2 . German artist HA Schult is an unusual artist who uses trash (废物)to make sculptures.“We are living in the time of garbage,” says Schult.“I created a thousand sculptures of garbage. They are a mirror of ourselves.” Here,Schult was talking about his 1,000 trash sculptures in the form of humans. He first exhibited them in 1996 in the western German state of North RhineWestphalia.

“They are social sculptures,” he explains.“They are not only sculptures for the eyes. They are sculptures to spread the idea that we live in a time of garbage.” So far,Schult's social sculptures have been on show in Paris,in Moscow's Red Square,on the Great Wall of China, and in the desert next to the Pyramids of Giza near Cairo.

HA Schult's work is unforgettable.Although his work has had a big influence on the art world,Schult remains modest about his creations:“Artists have to learn every time.We are not important. All that counts is the time in which we are living.”

Trash art has been around for years. But it seems that only the popular artists are regarded as true artists when working with trash. Why can't common people be considered artists when they use the same things and change them into some form of personal art?Maybe it's because we all have our own preset ideas of what art is and isn't,or whom artists are or should be.

You can be an artist like Schult if you try.Look at used metal cans. What might be done with them?Imagine them in any number of new uses,or imagine them simply as an art form. What about boxes or clothing? Boxes can usually serve as new storage containers and houses for pets. And clothing?Imagine taking old clothes and turning them into hats or hanging organizers.

A.They served as garbage containers.
B.They reflected environmental issues.
C.They were first shown in Paris,France.
D.They were to raise economic awareness.

B.be as modest as possible
C.make garbage recyclable
D.take diverse artistic forms
3. According to the last 2 paragraphs, the author probably agrees that ________.
A.it takes talent to be a trash artist
B.preset ideas are important to artists
C.trash art can't be seen as a real art form

3 . China officially informed the World Trade Organization on Tuesday that it will ban the import of 24 different types of solid waste by the end of this year as part of a campaign to deal with environmental pollution and protect people’s health.

In response to growing public concerns over the potential environmental and health danger caused by the increasing amounts of solid waste imported into the country for recycling and treatment, China passed a special law in 1995 to control imports of waste materials, such as plastics, slag from steelmaking, unsorted scrap paper and discarded textile materials.

A year later, the country published a list for solid waste imports and began implementing a permit system to control the import volumes and types of waste imported.

However, due to the lack of effective supervision(监管) and the failure of relevant departments to fulfill their duties, solid waste imports have not been effectively controlled.

So far, China is the world’s largest importer of solid waste. According to the Ministry of Environmental Protection, China imported 7.3 million metric tons of plastic waste worth $3.7 billion in 2016, accounting for 56 percent of global imports of solid waste.

Correct recycling of solid waste materials is an important part of the global economy, and moderate imports of scrap plastic, scrap paper and scrap rubber products, such as vehicle tires, can to some extent, make up for China's shortage of various raw materials.

However, the lack of supervision has resulted in the country’s severe soil and environmental worsening.

Given that China’s continuing efforts to push for industrial transformation and upgrading have resulted in a noticeable decline in the demand for the materials recycled from solid waste imports. It is right for the country to restrict such imports for the sake of the environment and public health, and to better adapt to the changed industrial structure.

1. Why will China ban the import of some waste materials?
A.The amount of imported solid waste is increasing.
B.The demand for imported solid waste is in decline.
C.Some solid waste has damaged the environment and public health.
D.People are more concerned about the environment and health now.
2. Which phrase has the same meaning as the underlined word?
A.Carrying out.B.Putting off.
C.Calling off.D.Fighting against.
3. What is the problem when China deals with the imported waste?
A.Some imported waste is difficult to control.
B.The environment can’t afford the imported waste.
C.Some departments haven’t shouldered their duties.
D.Some useful materials are also among the solid waste.
4. What can we learn from the passage?
A.China will not rely on importing solid waste any more.
B.Solid waste plays an important part in the global economy.
C.People are against importing solid waste from developed countries.
D.Some imported waste can relieve the urgent need for raw materials.

6 . CORAL reefs are,in fact,a necessary part of our ecosystem and provide opportunities for human beings to gain a better understanding of the ocean.Unfortunately, they're also disappearing faster than ever.

According to a warning by the US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration(NOAA) on Oct.8,the world is in its third recorded global coral bleaching(白化)since 1998 and 2010.This means no place with coral has been spared,as coral reefs are coming into contact with increasingly warm seas, which is leading to them dying off in large numbers.

Coral bleaching is like human cancer. It happens when corals are under stress from changes in light, nutrients,or temperature. This causes the coral to drive away the symbiotic algae(共生藻类),living within their tissues(组织), which play an important role in providing food for coral while making it colorful.Without the algae, coral reefs become pale and weak.In some cases they are not able to recover and eventually die off.

The current coral bleaching event started back in late 2014 and continued into this year with no signs of stopping. The BBC reports that 35% of coral reefs in the world will likely be affected, and an estimated 4,633 square miles (about 120,000 square kilometers) of coral reefs could die.

The loss of coral reefs is no small matter.Although they only take up 0.1% of the ocean floor, coral is home to about 25% of marine life. This isn't just a problem for divers and fish,as Eakin pointed out.Coral reefs are important globally,he added,as they protect shorelines, produce money in tourism, and help provide food for 500 million people worldwide. So people cannot overlook the environmental, economic and social effects of the loss.

The NOAA warning about coral bleaching came just about two months before a global climate summit(峰会)in Paris, where hundreds of world leaders will attempt to work our a plan to fight climate change.

Oceans will be a key subject during the summit, and Eakin says there's an "absolutely urgent need" for action.

8 . Four Wild Animal Species Were Endangered

Maybe you can still see them at the zoo. But that doesn’t mean they’re doing alright in the wild.

Tigers

All six tiger species are endangered, with Sumatran tigers and South Chin tigers at a seriously endangered status. The main reasons for their population decline are illegal hunting and destroyed habitats(栖息地), as humans clear forests to gather timber(木材)and build roadways. Only about 3890 tigers presently live in the wild.

Ground squirrels

That’s right, even squirrels are endangered, specifically the San Joaquin ground squirrel. Native to California, USA, these guys have been disappearing since 1979 on account of the construction and human developments going through their habitat. Their total population is unknown , but it could be anywhere between 124000 and 413000.

Giraffes

The International Union for the Conservation of Nature recently put giraffes at a vulnerable status, the level just before endangered. The giraffe population has declined 40 percent in the last 30 years, primarily due to loss of habitat and illegal hunting. Some giraffes are killed just for their tails, which are considered status symbols in Africa.

Asian elephants

The main threat to Asian elephants, one of the most intelligent animals, is their shrinking habitat. As the human population grows, people invade their land to build roads and railway tracks. Elephants in Myanmar are at an especially high risk for being captured and traded or used illegally in the tourist industry. Fewer than 50000 are left on the entire continent.

9 . Our environment isn't as green and beautiful as it should be.There are steel monsters blocking out the sun. blowing out dangerous smoke, and letting out poisonous chemicals into rivers, cars producing harmful waste gas, people throwing out waste in a wrong way and all other kinds of sources that ruin the planet.Facing current environmental problems, people need to do their best to save the earth.

You cart see many big garbage dustbins in the streets. They're not there for a show, but for you to drop your waste. We should realize that what we do does count. So next time you get that urge to throw gum or a chocolate package out of the car window,or "accidentally" drop as you walk down the street, ask yourself how much waste you've been contributing to the environment with that bad habit going on for years.

At home, the first thing we can do to protect the environment is avoid letting water run continuously and make sure that taps are not leaky(漏的),which would help greatly in scrimping.Another is to use energy-saving lights, and turn them off before you leave the rooms. It is not only energy-saving,but also cuts down electricity costs.

Recycling is a method to make items reusable. Many things you want to throw out can be made into new products through the reproducing process.Use your imagination to come up with ways on things that you can use again.

Pass the message of simple ways to save the environment on to kids.Starting with kids is a good way of teaching the message early in their lives,in the hope that they can carry it forward as they grow older.

With environmental protection awareness in mind,we can do what we can,for the results are to have a big effect on the planet. As long as we do our part, the world is one small step closer to being saved.

1. In the first paragraph the author uses "steel monsters" to refer to      .
A.big factoriesB.high mountains
C.huge buildingsD.characters in fairy stories
2. From the fifth paragraph,we can know that      .
A.wonderful life comes from environmental protection
B.protecting the environment should start from childhood
C.protecting the environment begins with small little things
D.protecting the environment benefits the country and the people
3. Which of the following is NOT true?
A.To protect the environment may help you save some money.
B.Your bad habits for the environment are a harmful contribution.
C.The more people do their part, the greener the environment will be.
D.Selling what you don't want any more is not a kind of recycling.
4. The passage is mainly about      .
A.the use of garbage dustbinsB.how to save the environment
C.our present environmental problemsD.how to save water and electricity
