2 . Today’s workers are suffering from a burnout. The danger of this is that burnout is linked to under performance and feelings of hopelessness. Would you know how to fight burnout?     1

Find out the cause.

2     Think back a little and find out when these feelings developed. The added workload can cause early work days and late work nights, which could leave you tired.

To fight burnout, you may have to get rid of anything that weighs you down. Remember, the less you have on your plate, the better you may feel.

Separate work from home life.

When you stop working at the end of the day, leave your “office hat” in the office. And while we’re talking about balance and relaxation, make sure you schedule real days off from work. No work emails, no work text messages, and no wok phone calls—a day devoted entirely to you, your family and rest.

Set realistic goals.

Maybe you have short-term and long-term goals for your life. Goals are an excellent motivator.     3     You may feel that accepting every additional assignment at work will help you achieve your goal faster. However, there is only one of you and if you don’t pace yourself, you may crash before reaching the finishing line.

    4

The best solution to burnout is seeking out rich interpersonal communications, and continual personal and professional development. Find coaches and mentors who can help you identify positive relationships and learning opportunities.

Take short breaks during the day.

When you’re working throughout the day, schedule short 10-minute breaks every hour or every hour and a half.     5     Ten minutes may not seem like a lot, but this refresher could be the thing that keep you sane.

A.Seek out social connections.
B.Social support can be beneficial.
C.Maybe the problem is not your job itself, but rather a specific task or project.
D.But If you reach too high too fast, burnout is unavoidable.
E.Close your eyes for a few minutes, leave your computer, grab something drink, or simply sit in your quiet office and clear your mind.
F.Here are some methods you can follow to solve the problem.
G.If you are overwhelmed with work, you probably don’t have a lot of time to sleep

文章大意:本文是记叙文。文章讲述了作者从插画专业毕业后,自主择业选择当保姆,同时兼职做插画。朋友的婚礼使作者重拾专业,创办了自己的商店。

3 . A couple of years ago I graduated from art school. After graduation I was unsure of what to do with my degree. I had majored in illustration (插画专业) and loved it, but didn’t really feel interested in doing illustrations for any companies. This left me with few options other than freelance (自由职业的) jobs and taking care of kids for others.

I spent two years working as a baby-sitter, doing freelance illustrations on the side. It just wasn’t quite enough to pay rent, but I loved it, so I worked well over 50 hours a week, trying to keep up with both.

Just under a year ago I went to a friend’s wedding. I couldn’t think of a gift for them and really didn’t have a lot of money to spare, so I used my talents to create a portrait (肖像) for them. It wasn’t much, but I hoped it would be a good gift. When I handed the portrait to them and they unwrapped it, the looks on their faces were something I did not expect. There were joyful tears in their eyes as they cried, “That’s us! This is so beautiful!”

It’s funny because when I was in art school portraits were always my least favourite assignment. I hated drawing people and was always so much more interested in drawing little furry creatures. Once I saw the looks on my friends’ faces after giving them their portrait, it was all over. I suddenly loved portraits and wanted to do more.

I now take portraits to every wedding I go to and have given them as gifts to the families I baby-sit for. Every time the reaction makes all of the hard work and time I put into them so worth it. I’ve just started offering couple, family and pet portraits as an item on my Etsy shop.
1. What did the author choose to do after graduation?
A.She worked for a long-term employer.
B.She married and looked after her baby.
C.She pursued further studies in her major.
D.She worked as an illustrator as a side job.
2. Why did the author decide to draw a portrait for her friends as a wedding present?
A.She was eager to show off her talent.
B.She couldn’t afford an expensive gift.
C.Her friends didn’t take wedding photos.
D.She wanted to satisfy her friends’ request.
3. How did the friends feel when they received their portrait?
A.Embarrassed.B.Motivated.C.Overjoyed.D.Depressed.
4. What can be known about the author from the last paragraph?
A.She earned more money to support her talent.
B.She has begun to create her career as an illustrator.
C.She turned to illustrations for pets other than humans.
D.She no longer needs to go to the families she baby-sat for.

4 . Being Positive Is A Choice

As we all know, no job is always ideal and we often face obstacles that can impact our mood at work.     1     but I think that being a positive person is a choice we can make.

However, sitting back and waiting for positive change to happen will only lead to greater disappointment. You have to start somewhere when looking for a potential new opportunity. Where do you stand with these four critical steps?

When was your resume (简历) last updated?

I have heard, “Oh, I know I need to do that soon”, more times than I care to say. No one enjoys this task,     2    . It’s an annual commitment you need to make for yourself.

Are you networking?

We may all shrink at this since we think of having to meet with 20 strangers.     3    . And talk about business, careers, or whatever. I can’t stress enough how important networking is.

Are you current with new skills and technology?

The world is changing so fast and you have to stay up to speed with keeping your skills and new technology fresh. Take a class, read a book, and take a new course etc. These investments pay back with enormous profit.

    4    ?

Is your negativity at work now crossing into your personal life? Have you reviewed your hours doing business compared with personal time? This is so important and needs to be evaluated and discussed with your partner or friends on a regular basis. If you find that the negatives of work or personal life becoming too much, seeking professional assistance is a wise decision.     5    . As these professionals are trained to assist those whose negative issues are hurdles too high to cross.

A.Focus on one person at a time
B.but you always need to keep it fresh
C.Have you discussed with your family
D.We can’t be expected to be positive all of the time
E.There is nothing wrong with asking for that help
F.Have you truly evaluated your work-life balance
G.but you have accomplished more important things

5 . Marei S.B., 25, got her first taste of her dream career this past summer in Colorado, where she interned (实习) at Woodward, Inc., an American designer, manufacturer, and service provider of control system components for aircraft engines for some of the world’s largest aircraft companies. Marei was part of the platform development engineering team at Woodward, helping train the operations and engineering teams on crucial aircraft components.

“This was my very first internship, and I was amazed by the aerospace industry,” she said. “We were always crunched under deadlines, and customers, understandably, requested large work orders. There was always a pressure to perform your best and provide them with the best possible units made at our plant. This taught me a lot about how demanding and fast-paced the industry is, but it also confirmed and reassured me that I really want to work in the aerospace industry.”

The internship required Marei to use both her technical engineering and interpersonal skills. She worked with both the engineering and operations teams at Woodward. “The operations team didn’t necessarily have engineering degrees, so I had to break down technical terms into everyday words that we use,” she said. “It taught me to be specific and precise. Even if I have to repeat things three or four times, that’s totally fine. I’d rather be more repetitive and ensure each step is correct than have to rework the entire process.”

Marei also helped train the teams through product displays and visual work instructions on how to manufacture specific products. That brought its own unique thrill, as the instructions she created could be used long after her internship ended.

Marei is planning to return to Woodward this winter. She’ll have another semester’s worth of engineering knowledge, which will further her into the career she’s always wanted. “I got to apply many of the things I learned at Harvard,” she said. “The internship taught me the technical knowledge I’d need to learn from my courses that could be applied here.”

1. Who is Marei?
A.An American manufacturer.B.A graduate from Woodward.
C.A long-time worker of Woodward, Inc..D.An advanced student gaining practical experience.
2. What does the underlined word “crunched” in Paragraph 2 probably mean?
A.Extremely busy.B.Desperately frustrated.
C.Really satisfied.D.Especially random.
3. Which words can best describe Marei’s work in Woodward, Inc.?
A.Boring but rewarding.B.Motivating and smooth.
C.Demanding but beneficial.D.Challenging and comfortable.
4. Why will Marei return to Woodward?
A.To hunt for further study in high college.B.To realize the potential in teaching.
C.To better put the knowledge into practice.D.To fulfill the initial dream at the young age.

文章大意:这是一篇说明文,文章主要介绍跑步比赛中的配速员。

6 . A pacer is someone who runs in races or marathons to help set the pace for runners. There are different types of pacers. A race pacer usually carries a sign highlighting a specific competition time for a race. He helps runners reach their goals without relying on technology, such as a smart watch or GPS. Professional pacers are used in long-distance races. They run at different sections of the race to inspire runners. A record pacer helps a professional runner set a new record, who often leads the race for a predetermined distance at a predetermined pace.

A runner being paced runs directly following a pacer. Having a pacer can be helpful for a long-distance runner because researches show that it takes more energy to lead in a race all through the race than to follow another runner. The pacer takes on the responsibility of timing and establishing the pace so the runner only has to focus on his own running. Having a pacer as a guide in a long race can take some of the stress and pressure off by keeping an even pace. The pacer may also provide encouragement along the way to work towards the goal.

There are times, though, when running with a pacer can be more stressful than beneficial for a runner — especially for amateur runners. Not having taken professional training, you set a goal to run a particular pace, but then you realize this may not be the best speed for you. In some cases, the pacer is running too quickly for what you can stand. Other times, you could misjudge your abilities and run a slower pace than what your body can bear.

It is important to note that you don’t have to stay with a pacer just because you started with him. If you feel strong at the end and want to finish faster, you can run ahead. Or if he is too fast, you could slow down and maybe even join the slower pace group behind you.

1. What does a record pacer do?
A.He provides technical support.
B.He helps a runner keep the record.
C.He offers medical help to a runner.
D.He leads a professional runner at a speed set beforehand.
2. What does the underlined word “amateur” in Paragraph 3 probably mean?
A.Injured.B.Legendary.C.Unprofessional.D.Graceful.
3. What advice does the author give us in the last paragraph?
A.Changing pacers from time to time.
B.Following the pacer strictly all through the race.
C.Giving up something and preparing for a breakthrough.
D.Listening to your body and doing what feels right for you.
4. In which section of a website can the text be found?
A.Sport and fitness.B.Science and technology.
C.History and culture.D.Health and lifestyle.

文章大意:本文是一篇说明文,主要介绍了最近的一项调查研究—孩子们更愿意成为网红,而不是宇航员这一现象以及所谓的网红工作的阴暗面。

7 . A recent survey found children would rather be online influencers than astronauts. It made headlines and led to plenty of complaints about “kids these days”. Is influencing a promising career path? The lifestyles we see advertised on social media are enticing, but under the shining appearance lie uncertain income, pay inequality, disability and mental health issues.

Successful influencers will be the first to claim that anyone can make it in the industry. However, social media economy experts uncovered a huge income gap between successful influencers and everyone else. For most people trying to become an influencer, their passion projects of content creation often become free work for brands.

Most influencers are self-employed, often experiencing inconsistent income and a lack of protection that comes with long-term employment. The risks of self-employment are increased in the influencer industry by an absence of industry standards and little pay transparency(透明度). Influencers are often forced to assess their own value and determine fees for their work. As a result, content creators often undervalue their own creative labour, and many end up working for free.

Influencers are also often at the mercy of algorithms (运算法则) — the behind-the-scenes computer programs that determine which posts are shown, in which order, to users. Platforms share little detail about their algorithms, yet they finally determine who and what gains visibility and influence on social media, the threat of invisibility is a constant source of insecurity for influencers, who are under constant pressure to feed platforms with content. If they don’t, they may be “punished” by the algorithm-having posts hidden or displayed lower down on search results.

Constant online presence leads to one of the most common issues in the influencer industry: mental health concerns. Influencers can connect to their platform workspaces and audience at any time of day or night, which can lead to them overworking. Coupled with the fear of online criticism, it contributes to mental and physical health issues.

Although becoming an influencer may look appealing to more and more people, the industry’s dark underside needs to be made visible and improved through enhanced employment regulation and industry-led cultural change.

1. What does the underlined word “enticing” in paragraph 1 mean?
A.ImaginativeB.SimilarC.TraditionalD.Attractive
2. What might lead to many influencers undervaluing their creative work?
A.Their belief in winning through quantity.
B.Money paid by the industry is often hidden.
C.Their eagerness to make their work visible online.
D.There’re few employment opportunities in the industry.
3. Why do the influencers feel stressed according to paragraph 4?
A.They are often punished by platforms.
B.They have little knowledge of platform algorithm.
C.They find it difficult to create new content constantly.
D.They have to work out the order of posts to be displayed.
4. What is the author’s purpose in writing this text?
A.To describe the life of self-employed content creators.
B.To stress the importance of visibility in the online world.
C.To reveal relationships between platforms and influencers.
D.To show the dark side of working as an online content creator.

文章大意:本文是一篇记叙文。文章介绍了一家名为Elm Professional Services的公司聘请两名高中生帮助公司的社交媒体营销工作,并获得了良好的效果。

8 . Elm Professional Services owner Mia Van Tubbergh had plenty of business smarts—but no social media know how. So she turned to the younger generation and took on the two high school students who knew their stuff.

“Social media is foreign to many older professionals—but very important for connecting with today’s customers,” Ms Van Tubbergh said. “We have this workforce sitting in schools doing this already but they’re doing it for fun.” Ms Van Tubbergh’s company, which helps launch products to market, took then Year 10 students Braith Mansfield and Tahmana Rudolph on for two weeks’ work experience.

Ms Van Tubbergh said with a bit of guidance and help with spelling and presenting in a professional environment, the boys now do about 80% of Elm’s social media marketing work for online customers. The pair work one day a week with Elm at Gosford and the rest at Kariong High School. Their duties include stand-alone posts on social media platforms, videos, stories and website headers. Working at Elm has provided them with a ‘digital platform of work that is worth its weight in gold’—a valuable resource they can show other employers when starting a full-time career.”

Braith and Rudolph are among 42 NSW Central Coast students doing Year 11 and 12 as part of a School-Based Apprenticeship and Training(SBAT)program. 文章大意:本文是一篇记叙文。文章主要讲述了作者离开马戏团后的人生经历,以及作者如何将马戏团的经验应用于广播行业,并成为新闻记者,但马戏还是萦绕在作者心头。

9 . I was 6 years old when my father told me we were leaving the Big Apple Circus (马戏团). Until that point, I had spent most of my life on the circus lot, playing with the other circus kids. The circus, by its nature, is one that has a loose structure. So the early years after my leaving the circus to sit in a classroom all day felt more like a prison.

But years later, I found areas that interested me. I took the skills I had learned from being onstage and applied them to broadcasting. And so when Boston’s news station WBUR offered me a job out of college, I jumped at the chance. Along the way, I found I really enjoyed the work. I became WBUR’s news reporter. The flexibility and adaptability I’d learned in the circus as a child helped me do my job naturally and easily in a stressful situation — whether it was a destructive tornado outside Boston, or the Boston Marathon bombings of 2013.

But then a serious infectious disease appeared. Suddenly, for the first time in my adult life, I went for a year without doing any shows. But it became clear to me that performing was what I truly wanted. For me, the circus symbolizes who I am. And stages have always been where I’ve felt the most free. Some people get nervous before they go onstage, but by assuming (扮演) the character of Jacques ze Whipper and drawing a stupid moustache on my face, all my social anxiety disappears.

Circus performances go beyond age, socioeconomic status (地位), and even language. It’s the type of performance where you can go anywhere in the world to entertain anyone — help anyone forget their troubles for 5, 10, and even 30 minutes. And most importantly, for me, it means coming home.

1. How did the author feel in the early years of school?
A.Curious.B.Unfree.C.Loose.D.Impatient.
2. What do we know about the author’s job at WBUR?
A.He did it for his father.B.He did it against his will.
C.He risked his neck doing it.D.He took to it like a duck to water.
3. What does the circus probably mean to the author?
A.A means of living.B.A chance to go anywhere.
C.A part of his identity.D.A way to forget his troubles.
4. Why does the author write the text?
A.To express his love for circus performances.
B.To stress the value of performing.
C.To share his personal experiences in a circus.
D.To discuss the problem of choosing a job.

文章大意:本文是一篇记叙文。大海总是让作者感到惊奇。海港的美丽景色让作者把自己装扮成美人鱼。她在海滩出现的意义是给她的家乡增添了乐趣。

10 . The sea has always amazed me. When I was a child, people called me a mermaid because I spend too much time underwater.

After growing up I went to London with one of my friends. I found a job but unluckily the relationship between us soon fell apart. I lived alone and couldn’t eat and had bad dreams because of the huge stress I suffered from. Finally I decided to return to my hometown--Cornwall.

One evening while walking near the harbour, I saw the most beautiful sunset. I imagined how magical it would be if a mermaid swam in the sea on an evening like this. Then I thought I could be that mermaid.

I did my first public swim as a mermaid three weeks later. I jumped into the water in the tail I bought and swam around the harbour. Soon some people noticed me in amazement. At first I thought that whenever I had time I would jump into the sea and surprise people. But now my appearances have developed into planned events.

I’ve found a secret cove (海湾) where I change into my tail and swim out to the sea. Rocks shelter me from view before I appear, so it seems like I have swum from the middle of the sea. I tell people officially online where and when I will apear so people can come and take photos. After my appearances, I swam back to my cove, where I change out of my tail.

Although I give business shows sometimes, my beach appearances are without payment. It’s a way of giving something pleasurable to my hometown that helped me recover. Besides, I have realized how much I need to be in and near the sea. It’s part of who I am.

1. What gave the author the idea to dress up as a mermaid?
A.Her job requirement.B.Her love for swimming.
C.The praise she received as a kid.D.The beautiful view of the harbour.
2. Why did the author leave London to return to Cornwell?

3. What does the author think is the meaning of her beach appearances?
A.Increasing her income.B.Bringing her good fame.
C.Adding fun to her hometown.D.Providing a means of living.
