A little boy and his grandmother came to see Santa at Mayfair Mall in Wisconsin. The child climbed up on Santa Claus's lap holding a picture of a little girl.
"Who is this?" asked Santa, smiling. "Your friend? Your sister?"
"Yes, Santa," he replied.
"My sister, Sarah, who is very sick," the boy said sadly.
Santa glanced over at the grandmother who was waiting nearby and saw her wiping her eyes with a tissue.
"She wanted to come with me to see you very much, Santa!" the child shouted.
"She misses you," he added softly.
Santa tried to cheer the boy up, asking him what he wanted Santa to bring him for Christmas.
When they finished their talk, the grandmother came over to help the child get off his lap, and started to say something to Santa, but halted (停顿).
"What is it?" Santa asked warmly.
"Well, I know it's really too much to ask you, Santa, but..." The girl in the photograph is my granddaughter. You see... she has leukemia(白血病)and isn't expected to make it even through the holidays," she said through tear-filled eyes.
"Is there any way, Santa, any possible way that you could come to see Sarah?
All she's asked for. for Christmas. is to see Santa.
Santa blinked. swallowed hard and told to the woman to leave information with his elves(小精灵)as to where Sarah was, saying he would see what he could do. Santa thought of nothing else for the rest of that afternoon. "What if it were MY child lying in that hospital bed, dying?" he thought with a sinking heart.

Holly was confused as she opened the birthday present from her best friend. Susan — it was a twelve-by-eight inch dark blue carpet. Her “thanks” was hardly heard as Holly tried hard not to show her disappointment.
The next morning. I carried a kitchen rubbish bag outside only to find Susan’s carpet lying there. I immediately reached in and pulled it out of the rubbish can. After giving it a brushing. I brought it into the house and put it away.
Before Holly’s birthday, Susan had been a regular visitor in our home. But suddenly I realized that it had been nearly three weeks since we’d heard the mention of Susan’s name. I missed her warm smile very much.
“Susan invited us to go to her house after school tomorrow. “Holly said as soon as she arrived from school. From her voice I sensed she was pleased with the invitation.
We were traveling along the winding country road that led to her house the following day. On the way Susan talked nervously about her foster mom and the seventeen cats they had taken in and cared for.
When we came to a stop, Susan’s foster mom — who introduced herself as Glenda — gave us a warm welcome. Susan guided us through the house. She proudly showed us her room, which was only decorated with some shabby used furniture.
I followed Susan’s foster mom, Glenda, into the kitchen. After clearing a small area, Glenda poured us each a cup of black coffee with her trembling hand. Then she began to relax as we drank our coffee and chatted about her cats.
Her eyes shone as she showed her fondness for Susan. But her expression turned blue when she referred to the girl’s past In an instant, I came to respect this warmhearted woman who had opened her home to a younger girl and tied hard to make a difference in her life.

Having emotional health isn’t difficult, but
5 . Three passions, simple but overwhelmingly strong, have governed my life: the longing for love, the search for knowledge, and unbearable pity for the suffering of mankind. These passions, like great winds, have blown me hither and thither, in a wayward course over a deep ocean of anguish, reaching to the very verge of despair.
I have sought love, first, because it brings ecstasy—ecstasy so great that I would often have sacrificed all the rest of my life for a few hours for this joy. I have sought it, next, because it relieves loneliness—that terrible loneliness in which one shivering consciousness looks over the rim of the world into the cold unfathomable lifeless abyss. I have sought it, finally, because in the union of love I have seen, in a mystic miniature, the prefiguring vision of the heaven that saints and poets have imagined. This is what I sought, and though it might seem too good for human life, this is what—at last—I have found.
With equal passion I have sought knowledge. I have wished to understand the hearts of men. I have wished to know why the stars shine. And I have tried to apprehend the Pythagorean (毕达哥拉斯) power by which number holds sway above the flux. A little of this, but not much, I have achieved.
Love and knowledge, so far as they were possible, led upward toward the heavens. But always pity brought me back to earth. Echoes of cries of pain reverberate in my heart. Children in famine, victims tortured by oppressors, helpless old people a hated burden to their sons, and the whole world of loneliness, poverty, and pain make a mockery (嘲弄) of what human life should be. I long to alleviate (减少) the evil, but I cannot, and I too suffer.
This has been my life. I have found it worth living, and would gladly live it again if the chance were offered me.

6 . Guilt is one of the most painful emotions that humans experience but also one of the most common. Nobody enjoys feeling guilty, but this emotion serves an important purpose: it alerts a person when he or she has done something wrong. This enables the person to make amends and work to heal relationships that were damaged by their actions.
Nevertheless, guilt can be destructive if it is not dealt with in the right way. It can cause people to avoid others because they are too embarrassed to apologize for their actions or inaction. Some try to avoid the pain of guilt by turning to other worse habits.
The proper response to guilt depends on what kind of guilt you're dealing with. For false guilt, it’s important to recognize that the guilt does not reflect an actual ethical failure.
For example, some false guilt focuses on failing to meet expectations you had for yourself.
Guilt is painful, but it can serve a good purpose if you use it well.

There are moments in life
8 . To think positively, you have to stop saying something to yourself that can make you become negative. Here are some examples:
※ I’m worthless.
You were born for a reason. Feed it in your mind, and this naturally makes you worthy. Actually, even something as tiny as an ant has an impact on keeping environmental balance.
※ I can never be like them.
※ I’m not good enough.
Says who? Not good enough for whom?
※ I’m a loser.
You’re a loser if you say so. Stop hurting yourself.
※
No matter what you do, people always have something to talk about you when you leave the room. So, why care? Don’t give them the chance to destroy your dreams. For once, do what your heart wishes for, and you’ll feel free.
A.I can’t believe what happened. |
B.Be grateful for the little things in life. |
C.So you have no need to doubt yourself. |
D.What they think and say about me matters. |
E.Saying such things to yourself will just put you down. |

9 . The driver who cuts you off in traffic. The neighbors who don't pick up after their dog.Situations such as these get our hearts racing and send our stress levels skyrocketing.Anger isn't a pleasant feeling. Some of us bottle up the emotion, while others explode in a wild rage (狂怒).Both habits do considerable harm to our bodies, our minds, and our relationships.
“Anger may fee1 uncomfortable and a lot of people think they have to get rid of their anger," says Patrick Keelan, a registered psychologist in Calgary, Alberta.“But anger is an emotion built into us to signal that something needs to be addressed. When we take notice of that signal and actually wrestle with the problem instead of turning a blind eye to it, we' re usually much better for it.”
Unfortunately, many of us have been conditioned to keep our emotions hidden.Increasingly, research is suggesting that this can have long-term effects on our health.Investigators at the University of Rochester noticed that people who contain their emotions tend to live shorter lives. When we're angry, stress hormones are released, which can make us more likely to develop a wide range of diseases, including diabetes, depression, immune related conditions.
Is it better, then, to scream and howl whenever something makes you mad? That's probably the reason why“rage rooms" have popped up in many American cities, where folks are invited to let steam off by violently smashing (打碎) stuff in a“safe" environment. However, the research indicates that when people display anger aggressively, it can actually increase the intensity of the anger -- and increase the likelihood of aggressive actions in the future. It doesn't take much imagination to predict how such behavior can affect your relationship with your spouse, your kids, or your colleagues. It also hurts your health.A large 2016 study at McMaster University found that people are more than twice as likely to have a heart attack after an angry explosion.
If we shouldn't bottle up our angry feelings but aggressive behavior isn't healthy either, how should we handle things that tick us of? It's the extreme highs and lows that cause the damage. If you're able to apply techniques that smooth out some of those peaks and valleys, you can have a gentler ride.

I was walking down the muddy road one day when my cell phone rang. A child's voice on the other end spoke to me softly, "Dad, please come hack soon. I miss you so much!” Unconsciously, I knew it was a wrong number once again. I don’t have a single daughter. I just have a six-year-old son. It is not unusual to receive this kind of calls nowadays, so I replied rudely, "You've dialed the wrong number!” and then hung up in anger.
During the following days, I got the same call now and then. It disturbed me, so I either rejected her or hung up right away rudely. I couldn’t help complaining about this, “What an impolite girl! How can she call me up over and over again?” How 1 wished the little girl would stop causing any trouble to me some day! Suddenly, the phone rang up again. It was from the same girl- It seemed that she would not give up until she got an answer.
She constantly called me up. Even if I did not give her an answer, she still dialed my number from time to time. Eventually I unwillingly answered the phone. 1 heard the weak voice of that little girl, “Dad, please come back now. I miss you so much! Mom told me this was not a wrong number. It is your cell phone number, right? Dad, I am in so much pain! Mom said you were too busy to take care of me. She is tired out from looking after me. Dad, I know you are busy. If you cannot come home, please kiss me again in the phone, OK?” The innocent request was difficult to reject. I made a loud kiss into the phone and heard a weak voice saying, “Thank you.... Dad, I am so... happy, so …happy
