3 . Do you know what Street Sense is? It's a newspaper in Washington D. C. about homeless people and problems that affect them. 5 . Companies employing workers all hope to keep the workplace safe. Job-related injuries are something that responsible employers avoid. They take the time and use company resources to make sure that the people who come to work each day are safe.

Not only does this make good sense from a moral standpoint, but it also makes good financial sense. If a worker is injured on the job, it costs the company in terms of lost man hours, increased insurance costs, workers' compensation premiums (赔偿金), and legal costs.

Productivity is lost when other workers have to stop doing their jobs to deal with the situation. Even after the injured worker has been sent home or taken to hospital, other employees may be unfocused or need to take time off from work in the result of the incident.

When a workplace is safe, workers feel more comfortable and confident when they are in that environment. Productivity gets a promotion, and profits follow suit. Absence also drops when employers take steps to carry out an effective safety program.

Investing in a good safety program brings with it other benefits too. When employees feel safe in the workplace and absence rates are kept down, they can focus on serving the company's customers properly. Many companies offer products or services that are similar to those that other companies carry or provide. Customers will decide which companies they want to deal with based on which one they feel provides the best customer service. Increased absence means longer wait times and customers are quite prepared to move on to another company they feel will be able to help them in a more timely manner if they are not getting the level of attention that they deserve.

Everyone in the workplace has a duty and a responsibility to do whatever they can to keep the working environment safe. Managers should deal with employee concerns about safety issues in an appropriate manner.

1. What bad effect does an incident have according to the text?
A.The company may close down.
B.Workers may be hard to concentrate.
C.The quality of products may decline.
D.Workers may refuse to work again.
2. What do we know about the safe workplace from paragraph 4?
A.It can inspire workers' creativity.
B.It can bring workers a higher pay.
C.It can put an end to workers, absence.
D.It can bring the employer more money.
3. On what condition will the customers move on to another company according to the text?
A.If they can't get a safer product.
B.If they have to wait for a long time to get deserved attention.
C.If they feel the company can't provide a safer workplace for them.
D.If they find the company provides the same products as others offer.

7 . When I arrived in London, I couldn't speak a word of English. Not even "hello". I was 18. I'd been working for my dad's restaurant in Milan and I wanted a new experience. My friend from home lived in London and he used to tell me how incredible it was. I was really bored, so I took my luggage and left.

I was so lost when I arrived at Stansted. To me, English sounded like Chinese. I only arrived with a few hundred pounds. I lived with my friend in East London for a while. I couldn't find a job for a month. Finally I found a waiter role in a restaurant. At the time, I had nothing else going on in my life. I used to get up, go to work, and sleep. It was no difference every day. Then one day on my lunch break, I saw a Gymbox. When I took a look in, there was an amazing Muay Thai (泰拳) class. I used to do boxing when I was 15 but I wasn't that serious about it. There and then I joined the gym and signed up for the Thai boxing team.

I fell in love with it. I never missed a session (一场) . I started training a lot and the head coach said to me one day, "Do you want to fight?" I knew that's what I wanted to do. He put me in competitions and I won my first nine amateur games. After watching me progress, he offered to help me fight professionally. However, at one point I had a motorcycle crash and was out for 18 months. This year I've fought in Milan and London. I'd say I'm about 12 fights away from becoming a winner

Sometimes I can't believe how far I've come from that day I arrived in England. I think everything that's happened has been because I'm committed. But anyone could do it. If you put in 100%, you'll get there. I'm just happy because I did a positive thing with my life. It feels good.

8 . A college student in Alabama walked 32 kilometers in the dark to get to his new job. The story begins with Walter Carr's car breaking down the night before starting a new job at Bellhops, a furniture moving company.

Carr was unable to find a ride. So, he figured out how long it would take to walk from his house to the job in Pelham—32 kilometers away. He left at midnight so that he could make it   to the customer's house by 8:00 am the next morning.

Pelham police saw him walking along a highway at 4:00 am. So, they stopped to see if he needed help. After hearing his story, they took him to a restaurant for breakfast and then to a church where he could safely wait until 8:00 am.

The police then took Carr to the home of customer Jenny Lamey. Lamey said that even though Carr had just walked the entire night, he refused her offer to rest. He just wanted to start working. While he worked, he talked with the customer, telling her how much he liked her kitchen.

Reporter Carol Robinson of the Birmingham News wrote that Carr also shared another story with his customer. 9 . At 5:30 am, carer(护工)Ivy Bowen's clock wakes her up. She puts on her uniform, and then walks to a bus stop to the hospital where she works. Two hours and two buses later, the 68-year-old arrives at 8:00 am, half an hour before her shift(轮班).

For Tracey Griffiths and her son Carl, this half an hour has been life-changing. Because for nearly two years, Ivy has spent that time bringing Carl cups of tea and chatting. Thanks to these chats, as well as Ivy's devotion and caring skills, Carl has begun speaking again after four years of silence.

Four years ago, a serious accident left Carl unable to move and talk. When he did finally speak, one of his first words, unsurprisingly, was "Ivy". "Ivy is there and it makes a huge difference. Thanks to her, Carl's speech is coming on by leaps and bounds," says Tracey.

Ivy should have retired(退休)two years ago but she is still there, because she wants to be, and so do the hospital's managers and her grateful patients. Ivy is now in charge of 25 patients at the hospital. She makes tea and coffee for families as well as patients, and makes sure that everyone in her care gets enough fresh water. She also helps with feeding, giving creams or anything else that might need doing.

Ivy's great wish to improve the lives of patients has driven her to find other ways, in which she can help them out. For Ivy, the recipe for good care is simple. "Treat everyone as you would like to be treated yourself," she says. "I love everything about working at the hospital. To be able to come in, have a chat and change someone's day a bit, it means a lot."

1. When should Ivy Bowen begin her work every morning?
A.At 5:30.B.At 7:30.
C.At 8:00.D.At8:30.
2. What's Ivy's main duty in the hospital?

C.To feed all the patients.D.To provide water for the patients.
3. Who was Carl?
A.Ivy's son.B.Ivy's patient.

A.Carl has great difficulty in keeping silent.
B.Carl makes a huge difference to Ivy's career.
C.Carl is too afraid to see the carers as well as doctors.
D.Carl has made progress in speaking with the help of Ivy.

10 . Half of all work tasks will be handled by machines by 2025 in a shift likely to worsen inequality, a World Economic Forum report has forecast.

The think tank said a "robot revolution" would create 97 million jobs worldwide but destroy almost as many, leaving some communities at risk. Routine or manual jobs in administration and data processing were most at threat of automation, WEF said. But it said there would be a need for new jobs in care, big data and the green economy.

The WEF surveyed 300 of the world's biggest companies, with more than 8 million employees globally. More than 50% of employers surveyed said they expected to speed up the automation of some roles in their companies, while 43% felt they were likely to cut jobs due to technology.

WEF said the pandemic (疫情) had sped up the adoption of new technologies as firms looked to cut costs and adopt new ways of working. But it warned workers now faced a double threat from "accelerating automation and the economic impact from the Covid-19".

"These things have deepened existing inequalities across labor markets and removed gains in employment made since the global financial crisis in 2007-2008," said Saadia Zahidi, managing director at WEF. "The window of opportunity for active management of this change is closing fast."

WEF said currently around a third of all work tasks were handled by machines, with humans doing the rest, but by 2025 the balance would shift. Roles that relied on human skills such as advising, decision-making, reasoning, communicating and interacting would rise in demand. There would also be a sudden large increase in demand for workers to fill green economy jobs, and new roles in areas like engineering and cloud computing.

But it said millions of routine or manual jobs would be displaced by technology, affecting the lowest paid, lowest skilled workers the most. It said millions would need to be re-skilled to cope with the change, while governments would have to provide "stronger safety nets" for displaced workers.

1. Who are included in “some communities” mentioned in Paragraph 2?
A.Unskilled workers.B.Software engineers.
C.Career consultants.D.Organic fanners.
2. What is the purpose of paragraphs 3 and 4?
A.To analyse the reliability of the figures and facts.
B.To provide supporting evidence for the main idea.
C.To introduce two events for discussion.
D.To highlight two causes of the effects.
3. What do the displaced people expect their governments to do?
A.Slow down the automation.
B.Strengthen social security.
C.Improve network safety.
D.Promote the Robot Revolution.
4. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A.Further inequalities from the Robot Revolution.
B.A double threat from automation and pandemic.
C.Half of all work tasks to be lost.
D.Half of all work tasks to be automated.
