International Friendship Day is a day when friends show     1    (appreciate) for one another.

In 1919, International Friendship Day     2    (found) by Hallmark. It was intended to be a day for people     3     (celebrate) their friendship by sending each other cards. By 1940 the market had dried up, and finally, it died out completely. In April 2011, the United Nations     4    (official) recognized 30th July as International Friendship Day, although most countries still celebrate it     5     the first Sunday of August!

On International Friendship Day, taking a trip together to celebrate is an excellent way to make the day all about each other. You can visit places     6     you first met or go to wherever you promised each other to go. With so many people     7    (live) such busy lives, however, not everyone can plan a big day out for each other. But that’s what makes International Friendship Day such a     8    (wonder) time. 3 . How to Be a Good Friend

Being a good friend isn’t always easy. As the years pass, some people will stay by your side, but many won’t. And you’ll realize that each friendship you keep is priceless. Of course, to have a good friend, you should remember the following tips:

    1

Don’t make a promise that you can’t keep. Nobody’s perfect, and it’s okay if you skip out on a promise occasionally, but don’t make it a regular thing.

Be dependable.

Your friend will need you for support, especially in hard times.     2

Apologize when you’ve made a mistake.

If you want your friends to trust you, then you can’t act like you’re perfect.     3     Though your friends won’t be happy that you made a mistake, they’ll be very pleased if you admit it instead of just pretending that nothing is wrong.

Be honest.

If you want to be a good friend and to have people trust you, then you have to be honest about your feelings and about how you feel about your friendship. If you’re honest about how you feel, that will make your friends more likely to open up to you.     4

Be loyal.

5     Just do it as you’d expect your friend to do for you. Don’t discuss your friend behind his or her back, and don’t n spread rumors.

A.Keep your promises.
B.Take an interest in his/her hobby.
C.If you know you’ve made a mistake, just say sorry.
D.If your friend hurts you. don’t be afraid to talk about it.
E.If your friend tells you a secret, keep it and don’t talk about it with anyone else.
F.It’s hard to rely on a person who doesn’t behave in a consistent and trustworthy way.
G.All the same, you don’t always have to agree with him just because he is your friend.

4 . Have you ever argued with a friend, and said or done something you regretted? Sometimes it can be hard to put things right, especially when feelings have been hurt. Apologizing can understand why you fell out in the first place.     1

Why do we argue?

You might think your football team is fantastic but your friend disagrees; or you don’t want someone joining in your game. Sometimes, especially if you’re angry, things can be out of control and you’ll say or do something you regret.     2    . Arguing and disagreeing with others occasionally is normal — we all do it — but it’s important to resolve your differences afterwards so bad feelings don’t get worse. This is where an apology can help.

    3    ?

We all make mistakes, and apologizing is a way of admitting we’ve got something wrong and will try not to do it again. Dr Jennifer Thomas, a psychologist, believes an apology needs to show the other person that we’re genuinely sorry. Meanwhile, we accept responsibility for our actions and want forgiveness.

What if it’s not my fault?

Sometimes another person may pressure you into taking the blame when it’s not your fault. If you feel this is happening, you had better communicate with them.     4    . If you still can’t agree, you could ask a parent or teacher to help you resolve the problem.

Does apologizing always work?

Sorry on its own might not always be enough, so try to ask the other person how they felt while you were arguing. Explain your side too, and make it clear you’ll try not to repeat the same mistake again.     5    . It may take time for someone to understand and forgive. Even after you’ve said sorry, you could still feel bad but you can feel good about trying to fix things and promising yourself to do better next time.

A.What does saying sorry mean
B.We argue for all kinds of reasons
C.What do we make mistakes in life
D.A genuine apology isn’t a magic wand
E.Here are some ways to apologize to others
F.Knowing how to apologize can help you become friends again
G.Try talking about why you argue at first and explain your feeling

文章大意:本文是一篇说明文。主要介绍了可以帮助修复友谊的一些方法。

5 . Friendship plays an important role in our life. If you and your friends are in conflict (冲突) and your friendship is coming to an end, it’s time to work through hurt feelings and misunderstandings.     1    .

Reflect and write down the good. Before you face a difficult conversation with a friend, stop and reflect (反思).     2    . At that time this friendship brought you joy or excitement. Use that memory as an inspiration to write down things you thank for about a friend. Beginning the communication repair from a place of gratitude and positive sides is going to make the conversation a lot more meaningful.

3    . If repair efforts have not worked in your usual ways, try another way. Send more postcards, write more letters or send someone a book you think they would enjoy. In your letter, include why you think the relationship feels embarrassed—and why you want to repair it. You may realize your friend is going through something. You’ll begin the all-important practice of listening, before you even sit down to talk to each other.

Give it time and try again. The expert noted that friendships may require time to settle back into normal after the conflicts. People differ in how they deal with conflicts.     4    . That lasting uncomfortable feelings may require further attention.

Sometimes a friendship suffers due to a miscommunication. The experts encourage people not to let a single problem break up a friendship. Don’t give up a friendship because one conflict has appeared.     5    .

A.Think of a specific moment
B.You were not aware of the things
C.Choose a different way to communicate
D.Here are ways to help you repair a friendship
E.Instead, it can be an opening to improve a friendship
F.Things can go back to the way they were before the conflict
G.Therefore, give a friendship some breathing room before trying again

8 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

With new faces everywhere, the time in Grade 1 was really tough for me. Since I was an Indian girl, nobody wanted to talk to me. Every spare minute was spent alone, and no classmates would group with me for projects.

Feeling lonely and sad, I was in desperate need of close friends. A girl named Fatin, who was cute, clever and talented, appealed to me deeply. However, she seemed to be avoiding me as well. Being only six years old, I didn’t understand why people treated me like that, I opened up to my mother about all this, almost crying my eyes out.

Mom smiled, comforting me until I calmed down. She looked into my eyes and encouraged me, “Honey, don’t worry. They’re just not familiar with you. Try to bring out the best in you. They’ll befriend (做朋友) you as long as they see your advantages.” At that time, I didn’t believe her, but Mom was right.

One day, my teacher, Miss Barbara, announced that there was to be a speech competition. I really enjoyed joining in speech competitions. Actually, I was quite good at them. The only problem was that the whole school would be watching me and I knew none of my audience.

However, I was determined to do it. I gathered all my courage, went up to the teacher and said, “Miss Barbara, I want to join in the speech competition.” She stared at me, but then I saw a gentle smile on her face. She handed me an application form.

The next day, I arrived at school early to submit (提交)my form to the teacher. Miss Barbara said encouragingly to me, “For a new student, you have lots of courage. Do your best, Diya!” Rarely did Miss Barbara praise anyone. Her words lifted up my spirits that day. Until the competition day, I practised my speech whenever possible. I even designed the necessary hand gestures and did repeated practice in front of a mirror.
