Father’s Day, a day for people to express gratitude to their fathers, is celebrated on June 19 this year. Many movies show and honor a father’s love, so why not choose one to watch with your dad or child. Here we have selected a few classic films themed on fathers. Take a look!

Dangal is an Indian movie centered on female wrestling champions.The father in the movie was once a national wrestling champion of India. He discovers his daughters’ wrestling talent unexpectedly and decides to train them, for which they have to break the convention and make much effort. At last, the girls win the competitions and create more possibilities for their lives, as well as become role models inspiring numerous women.

Looking Up tells a story about the influence of a father’s education. Ma Haowen, the father, always tries to educate his child in his unique way; creating a relatively relaxing environment for his son. The only one requirement he has for his son is to never stop thinking. He hopes that his child can think independently and follow his heart to face the world bravely. With the encouragement and love of the father, his son achieves his dream of becoming an astronaut.

I am Sam tells a story about an unusual father and his daughter. Sam is a disabled person with mental disability. Although his intelligence is just as the same as a seven-year-old child, he loves his daughter with all his heart. When his daughter is taken away from him, he does his best to fight for custody (监护).

The Father tells the story of an elderly father suffering from an illness. Anthony has loved his daughter Anne for his whole life. As he is a highly independent man, he refuses all the help from his daughter, even as he gets old and ill. However, the Alzheimer’s disease starts to take away Anthony’s memories and independence. He forgets everything but he can recognize his daughter Anne.

The hit movie Notting Hill begins with a famous scene. Hugh Grant bumps into Julia Roberts and spills orange juice all over her. After the collision, Grant repeatedly says, “I’m so sorry. I’m so sorry.”

His actions in this scene are very British. If Roberts’ character were from the Britain, then she would probably apologize repeatedly as well — even if the crash was not her fault. But this doesn’t happen in the movie, as Roberts is from the US.

A report in The Telegraph once said that three quarters of British people apologize when they bump into someone in the street — regardless of whether they are responsible or not. In fact, Britons use “sorry” in many situations. For example, if they mishear someone, they say “Sorry?” The person they are talking to will also apologize by replying,“No,I am sorry!” This can go on for up to five minutes as if they were competing over who is the most sorry.

Why are Britons so sorry? Mark Tyrell, a psychology writer in the UK, thinks that their apologetic tendencies are rooted in British class system. “We say sorry because historically the new middle class in Britain had to apologize for not being the working class, but also for really being the upper class.” Another theory is that they apologize to avoid conflicts. For example, if they bump into someone, he might get angry. To avoid this, they instantly say “Sorry!”

True manners are about being considerate,and today’s constant use of apologizing shows that we are perhaps not as thoughtful as we once were.The word “sorry” has lost some of its meaning.
