文章大意:这是一篇应用文。文章主要介绍了四种可以在环游世界时赚钱的工作。

1 . If you dream about working and meanwhile travelling in different countries, we’ve made a list of jobs that allow you to tour around the globe while earning some money!

A Travel Nurse

If you’re in the medical field, becoming a travel nurse is a good option. A travel nurse in worldwide demand is well paid, so medical professionals can wear uniforms on any continent. The nursing assignments vary in the length of working time. You can enjoy accommodation payment and insurance benefits, but you have to work in the high-stress environment.

A Waiter

A waiter abroad is a popular choice for young travelers because some restaurants don’t require much precious experience or qualifications, but they do not have access to high health insurance. Many people do service work for a while to earn enough money to travel abroad for the rest of the year. It’s OK for those without family to deal with customers at night, but they can’t get high wages.

An English Teacher

English is one of the world’s most spoken languages, so there is always a demand for people who can teach it. Being an English teacher abroad often requires a TEFL (Teaching English as a Foreign Language) certification. There are some popular destinations for prospective teachers. However, as teachers abroad, especially part-time teachers, their salaries are not high.

An Oil Industry Worker

Oil industry is one of the highest paying fields for both skilled and unskilled workers, with plenty of opportunities to travel whether they fulfill a position in exploration or production. You can be a researcher or an engineer on deep sea drilling rigs (钻塔). The job is well paid, and you can help companies do less harm to the sea.

1. What should travel nurses do?
A.Assign nursing tasks.B.Get a TEFL certification.
C.Pay for their own accommodation.D.Develop a good anti-pressure ability.

文章大意:这是一篇说明文。文章主要说明了摄影行业正在蓬勃发展,介绍了不同类型的摄影师以及这个行业仍然存在的问题。

2 . Most people have probably run into this problem. When you’re traveling, you want to take a photo to capture a moment, but you’re alone or your friend is a poor photographer. Now with the help of social media platforms, a “travel-along photographer” can take this worry off your list.

A travel-along photographer is like a travel companion who takes photos for you for an hour or two while accompanying you to the destination of your choice. Due to this year’s travel boom and social media, such photographers have grown in popularity.

“With social media platforms, every photographer can advertise for themselves and be seen,” said Shi Xinqi, a 22-year-old part-time photographer from Xiamen, Fujian province. In the past month, Shi has photographed over 30 clients. Rui Changchang, 27, agrees. Social media platforms help him be seen and find what he has been looking for over the years.

Rui used to be a fashion photographer for celebrities, but he didn’t feel the fundamental joy that he thought photography should create. From the lighting and clothing to the professional models, everything was from an assembly line. Now, he’s a full-time photographer who spends most of his time at Universal Studios in Beijing. “It’s very fascinating to help complete strangers become comfortable in front of the camera and capture a joyful moment for them.” Rui believes that capturing connections between people is what makes photos so touching.

But this is not a one-way service. When photographers capture these moments for their customers, they also learn something about themselves. “Most of my customers are women. I often describe them as the ‘beauty and power of women’,” said Shi, relating one experience with a customer in her 30s. Shi asked her if she had any regrets in her life—to which she replied that she had none. “That woman was so confident and determined. She helped relieve my anxiety about aging.” said Shi.

However, this booming industry also has a dark side. For travel-along photographers, there are no industry standards or measures to ensure the rights of all parties. Even though the photographers are from the same city, their pricing is dramatically different.

1. What does a travel-along photographer mainly do?
A.Run social media platforms.B.Take worries off a traveler’s list.
C.Take pictures of a traveler along the way.D.Accompany a traveler to the destination.
2. How is paragraph 4 developed?
A.By drawing conclusions. B.By giving a definition.
C.By listing examples. D.By making a contrast.
3. What does paragraph 5 intend to tell us?
A.The services offered by the photographers.B.The benefits enjoyed by the photographers.
C.The moments captured by camera.D.The communication promoted by customers
4. What is the author’s attitude towards the industry?
A.Favorable. B.Objective. C.Indifferent. D.Negative.

文章大意:这是一篇议论文。主要讨论了人们对“什么时候机器才能做我的工作?”的不同观点。

3 . Many people think that the world is about to step into the fourth industrial revolution. This time, machines can do a lot of work in the charge of human beings, even better than human beings. In the future, the world can be more efficient, but unemployment (失业) will become more common.

It raises a troubling question for all of us-when will a machine be able to do my job? There are no certain answers, but some of the world’s top artificial intelligence (人工智能) researchers are trying to find out.

Katja Grace, a research associate at the University of Oxford’s Future of Humanity Institute, and her colleagues have surveyed 352 scientists and compiled (汇编) their answers into predictions about how long it may take for machines to outperform humans on various tasks.

The good news is that many of us will probably be safe in our jobs for some time to come. The researchers predict there is a 50% chance that machines will be capable of taking over all human jobs in 120 years.

“One of the biggest surprises was the overall lateness of the predictions,” says Grace. “I expected the amazing progress in machine learning in recent years, plus the fact that we were only talking to machine learning researchers, to make the estimates earlier."

“I am a bit skeptical of some of the timelines given for tasks that involve physical manipulation (操作),” says Jeremy Wyatt, professor of robotics and AI at the University of Birmingham. “It is one thing doing it in the lab, and quite another having a robot that can do a job reliably in the real world better than a human.”

Manipulating physical objects in the real world, an environment that changes randomly, is a complex job for a machine.

Perhaps the hardest jobs for machines to perform are those that take years of training for humans to excel at These often involve intuitive (凭直觉的) decision making and abstract thinking -things that computers have been struggling with.

The experts predict robots will not be taking over as surgeons (外科医生) until around 2053, while it could take 43 years before machines are competing with mathematicians for space in top academic journals.

1. According to the passage, how might the fourth industrial revolution impact the world?
A.The world will become more efficient.
B.Machines can do things better than humans.
C.Humans will not find jobs because of machines.
D.Machines can do things instead of human beings.
2. How did the researchers find out the answer?
A.By giving examplesB.By doing experiments
C.By conducting surveysD.By making comparisons
3. According to Jeremy Wyatt, what makes certain tasks challenging for machines in the real world?
A.The real word is full of challenges.
B.Manipulating physical objects is complex.
C.Machines can do better than humans in labs.
D.The randomly changed environment is too difficult for computers.
4. What does the underlined word “skeptical” mean in paragraph 67
A.confusedB.surprisedC.doubtfulD.certain

4 . As a child, Danielle Belleny’s love for nature led her to wildlife biology. Growing up, Danielle Belleny was always outdoors, picking up insects and investigating the animal world on her own. She hadn’t yet heard of wildlife biology, but that’s what she was learning about. She wanted to be a vet, a person who can treat sick or injured animals, at first. She said, “I always knew I wanted to work with animals, and as a kid, that was the only job I knew where I could do that.” But when Belleny was in college, her dad advised her to learn wildlife biology instead of veterinary(兽医学).

Later, Belleny started working on research projects. One project involved placing trackers on a bird called the northern bobwhite. For another, she spent time feeding goats, as a way to protect a grass habitat for endangered box turtles without hurting them.

Belleny’s current job at Plateau Land and Wildlife Management lets her split her time between the indoors and outdoors. It also lets her work with people. “In the mornings, I’m usually out the door before sunrise,” she says. She observes birds, keeping track of different species. And she searches for signs of what other animals in the area are doing. Around lunchtime, she’ll return home and write up a report. In the afternoon, she leaves for another site visit. She advises people on how to protect the wildlife that lives on their farm. Her work takes her all around Texas.

Outside of work, young Belleny has been bird-watching for seven years. Her first book This Is a Book for People Who Love Birds was published in May, 2022. Now she’s working on a children’s book about birding, which is scheduled to come out in spring 2024. 文章大意:本文是一篇说明文。文章主要介绍的是关于“数字游民”这种新兴职业的情况,包括“数字游民”的含义和内容、一些真实的“数字游民”的感受、以及该职业出现的原因和其优点和缺点。

5 . The phrase “digital nomads (游民)” suggests joyful people who escape their daily work to travel the world, working with laptops on beaches. Relevant statistics regularly made the headline “There will be one billion digital nomads by 2035”.

I started researching digital nomads in 2015, and it took me three years to develop an understanding of what might be going on. I’ve met hundreds of people who think of themselves as digital nomads and many more who have dreamed about becoming one. The first thing I learned is that how people feel about the label “digital nomad” changes over time. People starting out often assume it’s a permanent lifestyle, but that’s rarely the case. One of my respondents explained, “I don’t go around calling myself a digital nomad now. It’s a bit silly.” Indeed, there’s still debate about whether it’s a buzzword (时髦用语) or a real phenomenon. Some have even tried to figure out how “authentic” a digital nomad is, by how much they move from place to place. And there has been heated debate online about who’s a real digital nomad, and who is merely self-promoting.

Most of the digital nomads I spoke to, who once had well-paid jobs, told me that they were escaping from deeply-rooted problems in the contemporary Western workplace. One of my respondents, Lisette, a skilled translator from Hamburg, Germany, is able to produce high-quality work quickly. She is soon tired of the culture of presenteeism (出勤主义) at her workplace. She explained, “I’m efficient and I like to get the work done and leave on time. Others were obviously scared to leave first, so they would sit at their desks and play with their computers.”

Nearly 40% of British adults believe their jobs don’t make sense. Their housing is of poor quality and too expensive, and the economies don’t provide young people with wages they can live on. With these challenges, it’s hardly surprising that those new to the world are already desperate to escape. Yet there are certain complexities that come with living as a citizen of the world. As Lisette said, “Digital nomads can quickly become isolated.” Digital nomads have to shoulder responsibility for almost every aspect of modern life: their mental health, daily routine, income, safety and shelter. Most digital nomads travel on tourist visas, which requires them to move regularly-an experience my participants have described as disorienting (使人迷失方向的).

Being a digital nomad can be rewarding and offers an escape from the boring office hour. But it’s important that digital nomads think deeply about the importance of community and mental health in their lives. Freedom does not mean the same thing for everyone.

1. What does the author think of digital nomads?
A.Easy to get on with.B.Extremely hard to be accepted.
C.Difficult to define.D.About to disappear.
2. What led Lisette to escape from her workplace?
A.Fierce competition.B.Inflexible working system.
C.Economic pressure.D.Violation of personal space.
3. What is an attractive aspect of being a digital nomad according to paragraph 4?
A.Travelling the world.B.Enjoying more free time.
C.Receiving steady incomes.D.Being free from real-life pressures.
4. What does the author advise us to do in the last paragraph?
A.Think twice before becoming a digital nomad.
B.Share your real life and job on the Internet.
C.Have a much more comfortable lifestyle.
D.Resign from a dead-end job as soon as possible.
5. What would be the best title of the passage?
A.Digital nomads: what future jobs will be like
B.Digital nomads: a trend that will take over the world
C.Digital nomads: an effective way to escape your everyday work
D.Digital nomads: what it’s really like to work while traveling the world

文章大意:本文是一篇说明文。文章主要介绍了什么是职业组合。

6 . When Jean-Philippe Michel, a career coach, works with secondary school students, he doesn’t use the word “profession”. Rather than encouraging his young clients to choose a profession, say, architect or engineer, he works backwards from the skills that each student wants to acquire.

Deciding the skills you want to use leads to a career that’s more targeted — and thus more likely to bring you satisfaction. “They need to shift from thinking about jobs and careers to thinking about challenges and problems,” Michel says.

“The purpose is to help teenagers plan for a “portfolio career”, which is made up of numerous micro-jobs and will be better received in the next decade, ”says Michel. “Instead of identifying your job role or description, you will be constantly adding skills based on what is going to make you more employable,” says Jeanne Meister.co-author of The Future Workplace Experience.

More traditional companies are offering various project opportunities to their own employees. Workers are encouraged to choose their next projects based on their skills, or skills they want to develop, which can mean working in different parts of the company. For companies, the payoff for experimenting with internal project-based opportunities means workers are less likely to jump from one company to the next. Micro-jobs can inspire a sense of belonging and autonomy within a company, which in turn might keep staff from job-hopping (跳槽) to the competition

“But when it comes to building a long-term career, there are disadvantages to creating a portfolio of work,” say experts. If you constantly hop from one project to the next, the change can be jarring and leave you without a clear path to success. “With fewer promotions and changes to job titles, it can be more difficult to feel like you’re succeeding even if you’re regularly completing projects,” says career coach Michel.

Of course, it can take companies years to change from traditional mentality to what boosts professional growth.

1. Why does Michel avoid using the word “profession” with his students?
A.To help them realize what they want to be.
B.To encourage them to choose a dream job.
C.To enable them to master survival skills.
D.To guide them to focus more on challenges
2. What is the advantage of portfolio career to employees?
A.It will make them more popular with colleagues.
B.It will equip them with more competitive skills.
C.It will discourage them from switching jobs.

D, It will help them enjoy a stable working state.

3. What does the underlined word “‘jarring” in paragraph 6 mean?
A.Unpleasant.B.Significant.C.Permanent.D.Unavoidable.
4. What’s the author’s attitude towards portfolio career?
A.Supportive.B.Objective.C.Doubtful.D.Intolerant.

文章大意:本文是一篇新闻报道。主要讲的是保罗·杜里茨是一位76岁的社会研究教师,9月1日,他创造了世界上最长的教学生涯的吉尼斯世界纪录。

9 . Paul Durietz is a 76-year-old social studies teacher from Illinois, the United States. On September 1, he set a Guinness World Record for the world’s longest teaching career. Mr. Durietz has been teaching for 53 years — since he was 23 years old.

When he was just 11, Mr. Durietz says, he made up his mind to be a social studies teacher. Social studies is the study of history, and how people, countries, and cultures are connected. He became interested in history after hearing stories from his father, who fought in World War II.

Mr. Durietz got his first teaching job at Woodland Middle School in Gurnee, Illinois in 1970. Ever since then, he’s been teaching social studies at the same school. He says he loves sharing his knowledge of history with students. “Teaching is never boring,” he says. “Every day is different.”

Things have changed a lot since Mr. Durietz first began teaching. When he started, he wrote on a blackboard with chalk, and the students used paper textbooks. These days, he and the students use computers and digital whiteboards. Despite this, Mr. Durietz says the students are still pretty much the same — except that now they have cell phones.

With or without technology, Mr. Durietz has used creative activities to help his students learn. For example, he has organized virtual field trips, geography contests, and special days about the US Civil War. He has even organized elections at school to help his students learn about politics.

Mr. Durietz wasn’t really trying to set a record. But his family, friends, and the people he works with encouraged him to apply to Guinness to see if he’d set a record. He had. Now he still has no plans to retire any time soon. “Keep working on what I love to do in life,” he says.
