Welcome to the most friendly museum in London. In most museums, there is no shouting and no running, and you must not touch anything. But the Science Museum is different… It is noisy! People talk about what they can see and do here, and there are some very noisy machines as well. If you want answers to all your questions about science, this is the right place for you.
I like to visit the rooms on the second and third floors. You can learn about communications and the environment as well as maths, physics and chemistry. For example, you can find out how people dig coal from the ground and use it to create energy. And in one room they even explain how X-rays let you see inside your body.
The Launchpad on the third floor is the most popular room, and it is my favourite too because there are lots of physics experiments. For example, if you want to fill a bag with sand, you have to control a kind of truck on wheels and move it into the correct place. You can also find out how people travel into space and back again.
On the fourth and fifth floors, you can learn about what medicine was like in the past. If you compare the medicine of the past with the medicine of today, you will feel very lucky next time you visit a doctor!
The Science Museum is interesting for people of all ages. You can always find something new and have a wonderful time there. The museum is free to enter, so you can go in for a few minutes or stay all day. It is open from 10 am to 6 pm. So if you ever go to London, make sure you visit the Science Museum. It is my favourite museum in the whole world!

The Plain of Jars (石缸平原) is a great man-made wonder in Laos, a country in southeast Asia. It is made up of thousands of stone jars. More than 90 jar sites have been found there. Each site has from 1 to 400 stone jars. The jars come in different sizes from 1 to 3 meters tall. Scientists have long been perplexed by their original (最初的) use.
Not long ago, scientists found ancient things and burial (埋葬的) practices at the Plain of Jars. “This will be the first major effort since the 1930s to try to understand the purpose of the jars and who created them.” Dougald O’Reilly from the Australian National University said. “The jars are empty now, but it is possible that they were once used to hold bodies.”
Only a few simple objects, such as a handful of glass beads (玻璃珠), have been found at the burial sites. And scientists think they are from about 500 or 600 BC to 550 AD.
An Australia-Laos research team spent a month collecting data (资料) at the site. O’Reilly said, “Though the stone jars remain a mystery (谜), I hope a better understanding of the Plain of Jars will help have it listed as a World Heritage site (世界遗产保护区).”

Have you ever dreamed of travelling all the way over the rainbow? Well, it’s easier than you think. All you need to do is book a plane ticket to Rainbow Mountain in Peru(秘鲁).
Rainbow Mountain, also known as Mountain of Seven Colors, is a beautiful natural wonder. It lies in the Andes in Cusco(库斯科的安第斯山脉). As its name suggests, the mountain has different colors. It attracts many tourists every year.
But why is it in yellow, green, red and purple? The reason is the ice that covered the area centuries ago. When it started to melt(融化), the water mixed with the minerals(矿物质)in the ground and turned the earth into the many colors.
If you plan your trip to the mountain, try to go during warmer months when there is less rain or snow. Rain or snow makes the climbing more difficult and the colors will look duller(更暗淡). The best time starts in March and lasts for nine months, when there are blue skies and pleasant weather. At the same time, visit it in the morning or during evening hours, either right after sunrise or right before sunset. Very sunny day will probably stop you from taking nice photo.
To get to Rainbow Mountain, you should first travel to Cusco-a province in the south of Peru. Then you can take a drive to Qesoyuno. From there you can start the journey on foot. It takes about a two-or-three-hour walk to the top. This is really the best way, but the trip is very challenging. Because the mountain sits at a very high altitude about 5,200 meters about sea level, so bring enough water and take your time.

Nervously, but for courage (勇气), I hold the rope of my guide dog Coco when we pass by my neighbor’s yard. Walking by Mr. Smith’s yard is the best part of our morning walk … and also the worst.
The sweet smell of the roses in Mr. Smith’s yard is the best. The worst comes from Mr. Smith. “Hello, Mr. Smith.” I greet him as usual, and he doesn’t reply (回复).
But I know he’s there and he closes the gate quickly.
I wonder why Mr. Smith ignores me. Why can’t two people who like roses be friends? It’s a question to me.
Maybe because I’m blind? Disabilities sometimes scare people. But I heard him playing chess with Jimmy who’s in a wheelchair.
Maybe local people dislike foreigners? But he and my brother Joe are friends. Maybe because I’m a girl? But when my friend Helen greets him, he says hello to her warmly.
So Mr. Smith likes Jimmy, Joe and Helen, but not me and Coco!
Suddenly I come to know why he doesn’t talk to me.
I tie Coco to a tree, feel my way and move slowly. His gate opens. “Jenny! Be careful!”Mr. Smith shouts worriedly and takes me by the arm.
“Mr. Smith, I thought you didn’t like me. But now I guess it’s because of Coco—you are afraid of her?” I ask him in a low voice.
“Yeah, Jenny. Your Coco is a very… big dog.” Mr. Smith laughs.
“Your fear of Coco may be big, but our friendship is bigger. I’ll help you.” …

Long distance never separates close friends. It’s easier to make new friends instead of saying goodbye to old one.
When I was still studying in China, my school held a singing competition. I entered it because I really loved singing. I sang with a girl named Jenny. She’s one of my best friends.
Unluckily, I was nervous and I forgot the lyrics (歌词) for a moment when we were singing. I was standing on the stage, looking pale on the face. We lost the competition. I felt terribly sorry, but Jenny tried to comfort me by saying “There will be another chance.”
After about a week, our school’s art festival began. I decided to take part in it. The first person I thought of to join me was Jenny, although I wasn’t sure if she would like to. But while I was asking other people to join me, she said she would join as well. We decided to sing the song See You Again at the festival because I would leave for the UK after I finished the performance. We prepared for it for a long time.
Finally, the day of the festival arrived. As we walked into the classroom, the class started clapping (鼓掌) for us. Someone had written “Sally, come on!” on the blackboard. My classmates gave cards to me After we completed our performance, everyone cheered for us.
It was a really unforgettable and touching afternoon. I want to thank Jenny, who didn’t give up on me when I felt down. I want to thank my friends for helping me, and I really want to thank all of my classmates who were with me in my two middle school years as well.

A few weeks before Thanksgiving one year, my husband and I decided to invite a guest over for the holiday. I called the old people’s home and they suggested Bella, a woman I thought would be very gentle, but I was wrong. Bell was a stubborn 78-year-old lady, and she enjoyed gambling.
On Thanksgiving, within minutes of arriving, Bella dropped her large purse on the kitchen table heavily and, with a wide smile, drank down the glass of wine I offered. By the end of the evening, this strange old lady became our friend. Two weeks later, I invited her to lunch.
Day by day, she became more like a grandma. “Get a child! You’re not getting any younger!” she always shouted at me. Soon I became her personal driver too. The more I helped, the more she asked of me. But when I asked her only child Ralph to help, he refused.
A few months later, I helped Bella find a caregiver because she was too old to live alone, yet she was still the same stubborn lady. Once, I threw away the old table in her house which got her fall over. She was so angry that she didn’t talk to me for a whole week! But at the end of that week, her caregiver called, saying she died of a sudden heart attack. I cried my heart out when I arrived at the hospital, but it was too late.
However, what was completely unexpected was that Bella left all her money to me-$ 50, 000! I knew I couldn’t spend the money on myself, so I gave it away to local kids with a reading program. Bella wasn’t a soft-spoken old lady to many people. Yet the gamble I’d taken years ago when I called the old people’s home and met Bella had made my life richer. I took a chance on humanity, and Bella’s friendship was the jackpot.

The word “zhiyin”, which means close friends, comes from the story of Yu Boya and Zhong Ziqi in the Warring States Period.
Boya was good at playing guqin. One day, he was playing music on his way home on the boat. To Boya’s surprise, Ziqi, a woodcutter who happened to pass by, could understand exactly what he wanted to express through his music. After a long talk, they became good friends. Since Boya had to return to his state, they agreed to meet again in the following year.
Unfortunately, when getting back to visit Ziqi, Boya heard that his friend had died from a disease. I like playing basketball. However, when I went to the local boys’ club to play basketball games, I didn’t think I could do well in it. If somebody passed the ball to me, I would quickly pass the ball to another teammate. I dared not shoot the ball myself. I was afraid that I would miss the shot and be laughed at by my teammates. I watched basketball games and felt the excitement of the players right after they made the shot. “Those feelings wouldn’t be the same,” I thought.
One day, on the way to Starbucks, I asked for some advice from my best friend about what team I should join. “Should I try out for basketball or wrestling?” She asked, “Don’t you love basketball?” I sadly replied, “Yeah, but I was never good at it.” She looked at me with disbelief. “Yes, you are!” I looked at her skeptically, “Am I?” Then she said these words, “If I love something, I will keep doing what I love to do so that I can get better.” Her words inspired me.
I decided to join another club to play basketball. The teams were picked, and the game started. What my friend had said stood in my mind. My teammate passed the ball to me. I received the ball and took a shot. I made it. As soon as I made the shot, I felt the excitement of an NBA player. My successful play was unforgettable. I’ll never forget that day.

Around the world, people are more and more worried about the environment. Many people now prefer products and companies (公司) that care about the earth and cause less pollution. This need for green products has led large companies to change their business.
Before, customers used cheap plastic (塑料) bags, and then threw them away. But now most supermarkets and stores usually provide reusable shopping bags for them. This causes less waste. They also offer more local products, because less energy is needed for carrying them from one place to another.
To help lower air pollution, big car factories are looking for other ways to control the amount of oil. Cars that use much less oil are very popular. Many companies are also developing fully electric cars. They produce no air pollution at all. Both kinds of cars have another advantage: They are cheaper to run and people don’t need to worry about oil prices.
The airline companies face an even greater green challenge. Airplanes use much more oil than cars. So many airlines are now developing planes that can run on some other kinds of oil. They create less pollution and cost less. The companies are also developing a new kind of planes, and some of them use only solar panels (太阳能板) to fly!
Green businesses used to be popular with only a small group of people. But now, more and more companies have to show they care about the environment. Many products are marked “green” in order to look nice. However, people still have to be careful when choosing green products. It’s important to make sure the products are as environmentally friendly as the businessmen say.

Do you want to go out for a picnic on a sunny day? How can you take a “green” trip to protect the environment? Walk, bike, take the subway... or maybe drive a solar-powered(以太阳能为动力的)car!
A team of 22 Dutch university students has created a solar-powered car called Stella Vita. Last October, they completed the car’s first road trip. The 2, 800-kilometer trip was powered only by the sun.
Stella Vita is a two-passenger car with a kitchen, a sitting area, a bed, a shower and a toilet. There are solar panels(板)on the top of the car. And the solar panels can spread out when the car is parked.
On sunny days, Stella Vita can travel up to 720 kilometers with a top speed of 120 kilometers an hour. The energy it gets from the sun can also be used for other things. People can cook, take a shower and watch TV in the car. On cloudy days, the car still gets 60% to 70% of the energy it does on sunny days. How can the car keep going at night? Well, it has a large battery (电池)that can store energy. This allows the car to travel up to 600 kilometers at night.
Stella Vita isn’t the Dutch team’s first solar car since it was set up ten years ago. The team has created different types of solar cars. The team members are working to introduce this green way of traveling. Let’s hope that in the future, we can all travel “by” the sun!

How do you deal with plastic bags from the supermarket? Throw them away or reuse them? How about eating them?
EnviGreen in India has made a bag with natural ingredients (成分). It looks and feels just like plastic, but can be broken down. The bags bring no harm to the environment. Both humans and animals can safely eat them. EnviGreen founder Ashwath Hedge spent four years trying out such a thing of 12 natural ingredients. They include potatoes, corn, vegetable oil and bananas. He made the ingredients into liquid (液体) and used the liquid to make the bag.
Although the EnviGreen bags are much more expensive than those usual plastic bags, they are good for our environment. Usually, it takes 1, 000 years for usual plastic bags to break down. But an EnviGreen bag can be naturally broken down in less than 180 days. It can also be broken down in less than a day in water, and in about 15 seconds in boiling water. Maybe the EnviGreen bag could be a solution to the world problem of plastic pollution.

People all over the world are looking for ways to save energy and natural sources to protect our environment. Here’s an example of saving water.
A doctor called Jack Todd is very interested in cleaning water as well as saving money, so he has tried many ways, and in the end he developed a small and affordable system to clean waste water—the Living Machine. The machine can clean waste water in our homes or in our business.
The machine can clean waste water. First the waste water goes into a big plastic tank. In the tank, the wastes start to break down. Second, a few days later, the water is brought into a greenhouse full of plants and fish. With the help of sunlight, plants and animals, many chemicals can be removed from the water. That makes the water cleaner. Then the water can be used for washing or bathing. Though it can’t be used for drinking or cooking, the water is clean enough to water the flowers, wash the dogs and bathe.
This technology is good for the environment. It can also help to save fresh water and it can help provide the unpolluted water. If we take actions to do something to save energy on the earth, our planet will have a longer life and our life will be better.

In the 13th century, Marco Polo saw many wonderful things in China. One of the things he discovered was money made of paper. People in the West did not have such kind of money until the 15th century. However the Chinese began to use it in the 7th century.
Paper was invented by a Chinese man called Cai Lun almost 2,000 years ago. But it was not made in Europe until the year 1100. Four hundred years later, a German discovered that he could make the best paper from trees. After that countries rich in forests, such as Canada, Sweden, America, Finland became the most important ones in paper making.
Paper can be used in many ways. The common uses include newspapers, magazines and books. But do you know that paper can be used for keeping warm? In Finland, the farmers wear paper boots to keep their feet warm in the snow. And even houses can be insulated (使绝缘) from heat or cold with paper.
However, we have to understand that paper still comes from trees now. If we keep on wasting so much paper, there will not be any trees left on the earth someday in the near future. Every day people throw away about 2,800 tons of paper in our city. It takes 17 trees to make one ton of paper. This means that we are cutting down nearly 48,000 trees every day. The fact is that it takes more than 10 years for a tree to grow.
So we must start saving paper right now. We can use both sides of every piece of paper. We can make useful things out of used paper. We can use china cups instead of paper ones. When shopping, we can use fewer paper bags and reuse them if we have some.
In short, we should keep a balance between using paper and protecting trees, and do it now before it is too late.

It might be strange to wear clothes made out of plastic bottles. But in fact, some clothing companies are already making clothes like these.
The fashion company of Alia Juma’s showed its newest collection at a workshop in Shanghai. Eighteen clothing kinds from the collection were made from recycled plastic bottles. “We realized that billions of water bottles are thrown into oceans every year and it would take hundreds of years to break down. We should use them to improve the environment,” said Alia Juma, the company’s designer. “Five bottles can make a shirt, 10 a dress, and 20 a short coat.”
Many other fashion companies are finding similar ways to save our planet these days. The process is rather simple. First, the plastic bottles are washed and cut into small pieces. Then they are melted(熔化) and shaped into small balls. Then the balls are melted again to form threads(线). People can then use the threads to make different kinds of clothes.
According to Juma, it takes 67, 000 bottles to originate 1 ton of threads. This cuts down carbon emissions(碳排放) by 4.2 tons and water use by 6.2 tons compared with the normal way of making threads.
Some people might have doubts about wearing something made out of plastic bottles. But in fact, clothes made from plastics can be even better than those made from common materials. Plastic threads can also be made into different materials, such as cotton, silk, or even wool. It seems that this innovation(创新) may lead to a greener future of fashion.

Nowadays the pollution of the sea is becoming an increasingly serious problem. How can we reduce the pollution in the sea and make the underwater environment better? Scientists in Norway have invented an underwater robot, which can help a lot.
The robot is 45 kg in weight and uses special cameras to get 3D pictures. It can discover different kinds of pollution at the bottom of the sea. It will help clean-up teams find the areas, where there is rubbish and then they can spend most of their time and money removing the most harmful materials.
The researchers (研究员) put their work to the test in a bay (海湾) in the city of Bergen. First, the robot swam up and down two meters above the seabed, collecting information. Then a computer turned the information into a map, which showed different rubbish materials in different colors. Thousands of objects were discovered in the bay, including bottles, metals, plastics, etc. “Bergen is a place where different industries come together, and the city is quite old, so there’s a huge amount of rubbish,” said Trygve Olav Fossum, one of the researchers. “We think the rubbish in the bay weighs 150 tons to 300 tons.” It is not always possible to remove everything. Some things are more harmful so it’s more important to clear them from the sea.
“Glass isn’t really polluting the sea,” said Fossum. “So if you know there’s an area with a lot of glass, you don’t need to worry much about that and you can pay more attention to the things that are putting heavy metals into the environment.” The maps will be used to help the clean-up teams locate (定位) the most harmful materials so that they can remove them first.
Thanks to the development of the science and technology, the underwater environment can be improved a lot. As well as helping to deal with pollution, the robot can also show where creatures like starfish are on the seabed.

Do you ever find yourself standing in front of rubbish bins, not sure whether the piece of waste in your hand is recyclable or not? To solve this problem, four Hong Kong high school students have invented a smart rubbish bin that uses AI to sort the waste. The students named the bin Waste Collection Point.
Connected to a computer, the bin uses a camera to tell the kind of the waste it receives and sorts it into plastic, paper, glass, or other kinds. To make sure the bin can sort waste correctly, the team tested every product in the school shop and took at least 500 pictures of each one. “To train the AI, we had to take many photos from different angles (角度) , so it has a better rate of accuracy,” said one of the students who built the AI system.
The idea of the smart bin was born two years ago, when the students were in Grade Ten. At that time, people from the city crowded into their village because of the COVID-19. They left behind a lot of rubbish and caused more pollution.
“All the bins were full, and there was even rubbish on the mountain,” the students recalled, “Every weekend, we had to join the villagers in picking up the waste.”
The students decided to develop a special recycling bin that would encourage people to protect the environment. Although school ended at 2 pm, the team would continue to work on their invention until 6 or 7 pm at school. Even when their school was closed last year, they would still meet and work together online.
“Our bin is now in its third generation (代). Before graduation, we hope it can be widely used in the city.” The students said, “Then it will be easier than ever for people to recycle and protect our environment.”
