firm.B.The delivery worker.
C.The sushi restaurant.D.The ordinary consumer.
2. What does the underlined word “exacerbate” in paragraph 4 mean?
A.Integrate.B.Comprise.C.Worsen.D.Alleviate.
3. Why does the author mention the “earnings of $22 per hour” in the US?
A.To indicate that delivery drivers shouldn’t expect much.
B.To emphasize that delivery companies should provide insurance.
C.To prove that the pay and working environment are better in the US.
D.To show that low pay and overwork are common issues in the industry.
4. Which of the following is the best title for the text?
A.The Harm of Delivery ServicesB.The True Cost of Convenient Deliveries
C.The Overrated Popularity of SushiD.The Benefits and Problems of Delivery Apps

3 . While traditional wisdom tells us that we should eagerly catch every opportunity that comes our way, playing a little hard to get has its advantages. Studies have shown that opportunities are seen to be more valuable as they become less available, according to Robert Cialdini, a leading expert on influence, who said “What the scarcity principle says is that people are more attracted to rare opportunities.”

Appearing available can work against you, according to Jeremy Nicholson, a social psychologist. If you’re excited about a work opportunity, it indicates that you are in low demand.

“Making something harder to get,” Dr. Nicholson said, “tends to increase at least the perception of value.” If you are meeting with hiring managers or potential clients, Dr. Nicholson recommends that responding in a way that respects their interest without being too eager. Dr. Nicholson advises, with responses like: “I do have a couple of other projects to deal with. However, I could do this for you if you want.”

“It’s easy to become excited when an opportunity presents itself,” Ms. Ryan, founder of Human Workplace, said, “but remember that your power in any negotiation is related to your ability to walk away. Don’t accept an offer before fully considering the opportunity.” Once you have interest, turn that into diligence. Ms. Ryan recommends reading up on the organization from third-party perspectives, and checking out job-search websites to see what employees and ex-employees say about it. Keep in mind: The goal is to approach any negotiation cautiously and with a clear head.

Appearing less available isn’t about limiting our enthusiasm, but about trusting in our own self-worth so we can be proactive, experts say. This means mindfully transforming our excitement into strategy. “Emphasizing the uniqueness of your resources and your cooperative approach can help you more quickly advance your goals,” said Shirli Kopelman, a professor at the Ross School of Business at the University of Michigan.

1. Why is it necessary for us to appear scarce when we face opportunities?
A.Because we should strictly follow the principle about scarcity.
B.Because we should eagerly grasp opportunities coming our way.
C.Because we should value opportunities in the competitive society.
D.Because we should show rare opportunities to increase our advantages.
2. Which of the following statements is the suggestion given by Ms. Ryan?
A.Being eager enough and ready.B.Being cautious and clear-headed.
C.Being confident and interested.D.Being skillful and accomplished.
3. What does the underlined word “proactive” mean?
A.Accessible.B.Strategic.C.Enthusiastic.D.Limited.
4. According to Shirli Kopelman, which is the best way to help us achieve our goals?
A.Not being too hard on our career.
B.Not controlling our enthusiasm.
C.Applying excitement to negotiations.
D.Stressing scarcity and cooperation ways.

5 . As a boy, John Kerr wanted to be a fireman or a park ranger Looking back on that childhood dream, he says, “This is exactly what I was longing for.”

Instead, after graduation, he spent four decades at WGBH in Boston, one of the public broadcasting stations. He retired in 2005 at the age of 65 without any particular post-career goal in mind. After several aimless weeks, he decided to drive his camper to visit family in Jackson Hole, Wyoming.

During the trip, he stopped at the Yellowstone Park Foundation, which raises funds for Yellowstone, America’s first national park. As it happened, the foundation was hiring people to educate park guests on wolves. Later, Kerr signed up for the position as an intern (实习生) .

Kerr stood out in the intern crowd — most of them were college and even high school students. But, in a sense, he had been prepared for this since his youth. His outdoor adventures with his grandfather had given him a love to nature, and as an adult, he had helped out at the local fire department on medical calls.

From his internship, he moved up to ranger, educating park visitors, ensuring safe encounters between guests and animals, and responding to medical emergencies He values his stewardship (管理工作) of what he describes as one of the most beautiful places on Earth, and appreciates the moments when he treats a visitor to an up-close look at one of the park’s wolves or bears through his telescope.

“These are rich and all-too-rare moments,” recalls Kerr. “I never forget them.”

1. Why did Kerr go to Wyoming?
A.To find a job.B.To visit family.
C.To join an internship.D.To become a volunteer.
2. What can we learn about Kerr according to Paragraph 4?
A.He suited the job quite well.B.He was born to love nature.
C.He put out the fire alone.D.He was the only adult intern.
3. What are the duties of Kerr as a park ranger?
A.Helping visitors and feeding animals.
B.Training interns and raising money.
C.Handling emergencies and ensuring safety.
D.Putting out fires and repairing telescopes.
4. What is Ker’s attitude towards his stewardship?
A.Worried.B.Ashamed.C.Positive.D.Regretful.

6 . Marei S.B., 25, got her first taste of her dream career this past summer in Colorado, where she interned (实习) at Woodward, Inc., an American designer, manufacturer, and service provider of control system components for aircraft engines for some of the world’s largest aircraft companies. Marei was part of the platform development engineering team at Woodward, helping train the operations and engineering teams on crucial aircraft components.

“This was my very first internship, and I was amazed by the aerospace industry,” she said. “We were always crunched under deadlines, and customers, understandably, requested large work orders. There was always a pressure to perform your best and provide them with the best possible units made at our plant. This taught me a lot about how demanding and fast-paced the industry is, but it also confirmed and reassured me that I really want to work in the aerospace industry.”

The internship required Marei to use both her technical engineering and interpersonal skills. She worked with both the engineering and operations teams at Woodward. “The operations team didn’t necessarily have engineering degrees, so I had to break down technical terms into everyday words that we use,” she said. “It taught me to be specific and precise. Even if I have to repeat things three or four times, that’s totally fine. I’d rather be more repetitive and ensure each step is correct than have to rework the entire process.”

Marei also helped train the teams through product displays and visual work instructions on how to manufacture specific products. That brought its own unique thrill, as the instructions she created could be used long after her internship ended.

Marei is planning to return to Woodward this winter. She’ll have another semester’s worth of engineering knowledge, which will further her into the career she’s always wanted. “I got to apply many of the things I learned at Harvard,” she said. “The internship taught me the technical knowledge I’d need to learn from my courses that could be applied here.”

1. Who is Marei?
A.An American manufacturer.B.A graduate from Woodward.
C.A long-time worker of Woodward, Inc..D.An advanced student gaining practical experience.
2. What does the underlined word “crunched” in Paragraph 2 probably mean?
A.Extremely busy.B.Desperately frustrated.
C.Really satisfied.D.Especially random.
3. Which words can best describe Marei’s work in Woodward, Inc.?
A.Boring but rewarding.B.Motivating and smooth.
C.Demanding but beneficial.D.Challenging and comfortable.
4. Why will Marei return to Woodward?
A.To hunt for further study in high college.B.To realize the potential in teaching.
C.To better put the knowledge into practice.D.To fulfill the initial dream at the young age.

9 . Many often find themselves considering jobs below their skill level in worsening employment markets. But it turns out that working in a job below your skill level harms your later chances of getting hired for a better-paying job more appropriate to your qualifications.

Sociologist David Pedulla at the University of Texas conducted a study to examine how jobs below a person’s skill level affect future employability. He tailored 2,420 applications and submitted them to 1,210 job listings posted in five major cities across the U.S. He varied the applications by gender, and also by employment status for the previous year. Then he used computer models to analyze and compare the results. The results show that applicants who were positioned as working below their skill level, regardless of gender had the lowest chances of getting called for a job interview.

These results should serve as a warning to anyone considering taking a job below their skill level. While it might pay the bills in the short term, it can significantly hammer one’s ability to return to the relevant skill level and pay grade at a later date.

Why might this be the case? Pedulla conducted a follow-up study with 903 employers. He asked them about their ideas of applicants with each kind of employment history, and how likely they would be to recommend each kind of candidate to an interview. The results show that employers believe that men who are employed in positions below their skill level are less committed and less competent than men in other employment situations. Those surveyed also believed that women working below their skill level were less competent than others, but did not believe them to be less committed.

The results of studies suggest that work below skill level signals to employers men’s incompetence and a lack of commitment. This is a disturbing reminder that the sword of gender bias (偏见) does in fact cut both ways.

1. Why do many people choose jobs below their skill level?
A.They fear bearing duties.B.They lack-self-confidence.
C.They face a tough economy.D.They pursue better-paying jobs.
2. How do the researchers carry out the first study?
A.By conducting interviews.B.By researching examples.
C.By making comparisons.D.By doing surveys.
3. Which of the following can best replace the underlined word “hammer” in Paragraph 3?
A.Ensure.B.Weaken.C.Test.D.Exercise.
4. What is the employers’ idea according to the follow-up study?
A.Men are more likely to get promoted.
B.Women are more devoted and capable.
C.Women behave better in jobs below skill level.
D.Men show talents in work of the relevant level.
