2 . Fear of missing out or FOMO is “a pervasive apprehension that others might be having rewarding experiences from which one is absent”. This social anxiety is characterized by “a desire to stay continually connected with what others are doing”.     1     One tends to show the concern that he or she might miss an opportunity for social interaction, a novel experience, profitable investment or other satisfying events.

Does FOMO make us happy?     2     Researchers have found that FOMO leads us to check social media more frequently, leading to a negative cycle that can be hard to break. FOMO can lead to feelings of depression, loneliness, and boredom. Your mood will be easily influenced by others and your life starts to be controlled by the outside world. What should people do to get rid of FOMO?

Change your focus

Rather than focusing on what you lack, try noticing what you have. You can change your feeling that triggers your FOMO. “Meritocracy (精英) society” is advocated today, but in fact, everyone owns their own success. Try to reduce our screen time, focus on building your own path to success and do what you like.     3

Keep a journal

It is common to post on social media to keep a record of the fun things you do. However, you may find yourself noticing a little too much about whether people are validating your experiences online. If this is the case, you may try to keep a personal journal of your best memories, either online or on paper.     4     This shift can sometimes help you to get out of the cycle of FOMO.

    5

You may find yourself seeking a greater connection when you are feeling depressed or anxious, and this is healthy. Feelings of loneliness or exclusion are actually our brain’s way of telling us that we want to seek out greater connections with others and increase our sense of belonging. Rather than trying to connect more with people on social media, why not arrange to meet up with someone in person? Talking with families, making plans with a good friend, or creating a group outing that can help you to shake that feeling that you are missing out. It puts you in the center of the action.

A.Seek out real connections
B.The answer is definitely: NO.
C.You should be confident in what you do and you’ll succeed one day.
D.Live in the moment, you will find nothing is missing out in our life!
E.As long as you focus on what you like, you will feel content with yourself.
F.FOMO is also defined as a fear of regret, which may lead to a compulsive concern.
G.Keeping a journal can help you to shift your focus from public approval to private appreciation of the things that make your life great.

文章大意:本文是一篇说明文。文章介绍了育儿责任对于夫妻双方事业的影响。

3 . Three out of five women say that their caring responsibilities are preventing them from applying for jobs or promotion, while only one in five men say the same, according to new research.

The poll of 5,444 people by Ipsos Mori and the charity Business in the Community (BITC) found that nearly half of the workforce are combining paid work and care. Almost three in 10 adults have left or considered leaving a job because of difficulties in balancing work and care. The latter was particularly true of women.

The majority of those with care responsibilities in the UK are parents looking after children under 18, but 36% of carers are responsible for an adult of working age or older. Those from a black,   Asian,   mixed race or other ethnically diverse background were significantly more likely to say they have caring responsibilities than those from a white background. As many as 50% of carers from an ethnic minority say their caring responsibilities are holding them back, compared to 39% of white carers.

BITC Gender Equality campaign director Charlotte Woodworth said the results showed the disconnect between what workers need from employers and what they experience. “There’s a lot of competing ideas about how we should try to improve the lot of women, how we should try and create a more levelled-up society. This report tells us very clearly how significantly workplace policies and workplace cultures are undermining those efforts,” she said.

The research shows nearly one in 10 carers are “sandwich carers”, meaning they have caring responsibilities for both a child and an adult.

The charity wants the government and employers to offer new fathers more paid time off to look after their children. The research found that even among women who identify as joint carers, 52% say they do “more than my fair share”, in comparison to 10% of men. One in three men admit they do “less than my fair share”, in comparison to 4% of women.

1. How does the author show the gender difference of caring responsibilities?

C.By reliable facts.D.By several quotations.
2. Which word can replace the underlined word “undermining” in paragraph 4?

3. According to the charity, what can the government and employers do to help mothers?
A.To raise salary for them.B.To give paid holidays to fathers.
C.To offer fathers pay rise.D.To provide them with more time off.
4. What does the text mainly about?
A.More paid time off should be given to men to care.

D.Balancing work with caring responsibilities is a dilemma.

4 . You scroll through Instagram and like every post you see. You read an acquaintance’s story as soon as they post it. You leave a comment on a post or two. Then it hits you: Didn’t you just leave a comment on that person’s post yesterday? And the day before that? And last week?

An Instagram creep is someone who offers unprompted significant attention online to certain individuals they’ve taken an interest in. It is a strategy to send a signal of affection -whether it is to a romantic partner, or a close friend, but it can also be perceived as being too much, too interested and too involved. At worst, it might be seen as being possessive, as the person absolutely has to be the first to comment, to establish his importance in front of others.

However, not every Instagram creep has the same intentions, with some lighthearted and innocent. “For example, people who have a higher frequency of being online may have a higher likelihood of seeing the posts quickly, “said Maryanne Fisher, a psychology professor at St.Mary’s University in Canada. “In a way, it could be simply an exposure effect.”

“If you feel like you’re the creeper, there’s a quick way to fix the problem. Resisting the urge to comment or like every post would be helpful,” Fisher said. It’s important to be aware that while you might be doing it to express affection, it can be perceived as being possessive. You should ask yourself what your intention is. What need is getting met by that behavior? If it makes the recipient feel uncomfortable and excessive, that should be attended to. If it’s a pattern and if it’s a “need”, then there might be something more significant going on.

All told, remember that anything you put on the Internet has consequences. If you think you’re being creepy even for a second, take time to separate yourself from it.

1. Who is likely to be an Instagram creep?
A.An old man unfamiliar with social media.
B.A young guy having a preference for a certain brand.
C.A woman having a tendency to talk online with friends.
D.An adult who is paying special attention to his friend’s Instagram update.
2. What is Para.3 of the text mainly about?
A.Ways to fix the problem.
B.Effects on the recipients.
C.Possible reasons for being creepy.
D.Differences between serious and lighthearted creepers.
3. What effect might a creeper have on the person being “creeped”on?
A.The person likes the behaviour.
B.The person wasn’t aware of that.
C.The person might not feel at ease.
D.The person might feel like the creeper.
4. What does the author want to express in this passage?
A.Less is more.
B.Look before you leap.
C.Love me,love my dog.
D.Put the cart before the horse.

文章大意:这是一篇议论文。技术与我们的生活息息相关,但是当技术真正开始控制我们周围的世界时,接下来会发生什么?文章主要介绍了作者认为技术进步是必须的,人类制造了机器,所以机器不会控制人类。

5 . With the invention of the Internet, humanity is now experiencing an adventure toward technological advancement. Nowadays, technology assists us with everyday tasks such as driving, grocery shopping and even dating. Technology is so closely connected to our lives that it’s easy to overlook one important question: When technology really starts to control the world around us, what comes next?

Many experts and workers are scared that automation will take jobs from people who need them and give those jobs to robots. I understand their concern. However, if robots are outperforming us at our jobs, then what do humans have left to offer? We have the emotions and imagination that make us human. A machine might work faster than a person, but that’s because humans built the machines that way. That, itself, is an amazing accomplishment of the human imagination. We are talented, passionate creatures, who do not deserve to be trapped in miserable jobs anymore!

By now, I hope you’re curious to hear which occupations we should focus on in the future. The obvious answer is jobs in technology and robotics. Tech-related jobs will continue to be in big demand, and people who work in these fields will continue to become more important. We should be grateful to them for doing work to take us higher as a society. Besides, we should also focus on jobs in the arts and entertainment. It may sound crazy, but what could better reflect the creativity of the human mind than the arts? I believe technology has opened up our world, allowing us to share our imaginations with everyone!

So, we must ensure that future generations know that we mean it when we say, “follow your dreams.” Welcome to the 21st century: what a time to be alive! There has never been a better time to be yourself, and I can only see it getting even better from here.

文章大意:本文是一篇议论文。主要论述了“量子计算真的会像它的宣传那样成功吗?”,计算机科学家克里斯·约翰逊和物理学家菲利普·泰勒分别阐明了自己的观点。

7 . Quantum ( 量子 ) computers have been on my mind a lot lately. A friend has been sending me articles on how quantum computers might help solve some of the biggest challenges we face as humans. I’ve also had exchanges with two quantum-computing experts. One is computer scientist Chris Johnson who I see as someone who helps keep the field honest. The other is physicist Philip Taylor.

For decades, quantum computing has been little more than a laboratory curiosity. Now, big tech companies have invested in quantum computing, as have many smaller ones. According to Business Weekly, quantum machines could help us “cure cancer, and even take steps to turn climate change in the opposite direction.” This is the sort of hype ( 炒作 ) that annoys Johnson. He worries that researchers are making promises they can’t keep. “What’s new,” Johnson wrote, “is that millions of dollars are now potentially available to quantum computing researchers.”

As quantum computing attracts more attention and funding, researchers may mislead investors, journalists, the public and, worst of all, themselves about their work’s potential. If researchers can’t keep their promises, excitement might give way to doubt, disappointment and anger, Johnson warns. Lots of other technologies have gone through stages of excitement. But something about quantum computing makes it especially prone to hype, Johnson suggests, perhaps because “‘quantum’ stands for something cool you shouldn’t be able to understand.” And that brings me back to Taylor, who suggested that I read his book Q for Quantum.

After I read the book, Taylor patiently answered my questions about it. He also answered my questions about PyQuantum, the firm he co-founded in 2016. Taylor shares Johnson’s concerns about hype, but he says those concerns do not apply to PyQuantum.

The company, he says, is closer than any other firm “by a very large margin ( 幅度 )” to building a “useful” quantum computer, one that “solves an impactful problem that we would not have been able to solve otherwise.” He adds, “People will naturally discount my opinions, but I have spent a lot of time quantitatively comparing what we are doing with others.”

Could PyQuantum really be leading all the competition “by a wide margin”, as Taylor claims? I don’t know. I’m certainly not going to advise my friend or anyone else to invest in quantum computers. But I trust Taylor, just as I trust Johnson.

1. Regarding Johnson’s concerns, the author feels ________.
A.sympatheticB.unconcernedC.doubtfulD.excited
2. What leads to Taylor’s optimism about quantum computing?
A.His dominance in physics.B.The competition in the field.
C.His confidence in PyQuantum.D.The investment of tech companies.
3. What does the underlined word “prone” in Paragraph 3 most probably mean?
A.Open.B.Cool.C.Useful.D.Resistant.
4. Which would be the best title for the passage?
A.Is Johnson More Competent Than Taylor?
B.Is Quantum Computing Redefining Technology?
C.Will Quantum Computers Ever Come into Being?
D.Will Quantum Computing Ever Live Up to Its Hype?

8 . Going cashless or not

After saving up your allowance, you finally have enough money to buy that toy, game, or piece of clothing you’ve been dreaming of. You go to the store and find the item. But when you get the register to pay, you see a sign: “Hello! We’ve gone cashless.”

Situations like this may become common if more stores and restaurants stop accepting cash as payment. Instead, customers must pay with a credit or debit card, or by smartphone app. Many business owners believe that getting rid of cash has helped them streamline(使效率更高) the way their business runs. Staff members don’t have to worry about having enough money in the register to make change or about delivering bills and coins to the bank.

But a growing number of people think that cashless stores are unfair. According to the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation, more than 8 million households in the United States don’t have bank accounts. Also, many people, including kids, don’t meet the requirements for a credit card. “A cash-less economy is not an inclusive(范围广泛的) economy,” Tazra Mitchell told National Public Radio. She’s a policy director at the DC Fiscal Policy Institute. In her opinion, cashless stores are “essentially discriminating (歧视) against people”. Plus, people who do have debit and credit cards might prefer paying with cash. “Cash is still very popular with consumers,” Nick Bourke said. He’s a director at the Pew Charitable Trusts’ consumer finance project. “It’s used by almost eight in ten adults in the US every month. That’s more than any other payment type.”

Lawmakers in several places have taken steps to ban cashless stores. A handful of major cities, including New York City and Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, have already passed laws to address the issue. In San Francisco, California, a law banning cashless stores was passed in May. It says most stores in the city must allow customers to pay with cash. Derek Remski helped write the San Francisco law. He works for the city. “It’s really about fairness,” Remski said. “It’s about understanding that not everyone has equal access to things.”

1. What’s the major function of paragraph 1?
A.To describe a memorable experience.
B.To generalize the whole passage.
C.To test reader’s reaction to the situation.
D.To introduce the theme of the whole text.
2. What’s the attitude of business owners to going cashless?
A.Neutral.B.IndifferentC.Supportive.D.Opposed.
3. What’s paragraph 3 mainly about?
A.The requirements for kids to open a bank account.
B.The reasons why people think cashless stores are unfair.
C.The relationship between cashless stores and households.
D.A research done by the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation.
4. What’s the aim of the law passed in May?
A.To ban illegal trade.B.To ban cashless stores.
C.To protect cashless stores.D.To ensure business owner’s rights.
