1 . Peter, 60, loved his job as a bus driver. He had been one almost all his life, loving the little children who rode his bus daily. It made him feel much younger. His record was clean, without one accident, which made him a trustworthy driver.

However, Mr. Clark, Peter’s boss, was worried and thought that it was time for him to retire (退休). “You don’t have a choice here, Peter.” he said seriously. “We don’t want to invite any risk to the children.”

“But I have a perfect record,” reasoned Peter. “You know, for an elderly man like me, my job is the only thing that keeps me alive. I want to keep my job.”

“Would you take responsibility if something bad happened to those children?” Mr. Clark said.

Peter thought it over, and very reluctantly, he gave in to Mr. Clark’s request. Peter decided to retire a week later.

The day before his last day, Peter was dropping of the kids at his first stop when he looked out of the window and saw a lady who had passed out. He asked the kids not to leave the bus and got down to help the woman.

Just when he finished, he heard cries behind him. The children were looking out of the window and shouting. “Fire! Fire! Help!” “How could that have happened?” Peter was shaking in fear. With shaking hands, Peter dialed 911 and rushed to help the children. Covering himself with his jacket, Peter rushed into the burning car and took the children out one by one. Thankfully, the firefighters arrived soon and helped Peter, saving all students.

The next day, Peter found the whole school standing in front of his home. When Peter got close to them, Mr. Clark started clapping and everyone joined him. “You are a hero, Peter! You saved the lives of those young children.” he said. “You are the best driver. We hope you can keep the job!”

2 . NEW DELHI—Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi Tuesday inspected the bridge collapse site in the western state of Gujarat, where more than 100 people were killed, officials said. Ahead of the visit, Modi chaired a high-level meeting on Monday night during which he was briefed about rescue efforts.

The century-old British-era pedestrian suspension bridge (吊桥) collapsed on Sunday evening, with hundreds of people falling into Machchhu River in Morbi town, about 241 km west of the capital city, Gandhinagar. Reports said that 177 people were rescued and over 100 people were undergoing treatment at the Morbi civil hospital.

Soon after the bridge visit, Modi reached the civil hospital in Morbi to meet the injured. The prime minister was seen asking the survivors about their health. According to officials, search and rescue operations, carried out by teams of the State Disaster Response Force and the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), the Indian navy, the Indian air force and the Indian army, were called off (取消) on Monday evening and began again on Tuesday morning. Officials said Modi also met with those involved in rescue and relief operations.

The local government of Gujarat has already ordered an investigation into the deadly collapse of the bridge. The bridge is a popular tourist attraction in the area. It was shut for renovation (整修) for seven months and was open for the public on Oct 26, the Gujarati New Year.

Reports said that around 500 people, much beyond its capacity, were on the suspension bridge at the time when it crashed into the river.

Police have arrested nine people including officials of Oreva, the company that carried out the repair work, ticket sellers and security men. However, the owners of the company have not been arrested. Oreva group is actually a Gujarat-based watchmaker company. Reports said that the watchmaker reportedly outsourced (转包) the “technical aspect of the renovation” to a smaller construction company, Devprakash Solutions.

Oreva has been accused of violating multiple safety rules, leading to the huge tragedy just four days after the bridge reopened to the public. Questions have been raised over why Oreva with no experience in construction was given responsibility for maintaining a bridge.

1. What did Modi first do after hearing the bridge collapse?
A.He paid a visit to the bridge.
B.He held and took charge of a meeting.
C.He went to see the injured in the hospital.
D.He met with those involved in rescue and relief operations.
2. How can we evaluate the bridge before it collapsed?
A.It was too old to repair well.
B.It was maintained very well.
C.It had a safety risk.
D.It was solid enough.
3. What can replace the underlined word “violating” in the last paragraph?
A.Making.B.Obeying.C.Breaking.D.Replacing.
4. Which can serve as the best title for the news report?
A.Indian PM inspects site of deadly bridge collapse
B.Police arrest security men after bridge collapse
C.Modi is briefed about rescue efforts after bridge collapse
D.Around 500 people are on suspension bridge when it collapses

Ever since Arick Baker was a kid, his father had warned him: “If you go down in the corn, you don’t come out.”

The tall grain bins store enough dried corn to swallow up a body completely, squeezing the breath and life from a person in seconds. Accidents happen, and they’re often deadly. 26 have been killed in the accidents ever since, and the firefighters responsible for it never had luck rescuing anyone.

However, the 23-year-old Baker wasn’t thinking about the risks. With his dad, Rick, getting older, Baker was increasingly responsible for the farm’s most unpleasant tasks of cleaning inside the tall grain bins, which usually took two days to finish due to its height and size.

That morning, Baker stood right in the grain bin, trying to clean up the bottom, while his father was out helping to transfer truckloads of corn from inside. It was a sweating day, and it was 58℃ inside the bin. Baker was wearing a mask to keep away from all the dust kicked up while working.

Around 10:30 that morning, Baker’s dad left his spot on the roof, where he had kept an eye on his son, and then he drove away the last pile of corn. But just seconds later, Baker felt a roaring storm of corn coming from above. It was another driver unloading corn into the grain bin, and he was quickly stuck firm in the corn before he could even react. “Help!” Baker yelled once, but darkness and silence set in, and he was down in the corn.

Awful to feel himself squeezed, Baker tried to move his leg a few centimeters, but the corn would rush back in to fill the blank, packing him even tighter. Every breath was exhausting, and after about two hours of helplessness, he was wondering how long he could still last.

The truth was, just moments after he drove away, Baker’s father had left his son a phone message: “Hey, Arick. Like a fool, I forgot to wait to make sure you got out OK. Give me a call when you got this.”

6 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

It was a hot day. The sun scorched (炙烤) down and everywhere you looked, you could see the heat waves blowing above the sand. John rolled over, realizing that half of his body was well and truly burnt. He had not meant to sleep in the sun but the heat and late nights studying for his examinations made him miserable. Stretching, he got to his feet, picked up his surfboard and looked around. The beach, which had earlier been crowded in the sun, was now comparatively empty. Seagulls flew down to clean up the food of people’s picnic lunches.

The ice-cream van had gone, and so were the lifeguards who were doing first aid on the beach. John looked up to where the sun was and estimated it was about five o’clock. Time to head home. It was “Mum’s Kitchen Rule” that had him moving homewards. If he did not get home in time for dinner, he would go hungry. Wandering along the water’s edge, he happened to glance out to sea. What made him look up at that particular moment, he never knew, but it was the right time for the swimmer he spotted. His hand was up, signaling distress (险情) and he was calling out something.

Quickly John glanced around the beach — no one else was close enough to help the man, and crucially, no one had noticed. Cupping his hands to his mouth, he shouted “Help” to get the attention of other people on the beach. Someone waved back to him and John pointed to the swimmer. “Get help,” he shouted. Then without hesitation, he jumped into the sea with his surfboard. John was a strong swimmer and had a good skill for distance swimming. His coach had tried hard to persuade him to go into competitions but he was not interested.

文章大意:本文是记叙文。本文讲述了Corion Evans和朋友晚上在河边散步时遇到一辆车落水,他和随后赶来的警察救了三个落水女孩儿的故事。

7 . It was around 11:30 p.m. Corion Evans was hanging out with his friends near the Pascagoula River in July when a car with three girls inside fell into it. It came to a stop some 20 feet from land, and then sank. The driver had blindly followed her GPS.

Evans and his friends got to the river’s edge. In the darkness, they could barely make out the girls holding on to the roof, the only part of the car still above water. But they could hear screaming. Evans pulled off his shirt and shoes, and then dived into the water, a river he knew alligators (短吻鳄) call home. He helped the first girl he saw, keeping her head above water and leading her ashore.

Just then, a man called out. Police Officer Garry Mercer arrived. He dived into the river to help another of the girls. But halfway back to shore, the girl had run out of her strength and went underwater, pulling Mercer down with her. Evans jumped back into the water and helped them until they could stand. “If he hadn’t been there, who knows?” Mercer said.

There was still one girl in the water, Cora Watson, who could not swim. She was struggling to keep herself floating (浮) on the water, scared. “I thought there was little hope that I would survive. I just knew my last breath was coming at that time,” Watson said. “My mind said ‘You’re slowly losing yourself.’” She began to go under. Then, a touch. “Evans had caught me.”

The three girls and Officer Mercer were taken to the hospital and soon they were discharged. After knowing Evans’ act, his mother, Marquita Evans, said, “Corion Evans broke his curfew (晚间必须回家的时间). But I was not mad. He had a good reason. And he did really well.”
