Passage 1
Last month, on Oct.15, there was a marathon (马拉松赛) in the city of Luoyang, Henan Province. A lot of people in and around the city participated (参与) in it.
It was Sunday. There were some clouds in the sky in the early morning but the sun was shining when the race began. Eighteen boys and girls in my class, as well as four of my teachers, gathered on the south side of Luohe River to take part in the marathon. It was the first time that we had been in a marathon. We were excited and had fun running with people. We had to run 10 km. It was not a race, but an event to challenge ourselves. We helped each other during the run. When someone fell behind, others would go to encourage him or her not to give up. Tired but happy, all of us made it in about 90 minutes.
The marathon is like life, in which we can choose whether or not to keep going when we feel tired or meet difficulties. The biggest enemy is ourselves, whom we should fight with and defeat (打败). We never know what will happen in the future, but what we can do is try our best. If we can keep running, success will belong to us, because it’s impossible to defeat a person who never gives up.
Challenges make life interesting and meaningful. This very first marathon will always be remembered as an unforgettable event in my life.

Passage 2
It was early winter several years ago. I had pulled out my old winter coat for another year’s use. It was still in pretty good shape although it was looking dirty from so many winters’ wear. I didn’t really need a new one but I wanted one and casually mentioned it to my daughter one day. She was such a sweet, loving girl that I should have guessed what would happen next. A few weeks later she gave me a new winter coat as a gift.
I put the old one in my closet and started to wear the new coat every day. Each day, though, when I opened my closet, something troubled me. It seemed a shame that my old but still good coat should just sit there keeping no one warm during the cold winter days. After a few weeks, I took it out and drove to a local charity shop. I knew that there was someone who couldn’t afford a coat but could get my old one.
My new coat is my old coat now. It is getting a little dirty and worn, too. It has black marks on the sleeves. It is in too bad shape to even donate to charity. I wonder if I should buy a new one soon, but I think I will wait for a while. I don’t really need a new one and maybe I can find something else to give to the charity shop instead.
Ralph Waldo Emerson once said, “Want is a growing giant whom the coat of Have was never large enough to cover,” Perhaps the best way to deal with our wants then is to give instead. Love, after all, brings us the most joy. And the more of it you give away, the more of it you have.
1. Which word can best describe the author’s daughter?A.Thoughtful. | B.Wealthy. | C.Easy-going. | D.Hard-working. |
A.It cost too much. |
B.It was looking dirty. |
C.It was not sent to someone in need. |
D.There was not enough room for his new coat. |
A.Telling his daughter. | B.Buying a new one soon. |
C.Sending something else to charity. | D.Donating it to charity. |
A.Love is the key to joy. |
B.Giving fills our wants. |
C.The more you give, the more you lose. |
D.A coat is large enough to cover our wants |

Passage 1
I spent all my money buying my first flat — which meant I had no money to fix my first homeowner’s problem. I was very poor. I was sleeping on the floor because I couldn’t afford furniture. Then I noticed a leaky (漏水的) pipe under the bath. I couldn’t afford a plumber (水管工) but didn’t want to introduce myself to the neighbors by making their ceiling wet.
I took the bus to a nearby store and talked with the nice salesclerk behind the counter. He explained how to fix it, let me try it out on some junk they had lying around the place, and sold me a pipe cutter and a bit of pipework. I went back home, pushed my head under the bath, and with a little effort I got the job done.
It taught me a lesson that has since become a bit of a mantra (口头禅) for me: Upgrade your problems.
Having a wet bathroom floor is a problem — and the day before I bought the place, I would have had a landlord (房东) to call. But once the place was mine, this became my problem. I saw this as progress: You must own your own property to take care of this sort of situation.
Years later, when I founded my professional services company, Ovyo, with my business partner, Adam, this mantra became especially important to how we approach the business. There have been many problems, and there will continue to be new ones. However, we remember the reason why we have these problems — it’s because we run our own business! A late-paying customer is a problem, but it’s one we meet only if we have paying customers. A mistake at our Bengaluru office is a problem, but it’s one we meet only because we have office internationally.
That is why I still keep my pipe cutter on my desk today. It reminds me that, no matter my level of failure, I am lucky to face the problems I do. The more I solve them, the more I upgrade to even better ones.
1. What happened after the author bought his flat?A.He decorated his flat himself. |
B.He had no money to pay for his meal. |
C.He found a pipe under the bath broken. |
D.He called the landlord to meet his needs. |
A.He paid a plumber to fix it. |
B.He repaired it by himself. |
C.He fastened it with some plastic bags. |
D.He asked the salesclerk to help. |
A.Unacceptable. | B.Indifferent. | C.Negative. | D.Optimistic. |
A.Upgrade your problems |
B.Run your own business |
C.Solve your problems yourself |
D.Push yourself to the limit |
Passage 2
“Can we look at the school supplies while we’re here?” my daughter, Julia, asked during a trip to the store. My favorite school-supply item is the daily planner because I struggle with organization. I always dream that the perfect planner will somehow cure me of my delay and turn my life into a paradise (乐园) of order and productivity.
The list of habits I wanted to develop was long. Exercising regularly. Drinking more water. Clearing a junk drawer or closet each week. Reading more books and watching less TV. Delaying less on work deadlines. Spending more time with each of my kids and reaching out to family and friends more often. Making special meals, and doing other things to make my loved ones feel loved.
Over the next few days, I was able to check off several items on my habit tracker. I was pleased with the progress, but I hadn’t done much with the habits intended to improve my relationships with others. I tried to put more focus on those habits.
One morning, I opened my planner and realized that it was Julia’s. The first task was “Write in my gratitude journal.” The second one was “Do something nice for someone else.” Julia was a busy college student. How did she find time to keep a journal and do random acts of kindness? When I asked her about it, she said, “Those two habits go together. Writing in my gratitude journal makes me want to do nice things for other people.”
“What a wonderful thing to do!” I said, “I love that your gratitude fuels your acts of kindness.” I took a plain notebook and wrote, “I’m thankful for...” I prepared my husband’s favorite dinner, sent an encouraging text to a friend, and baked another batch of cookies for Julia to share with her friends.
1. Why does the author like the planner most?A.She often used it while being a teacher. |
B.She wants to keep her life organized. |
C.She is a person of doing things in order. |
D.She tends to focus on working effectively. |
A.The various arrangements the author had a day. |

A.Doing more exercise every day. | B.Completing her tasks in time. |
C.Keeping a balanced diet for her health. | D.Building more close bonds with others. |

Passage 1
Just about 50 years ago, needing money to support my family — my novels weren’t best-sellers — I had the idea of taking the longest train trip imaginable and writing a travel book about it. The trip was improvisational (即兴的). I didn’t have a credit card. I had no idea where I’d be staying nor how long this trip would take. And I’d never written a travel book before. I hoped my trip wouldn’t suffer a lot, though it was obviously a leap in the dark.
I set off with one small bag containing clothes, a map of Asia, a travel guidebook and some travelers’ cheques. I was often inconvenienced, sometimes threatened, now and then disturbed for bribes (贿赂), occasionally laid up with food poisoning — all this vivid detail for my narrative (叙述).
What I repeated in the more than four-month trip was the pleasure of the sleeping car. Writing on board the Khyber Mail to Lahore in Pakistan, “The romance associated with the sleeping car comes from the fact that it is extremely private, combining the best features of a cupboard with forward movement. Whatever drama is being shown in this moving bedroom is heightened by the landscape passing the window...” A train is a carrier that allows residence.
I wrote The Great Railway Bazaar on my return in 1974, and it appeared to good reviews and quick sales. That’s the past. Nothing is the same. All travel is time-related. All such trips are unique and unrepeatable. It’s not just that the steam trains of Asia are gone, but much of the peace and order is gone. Who’d risk an Iranian train now or take a bus through Afghanistan?
But I’ve been surprised by some of the more recent developments in travel. I rode on Chinese trains for a year and wrote Riding the Iron Rooster, but now China has much cleaner and swifter trains and modernized destinations. A traveler today could take the same trip I took in 1986-87 and produce a completely different book.
All travel books are dated. That’s their fault that they’re outdated, and it’s their virtue that they preserve something of the past that would otherwise be lost.
1. What happened at the beginning of the author’s trip to Asia?A.He made full preparations for the trip. |
B.He had expected the journey to be rough. |
C.He organized the trip with his family’s support. |
D.He started the trip out of his passion for traveling. |
A.For its long distance. | B.For its full equipment. |
C.For its reassuring privacy. | D.For its romantic scenery. |
A.He couldn’t write another bestseller. | B.Train trip was no longer popular. |
C.The landscape in Asia was gone. | D.Transportation and travel had changed a lot. |
A.Reflecting on the evolving nature of rail travel. | B.Recalling an unrepeatable journey to China. |
C.Offering advice on preparing for a train trip. | D.Demonstrating the features of travel books. |
Passage 2
It was decades ago now, but it’s still one of the most memorable conversations of my life. On a long, slow train heading north, with nothing to do but watch the rain, the man sitting opposite began trying to talk to me. Like most young women who have learned the hard way to be careful of strangers, I was unfriendly. But curiosity took over when he said that he was just bored, and liked talking.
So that’s what we did for hours and hours as the man turned out to be quite talkative. When the train finally pulled in, we didn’t change numbers. However, I still think about it sometimes on long, boring journeys, before getting a phone out and scrolling silently like everyone else. It’s a rare person who can cheerfully break the social rule about not talking to strangers without any ill intention, but life would be more interesting if more of us knew how to do it.
And that’s why I can’t be as cynical as I probably should be about “Tube Chat” campaign launched to encourage Britons to talk to each other. All anyone is being asked to do is to start a conversation they wouldn’t otherwise have had — maybe with a friend from whom they’ve been apart or a neighbor they don’t know.
Obviously, it takes more than a bit of small talk over garden fences to unite strangers together. More people live alone than did so a generation ago, and the rise in freelancing (自由职业) means more of us work alone too. We socialize increasingly through screens, sending texts instead of bothering to call.
It’s true that the “Tube Chat” campaign of a few years back failed in its attempts to make Londoners talk to each other on public transport. But even city people who would normally die rather than make eye contact with strangers still happily gather in large numbers by the Thames for the New Year’s Eve fireworks. They would get a far better view at home on television — it’s not really about the fireworks, but about being part of something communal (公共的).
There’s no guarantee (保证) that this latest campaign to reconnect will succeed wherever others have failed. But if there ever a moment to stop social disbelief it may start a fire to warm a world that sometimes feels cold. Wherever my train friend is now, I hope he’s still talking.
1. The author introduced her train friend to .A.share her most memorable but boring journey |
B.express her deep regret for losing touch with him |
C.show that talking to strangers can add interest to life |
D.explain why people are becoming indifferent |
A.doubtful | B.supportive | C.confused | D.disappointed |
A.“Tube Chat”, failed in its attempts to unite strangers together |
B.it’s hard to break the social rule about not talking to strangers |
C.people have a wish to be socially connected by nature |
D.“Tube Chat” made some difference to reconnecting people |
A.Keep our desire to connect. | B.Avoid talking to strangers. |
C.Show respect for social disbelief | D.Socialize with our friends. |

If you think that this is about a ten-year-old boy adopting a blind deer, you are wrong. If you think this is about a deer giving her love for her savior then you’re wrong again.
A ten-year-old boy in Chicago, Illinois spotted a blind deer that had wandered into his neighborhood, and he decided to help it find a safe place and give it some food. He made a regular morning habit of doing this before going to school. The roads are a dangerous place for blind animals.

Passage 2
If you had to make one life choice, right now, to set yourself on the path to future happiness, what would it be?
Would you choose to put more money into savings each month? To change careers?
Meanwhile, all day long we are surrounded by messages about what will make us happy, like ads. Other messages are in our daily living. When a friend buys a new car, we might wonder if a newer car would make our own life better. Over time we develop the feeling that our life is here, now, but the things we need for a good life are over there, or in the future.
Looking at life through this lens, it’s easy to believe that the good life doesn’t really exist, or else that it’s only possible for others. However, the truth is: The good life is a complicated life. For everybody, the good life is joyful and challenging.
A.Full of love, but also pain. |
B.Fame was now lower on the list. |

The Good Life, written by Waldinger and Schultz, explains that it is not money, fame or physical health that keeps people happy. Happiness is mostly about positive relationships. The book includes personal stories about the participants(参与者) as well as interesting data that was gathered throughout the 80-year study.
Practice social fitness.
Having an active social life can be more beneficial than you might have thought.
Volunteer.
One of the many opinions this study discovered is that in order to develop better relationships, it is important to make time for volunteering.
