The project won a prize at China Thinks Big, a competition     4     (hold) by Harvard and Tsinghua University to encourage teenagers to explore important     5     (globe) issues and focus on solutions.

To investigate students’ attitude     6     this group, he designed a questionnaire. “In one question, 56 percent of the students said they would greet those non-teaching workers,     7     only 17 percent strongly believe that every student should do so,” said Ding.

Billy was 15 years old then. He grew up in a very poor neighborhood. No one in his family had gone to college before. Actually, few people around him had received higher education. They all struggled to live a good life. Therefore, Billy knew nothing about colleges or scholarships and he never thought he would go to college one day. Although he was a smart boy, he didn’t study hard al school and often got into trouble with other teenagers in his neighborhood.

One day, while Billy was walking on the playground, a boy of his age started making fun of him. Then that boy pushed him hard and Billy fell onto the ground. Billy became so angry that he stood up and beat that boy. So a fight began.

It happened that Billy’s English teacher Mr. Smith was walking nearby. He immediately ran to the boys to stop the fight. Billy was a bit worried because he knew his teacher was very strict with students. He was afraid his teacher would punish him. However, to his astonishment, his teacher didn’t do that.

“Billy, let’s have a talk,” said his teacher.

Billy, not knowing what his teacher wanted to do, was very worried. But he nodded. So they went to a bench nearby and sat down. After they sat down, Mr. Smith began, “Billy, I know you’re a smart boy, but you’re wasting your life now. Why don’t you study hard to go to college so that you can change your life and have a bright future?”

Hearing that, Billy didn’t know what to say. He had never thought about it. Billy was in silence. Mr. Smith continued, “I know you may have never thought about going to college. But everything is possible. When I was at your age, I was a troublemaker just like you and never thought I’d be able to go to college, either. It was all because of the support and encouragement of Mr. Howard, my math teacher in high school.”

5 . 阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。

I looked out at the smiling faces packed into the school hall. Flashes from cameras lit up in all directions. The applause filled my cars. I had done it. I had really done it.

Just a few months earlier, I would never have pictured myself acting in, a play in front of two hundred people. But when the time came, I got up on stage and faced one of my greatest fears-and-proved I could do more than I ever gave myself credit for. I found a new person inside me, a much more daring, outgoing person who had been hidden all along, just waiting for the opportunity to appear.

If not for my teacher, Mrs. Sather, I might never have found that opportunity.

In the first and second grade, I was extremely shy. I had friends, but it just wasn't in my personality to be very outgoing, even when I knew someone well. I was afraid I would do or say something wrong, so usually I just smiled and listened to other people's conversations. I did well in school and I loved to write. However, I would escape into my writing, where I could be myself and never had to worry about what other people thought of me. In my stories, I was never shy.

My teacher, Mrs. Sather, always encouraged me to write more. She told our class to go after our dreams and dig in with both hands. I think she was one of the first people to see my inner strength. One day, she announced that our class was going to perform a play she had written." 'll begin to cast everyone tomorrow," she said." I need someone who is not afraid to be on stage in front of the public to play the lead part of Dorothy. Anybody want to try?" A few excited hands shot up—mice, of course, was not one of them—ad Mrs. Sather smiled." We'll talk more about it tomorrow," she said. Then the bell rang and my classmates slowly left the classroom.

10 . 阅读下面材料,在空白处填入适当的内容(1个单词)或括号内单词的正确形式。

My freshman football coach in high school was the greatest teacher I ever had.

We were practicing     1     (catch) the football. He threw me a pass and I dropped it. He started yelling at me. I went back in line embarrassed. My friend was up next. Coach threw     2     (he) the football. He dropped it, too. Coach said nothing.     3     (annoy), I murmured under my breath, “Why didn’t he get     4     (yell) at?” “What was that? TAKE OFF! TAKE OFF!!!’’ He didn’t say where to take off to, and I wasn’t going to ask. So, like Forest Gump, I just kept running until practice was over.

After practice he came and talked to me. “Stephen, the reason     5     I yelled at you but not     6     other guy is that I have more     7     (expect) out of you. If I yell at you, then it's because I expect more out of you and know you can get     8     (good). It’s when we stop yelling at you when you mess up that you should begin to worry. Because if that day comes, it means we     9     (give) up on you.”

WOW. That single sentence by a football coach taught me more about life in one sentence     10     any other teacher o class ever had.
