6 . The World Health Organization says that about 2. 2 billion people in the world still have trouble every day getting fresh drinking water especially in some countries in sub-Saharan Africa.

Now, the GivePower Foundation has developed what could be a solution to this problem. Since August 2018, the organization has been running a solar-powered desalination plant(太阳能海水淡化厂)in Kenya. The Solar Water Farm brings clean, drinkable water to about 35, 000 people every day.

GivePower says that its project is able to provide 20 years of access to clean water at a cost of only $ 20 per person—bringing not only huge health benefits to the people of the area, but breathing life into poor local economies(经济).

Before setting up the plant, people in the area often had to travel for over an hour just to get clean water for themselves and their families. Most of the time, they had to bathe in dirty water, which led to countless health problems, including deadly diseases and waterborne illnesses.

The world faces an increasing danger of "water wars" because of increasing world temperatures and population growth as well as the inequitable distribution(不公平分配)of world resources. Hayes Barnard, the president of GivePower, hopes that the Solar Water Farm can help lead to a solution for the 844 million people around the world who simply have little access to clean drinking water—and especially those 300,000 children who die every year due to waterborne diseases. The organization has already given over 2,650 solar-powered energy systems to medical clinics, villages, and schools in 17 countries, and they are also now researching four additional places where they can set up new solar water farms.

1. What can we learn about the Solar Water Farm?
A.It benefits about 844 million people.
B.It started to work about five years ago.
C.It is costly but lasts as long as 20 years.
D.It was set up by the GivePower Foundation.
2. What is Paragraph 4 mainly about?
A.Why the Solar Water Farm was set up.
B.How the Solar Water Farm helped people.
C.What people did to deal with water problems.
D.How people's life was affected by water problems.
3. What is Hayes Barnard's hope for the future?
A.Solar power will be used in more fields.
B.GivePower will save more people's lives.
C.Solar-powered desalination plants will help to stop "water wars"
D.GivePower's projects will spread to countries other than Kenya.
4. How is the text mainly developed?
A.By listing facts.
B.By making comparisons.
C.By presenting a problem and then offering a solution.
D.By showing the effect and then explaining the causes.

7 . When it comes to sharks, many people think of their pointy fins and violent nature. But there is more to sharks than their sharp teeth: The creature appeared on earth 410 million years ago, before dinosaurs.

However, sharks are now at the edge of extinction. Numbers of sharks have decreased by 71% over the past 50 years, according to the research published in Nature. “Such sharp decreases are shocking even to experts, especially when compared to land animal statistics,” Sonja Fordham at Shark Advocates International told New Scientist magazine. “This data(数据) may be an underestimate(低估) of reality because of unreported fish catches,” noted Nathan Pacoureau, a researcher of the study team.

The study included 31 species; 24 now risk extinction, and 3 shark species are now classified as highly endangered. The study found the decrease hit the largest species first before influencing smaller ones over time, according to the International Union for Conservation of Nature. It also said that shark finning and fishing worldwide have driven the decrease. “The Indian Ocean is the worst. There is almost no fishery management at all,” said Pacoureau.

“Overfishing of sharks destroys the health of entire ocean ecosystems as well as food safety for some countries,” said Nicholas Dulvy, a professor of Simon Fraser University in British Columbia, Canada. “The researchers are calling on immediate action to ensure a brighter future for these animals,” according to the BBC.

Although the situation looks depressing, the future of sharks is not doomed(注定)yet. 25 species have recovered because of long-term protection campaigns in the past decades. A couple of shark species have started to recover through science-based fishing limits. These examples provide living evidence that the world can set and meet biodiversity goals.

1. What can we know about sharks from the text?
A.They are faced with a bad situation.
B.They began to exist later than dinosaurs.
C.They are well preserved in the Indian Ocean.
D.They became an extinct species 5 decades ago.
2. Why are the data not exactly true according to Nathan Pacoureau?
A.They just focus on the largest species.
B.They may leave out unreported situations.
C.They disagree with some experts’ judgements.
D.They are only compared with those of land animals.
3. What is the leading cause of the sharks’ decrease?
A.Overfishing.B.Natural disasters.
C.The ocean pollution.D.Food source shortage.
4. How is the future of sharks according to the text?
A.Hopeless.B.Bright.C.Dark.D.Unclear.

8 . As a child, Rob Stewart loved the natural world. “He loved everything in the sea, but sharks the most,” said his mother, Sandy Stewart.

Stewart spent his life studying and photographing sharks and other sea creatures, and creating films. Sadly, he died in 2017 at the age of 37 in a diving accident. The accident happened while Stewart was filming Sharkwater Extinction, which members of his crew completed after his death.

Knowing that about 25% of shark species were endangered and sharks might soon be extinct, Stewart worked hard to raise awareness of sharks and their key role in nature. Stewart believed that they should be protected against humans and other enemies. He studied how illegally shark finning has led to a great fall in the shark population.

When Stewart found out about the finning, he tried to end it. As an experienced diver and skilled cinematographer, he was able to raise awareness of the problem by filming sharks in their natural environment. His films, said Sandy Stewart, showed people “how beautiful the underwater creatures are. People would fall in love with them and work to protect them.”

As of 2013, 55 countries had banned shark finning. Stewart lived and died a hero in the pursuit of saving sharks and the sea. He is believed to have saved one-third of the world’s sharks.

Stewart’s parents hope kids will continue his story by supporting shark-friendly actions. They encourage kids to buy or ask their parents to buy shark-free products.

Another thing that young people can do is learn more about sharks. A good place to start is 2 “Shark Database,” an online resource that was created by Rob Stewart’s friends.

“It’s your generation that we want to make sure sees the world that Rob saw and does whatever you can to protect the big fish,” said Stewart’s father. “One person can make a big difference.”

1. What do we know about Rob Stewart?
A.He died because of a shark attack.B.He was interested in sea animals.
C.He led a research team studying the sea.D.He made Sharkwater Extinction in 2017.
2. What did Rob Stewart do to end illegal shark finning?
A.He made films showing sharks living naturally.
B.He encouraged people to buy shark-free products.
C.He wrote to the government asking for a ban on shark finning.
D.He collected information to show the influence of ilegal shark finning.
3. How may Rob Stewart’s action to save sharks be described?
A.Creative.B.Successful.C.Fruitless.D.Unwelcome.

10 . Tropical ( 热带的) rainforests are disappearing at an alarming rate, and according to a new report by Rainforest Foundation Norway, humans are to blame. The world’s dependence on coal, farming, beans, palm oil and mining has resulted in two-thirds of Earth’s tropical rainforests being completely destroyed, and the remaining ecosystems being put closer to a tipping point.

Tropical rainforests once covered 14.5 million square kilometers of Earth’s surface, but now, just one-third of that remains undamaged. Of the original area tropical rainforests once occupied, 34% is completely gone and 30% is suffering from damage. All that remains is roughly 9.5 million square kilometers, and 45% of that is in a degraded (恶化) state, the report says.

Researchers blame human consumption for the loss. While agriculture has always been a driving factor of rainforest loss, the report said that energy consumption, international trade and the production of beans and palm oil, logging and mining have been the largest threats (威胁) over the past century. A significant number of US products rely on resources from tropical rainforests. The country heavily relies on palm oil, rubber and cocoa, all of which come from forests around the world. Often, these resources are harvested from illegally destroyed lands.

Tropical rainforests are home to more than half of the Earth’s biodiversity and have more carbon in living organisms than any other ecosystem. In addition to supporting significant animal life, tropical rainforests are also necessary for slowing down global warming. “These unique ecosystems are suffering from constant abuse, through our bottomless appetite for land and resources,” said Anders Krogh, the author of the report. “We expect that upcoming UN climate and biodiversity summits provide specific targets and measures to protect tropical rainforests.”

The researchers also believe that the loss of tropical rainforests puts the whole world at the risk of future diseases. “Huge deforestation (毁林) is violating nature’s natural virus protection systems,” Krogh said. “The outbreak of COVID-19 should bring rainforest protection to the top of the agenda of all policy makers and world leaders concerned about preventing the outbreak of new diseases.”

1. Why are the data listed in Paragraph 2?
A.To show the serious loss of tropical rainforests.
B.To present the process of rainforest degradation.
C.To stress the role of rainforests in the ecosystems.
D.To explain the reason for the disappearance of rainforests.
2. What leads to the decrease of rainforests?
A.Traditional method of farming.
B.Global imbalance of international trade.
C.The world’s much dependence on clean energy.
D.Human unreasonable consumption of rainforest resources.
3. What can be inferred from the last paragraph?
A.The loss of rainforests will destroy the future generations.
B.Immediate attention should be paid to protecting rainforests.
C.The disappearance of rainforests has accelerated the spread of the virus.
D.Politicians are concerned about preventing the outbreak of new diseases.
4. What can be the best title for this passage?
A.Tropical rainforests are declining
B.Rainforests slow down global warming
C.Humans are to pay for the loss of rainforests
D.World leaders are acting to protect rainforests
