It was just another boring day for Jamie, a third-grader. He sat in his English class, mindlessly doodling on his notebook.

“Jamie Turner, please report to the principal’s office immediately.”

Jamie’s heart sank. With his mind racing, Jamie grabbed his backpack and made the long walk down the hallway to the principal’s office, avoiding eye contact with fellow students. As he walked, he searched his brain for any possible explanations for why he was being called.

Jamie finally reached the principal’s office. He took a deep breath and pushed it open, bracing himself for the worst.

To his surprise, he found the principal, Mr. Harrison who was wearing a giant yellow chicken hat on his head, standing on his desk and waving his arms as if he were trying to fly!

Jamie’s mouth fell open at the sight, too stunned to speak.

“Jamie, sit down,” Mr. Harrison exclaimed, gesturing him to take a seat. “I’ve called you here because we’ve been having some complaints about your behavior. You’ve been… too funny.”

Jamie’s jaw dropped further. Was that really the reason he was called to the principal’s office?

The principal continued, his tone serious, “Now, we take our education very seriously here, and while we appreciate a good sense of humor, we have to draw the line somewhere. We cannot have students disturbing the learning environment with their… their humor.”

Jamie couldn’t help it—he burst out laughing, doubling over in his seat as he gasped for breath.

Finally, Jamie managed to compose himself enough to speak. “I’m sorry, sir, it’s just… I can’t stop laughing at the thought of getting in trouble for laughing… and your hat! It’s ridiculous!”

The principal frowned, “Well, I’m glad you find it funny. But your teachers don’t.”

Jamie nodded seriously, trying to contain his laughter. “I understand, sir. I’ll be less funny in class.” “Um, Mr. Harrison, why are you wearing a chicken hat?” Jamie asked, unable to contain his curiosity.

“Oh, today is Animal Day for the first-graders.” Mr. Harrisjon grinned.

It was a sunny day. Anabia, an 11-year-old girl, was excited because today was the drawing contest at her school. Anabia was really good at drawing and usually got the highest marks in art. Her teachers would often ask her to make posters for school plays and call on her during free periods to help with cuttings, drawing, shading, colouring and much more. There was an art competition taking place in school and Anabia had worked really hard and wanted to win it. But there was one thing that was disturbing her today.

Recently, a new girl, Rida, had joined her class. She was also interested in art but she was not as good at drawing as Anabia was. Miss Saima, the art teacher, helped Rida and taught her tips and tricks to improve her drawing skill. And now Rida was also considered among the best artists in grade six.

Rida was quick, smart and intelligent. Anabia became jealous of Rida’s intelligence and felt that the new girl would be tough to beat.

So that day, for the art competition, Miss Saima took all the students to the art room, told them their roll numbers and gave important instructions. Anabia’s roll number was 16, while Rida was number 17. The bell rang, indicating the beginning of the contest. Miss Saima wrote on the board: make a scene of a sunset with a flowing river and a sailing boat.

Anabia knew that the best tools to make a sunset were oil pastels (油画棒). Anabia started to look for her oil pastels in her art bag. Then, after looking through the bag, she remembered that she had left them at home. Immediately, she got up to tell Miss Saima.

Miss Saima was disappointed at Anabia’s carelessness and told her that she could not help her, as it was her responsibility to come prepared for the contest that had been announced a week in advance. Anabia’s best friends were also there, but none of them offered to share anything, much to Anabia’s surprise and disappointment.

My stomach dropped as Mrs. Nelson said, “This is just a reminder that tomorrow is the Open Day!”

I hoped Mom to be free tomorrow so Dad would not have to come. What would people think of him? I put all negative thoughts aside with the determination that Mom would be able to come, and that was the end of it!

When arriving home, I walked in the kitchen and smelled fresh bread. It was one of Mom’s baking days! She greeted with her usual warmth, asking. “Well, hello there! How was your day?” “Nothing special. It was just another day,” I replied casually. Hearing this, her face showed her disappointment, but then here yes kept probing(探查) mine trying to read if I was being honest. It worked. She saw there was something on my mind. “Heidi, are you sure you have no news for me?” she continued.

I explained that tomorrow was the Open Day. And Dad was walking in the backdoor just in time to hear the news. I quickly asked Mom, “You are free, aren’t you?”

“Sorry dear, Ⅰ have made lots of arrangements for tomorrow. Maybe Dad will be willing to go.”

“Do you want me to come with you, Heidi?” Dad asked with a smile, “I would really love that!”

“Sure, Dad. That would be cool,” I said. But Dad really did not notice my lack of enthusiasm as his face brightened and he started talking about how much fun it was going to be.

I loved Dad’s optimism and enthusiasm. He had made life so exciting and adventurous for the family and I adored him for it. But would people see him the way I saw him? His thin body with practically bald(秃的) head was not exactly what my friends would consider a “cool dad”. Dad was also much older than most of my fiends’ parents. Their dads would be professional businessmen, doctors, dentists, or engineers. Dad was a draftsman(绘图员)and he worked in an office at home.

4 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

I am very delighted to enter my ideal school. For most freshmen, August is the month for military training, which serves as a good chance to get familiar with new classmates and adapt to campus life.

Our school’s training took place from Aug 23 to 29. One of the challenges was to make a blackboard presentation in the new classroom. When I found out that I was in charge of this project, I had butterflies in my stomach. After all, this was the first activity in our school life.

“Would other top students alienate (疏远) me? Could I manage to both complete this project and rehearse for the closing concert? What if my classmates wouldn’t follow instructions under my leadership? I was thinking of these tricky questions by myself.

The project began on Aug 24. The group of blackboard presentation was composed of four girls. The three other girls in the group were flexible. We gave up our lunch break hour and returned to the dormitory later at night so as to work longer on the project. One girl questioned my design, saying that we should abridge (删减) the text and leave more space for pictures. The disagreements between us upset me from time to time, but whenever there was a conflict, I tried to stay calm, decide whether to take her suggestions and then make adjustments accordingly. Gradually, I found her to be a person of strong opinion and organizational capabilities. Sometimes I was absent for a rehearsal, and I felt relieved to leave the project in her care. Other classmates turned out to be amazingly warm-hearted. Every day, five or six students came to ask me if they could help out with the decorations. Then came the big day.

5 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

Be a true runner

For me, it was normal to feel lost at the inter-camp track. Four camps of kids were ready to lead their teams to a blue ribbon and win the day. Not me. I was too little to be the leader and too skinny to be an athlete. I knew this by the time I was twelve, because my camp counselors(辅导员)and the other kids reminded me of it every chance they got. So when our camp needed a fourth runner in the two-mile race around the lake, I knew I was no one’s first choice.

I hid in the shade of a maple tree as they called the names of the runners, my body tensed as I heard a counselor call, “Fred! Where is Fred! He is in this race!” It was Barry. He spotted me under the tree. “Fred! We need a 12-year-old who hasn’t been in other events to run the two-mile!”

He gave me a push towards the starting line. Having no confidence and trying to save myself from the shame of taking the last place as four camps watched, I pleaded with him.

“But I don’t know the way around the lake!”

“You’re in. Just follow Bill!” Barry smiled.

Bill was my friend and the fastest runner in our camp. And then Barry said, “When you make it to the last stretch(最后一程)on the field, just throw your head back and run.”

At the starting line, I stood next to Bill and trembled.

“On your mark… Get set...” The gun cracked and sixteen of us took off. I stayed close on Bill’s heels, a little too close for Bill, I guess. He shouted at me, “Back off!”

I did. Two guys passed me, but I kept my eyes on Bill.

It was tiring. The distance was widening between Bill and me. We made the turn from the dusty road onto the muddy, wooded trail that would go around the lake back to the field. Through the trees, I saw Bill trip over a tree root and fall. A runner from another camp passed him.

6 . 阅读下面材料,根据所给情节和段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

Elsa loved school. However, there was one class Elsa worried about more than any other—art. She didn’t know why she just wasn’t any good at drawing, painting, or cutting.

Ms. Daniel, the art teacher, stood at the front of the room. “Class, next Friday our school is going to have an art competition,” she announced. Ms. Daniel was a great teacher, and Elsa liked her a lot. But this announcement made Elsa nervous. “Everyone in the school will create a piece of artwork to show in the library. You can use the different types of artwork we have been studying.” Ms. Daniel was quite excited when she spoke while Elsa found herself sinking lower in her chair.

Elsa had the whole weekend to work on her project, but she could not think of anything to do. On Monday, Elsa felt frightened, so after school Elsa asked Ms. Daniel if she could write an art paper instead of doing an art project.

“I understand this project scared you, Elsa,” Ms. Daniel said. “Just remember, you can create any kind of art you want.” Ms. Daniel smiled at her. “Art is a person’s way of expressing his or her feelings—it isn’t always painting, drawing, or cutting. I know you will think of something very creative, and I can’t wait to see it.”

When Elsa arrived home, she took out a piece of paper and a pencil. She remembered Ms. Daniel’s words. “Art is a person’s way of expressing his or her feelings.” Elsa wrote the word “terrified” on her paper. She crumpled(揉皱) the paper and threw it to the side of her desk.

Paragraph 1:

Then Elsa stared at the crumpled ball.

Paragraph 2:

On Friday, Elsa carefully carried her project, a snowman, into the library.
