文章大意:本文主要介绍了伦敦一家与众不同的科学博物馆。

Welcome to the most friendly museum in London. In most museums, there is no shouting and no running, and you must not touch anything. But the Science Museum is different… It is noisy! People talk about what they can see and do here, and there are some very noisy machines as well. If you want answers to all your questions about science, this is the right place for you.

I like to visit the rooms on the second and third floors. You can learn about communications and the environment as well as maths, physics and chemistry. For example, you can find out how people dig coal from the ground and use it to create energy. And in one room they even explain how X-rays let you see inside your body.

The Launchpad on the third floor is the most popular room, and it is my favourite too because there are lots of physics experiments. For example, if you want to fill a bag with sand, you have to control a kind of truck on wheels and move it into the correct place. You can also find out how people travel into space and back again.

On the fourth and fifth floors, you can learn about what medicine was like in the past. If you compare the medicine of the past with the medicine of today, you will feel very lucky next time you visit a doctor!

The Science Museum is interesting for people of all ages. You can always find something new and have a wonderful time there. The museum is free to enter, so you can go in for a few minutes or stay all day. It is open from 10 am to 6 pm. So if you ever go to London, make sure you visit the Science Museum. It is my favourite museum in the whole world!

文章大意:本文是一篇说明文,主要介绍了秘鲁的彩虹山。

Have you ever dreamed of travelling all the way over the rainbow? Well, it’s easier than you think. All you need to do is book a plane ticket to Rainbow Mountain in Peru(秘鲁).

Rainbow Mountain, also known as Mountain of Seven Colors, is a beautiful natural wonder. It lies in the Andes in Cusco(库斯科的安第斯山脉). As its name suggests, the mountain has different colors. It attracts many tourists every year.

But why is it in yellow, green, red and purple? The reason is the ice that covered the area centuries ago. When it started to melt(融化), the water mixed with the minerals(矿物质)in the ground and turned the earth into the many colors.

If you plan your trip to the mountain, try to go during warmer months when there is less rain or snow. Rain or snow makes the climbing more difficult and the colors will look duller(更暗淡). The best time starts in March and lasts for nine months, when there are blue skies and pleasant weather. At the same time, visit it in the morning or during evening hours, either right after sunrise or right before sunset. Very sunny day will probably stop you from taking nice photo.

To get to Rainbow Mountain, you should first travel to Cusco-a province in the south of Peru. Then you can take a drive to Qesoyuno. From there you can start the journey on foot. It takes about a two-or-three-hour walk to the top. This is really the best way, but the trip is very challenging. Because the mountain sits at a very high altitude about 5,200 meters about sea level, so bring enough water and take your time.

1. How does the writer start the passage?
A.By listing a fact.B.By telling a story.
C.By asking a question.D.By giving an example.

A.At noon of a cold day in December.
B.On the evening of a rainy day in August.
C.On the afternoon of a snowy day in January.

A.①—②③④—⑤B.①—②③—④—⑤C.①②—③④—⑤D.①②③—④—⑤

Nervously, but for courage (勇气), I hold the rope of my guide dog Coco when we pass by my neighbor’s yard. Walking by Mr. Smith’s yard is the best part of our morning walk … and also the worst.

But I know he’s there and he closes the gate quickly.

I wonder why Mr. Smith ignores me. Why can’t two people who like roses be friends? It’s a question to me.

So Mr. Smith likes Jimmy, Joe and Helen, but not me and Coco!

Suddenly I come to know why he doesn’t talk to me.

I tie Coco to a tree, feel my way and move slowly. His gate opens. “Jenny! Be careful!”Mr. Smith shouts worriedly and takes me by the arm.

“Mr. Smith, I thought you didn’t like me. But now I guess it’s because of Coco—you are afraid of her?” I ask him in a low voice.

Long distance never separates close friends. It’s easier to make new friends instead of saying goodbye to old one.

When I was still studying in China, my school held a singing competition. I entered it because I really loved singing. I sang with a girl named Jenny. She’s one of my best friends.

Unluckily, I was nervous and I forgot the lyrics (歌词) for a moment when we were singing. I was standing on the stage, looking pale on the face. We lost the competition. I felt terribly sorry, but Jenny tried to comfort me by saying “There will be another chance.”

After about a week, our school’s art festival began. I decided to take part in it. The first person I thought of to join me was Jenny, although I wasn’t sure if she would like to. But while I was asking other people to join me, she said she would join as well. We decided to sing the song See You Again at the festival because I would leave for the UK after I finished the performance. We prepared for it for a long time.

Finally, the day of the festival arrived. As we walked into the classroom, the class started clapping (鼓掌) for us. Someone had written “Sally, come on!” on the blackboard. My classmates gave cards to me After we completed our performance, everyone cheered for us.

It was a really unforgettable and touching afternoon. I want to thank Jenny, who didn’t give up on me when I felt down. I want to thank my friends for helping me, and I really want to thank all of my classmates who were with me in my two middle school years as well.

文章大意:本文主要讲述了作者邀请一位老人来家里吃饭,从而与老人建立了深厚的友谊。

A few weeks before Thanksgiving one year, my husband and I decided to invite a guest over for the holiday. I called the old people’s home and they suggested Bella, a woman I thought would be very gentle, but I was wrong. Bell was a stubborn 78-year-old lady, and she enjoyed gambling.

On Thanksgiving, within minutes of arriving, Bella dropped her large purse on the kitchen table heavily and, with a wide smile, drank down the glass of wine I offered. By the end of the evening, this strange old lady became our friend. Two weeks later, I invited her to lunch.

Day by day, she became more like a grandma. “Get a child! You’re not getting any younger!” she always shouted at me. Soon I became her personal driver too. The more I helped, the more she asked of me. But when I asked her only child Ralph to help, he refused.

A few months later, I helped Bella find a caregiver because she was too old to live alone, yet she was still the same stubborn lady. Once, I threw away the old table in her house which got her fall over. She was so angry that she didn’t talk to me for a whole week! But at the end of that week, her caregiver called, saying she died of a sudden heart attack. I cried my heart out when I arrived at the hospital, but it was too late.

However, what was completely unexpected was that Bella left all her money to me-$ 50, 000! I knew I couldn’t spend the money on myself, so I gave it away to local kids with a reading program. Bella wasn’t a soft-spoken old lady to many people. Yet the gamble I’d taken years ago when I called the old people’s home and met Bella had made my life richer. I took a chance on humanity, and Bella’s friendship was the jackpot.

I like playing basketball. However, when I went to the local boys’ club to play basketball games, I didn’t think I could do well in it. One day, on the way to Starbucks, I asked for some advice from my best friend about what team I should join. “Should I try out for basketball or wrestling?” She asked, “Don’t you love basketball?” I sadly replied, “Yeah, but I was never good at it.” She looked at me with disbelief. “Yes, you are!” I looked at her skeptically, “Am I?” Then she said these words, “If I love something, I will keep doing what I love to do so that I can get better.” Her words inspired me.

Around the world, people are more and more worried about the environment. Many people now prefer products and companies (公司) that care about the earth and cause less pollution. This need for green products has led large companies to change their business.

Before, customers used cheap plastic (塑料) bags, and then threw them away. But now most supermarkets and stores usually provide reusable shopping bags for them. This causes less waste. They also offer more local products, because less energy is needed for carrying them from one place to another.

A team of 22 Dutch university students has created a solar-powered car called Stella Vita. Last October, they completed the car’s first road trip. The 2, 800-kilometer trip was powered only by the sun.

How do you deal with plastic bags from the supermarket? Throw them away or reuse them? How about eating them?

EnviGreen in India has made a bag with natural ingredients (成分). It looks and feels just like plastic, but can be broken down. The bags bring no harm to the environment. Both humans and animals can safely eat them. EnviGreen founder Ashwath Hedge spent four years trying out such a thing of 12 natural ingredients. People all over the world are looking for ways to save energy and natural sources to protect our environment. Here’s an example of saving water.

A doctor called Jack Todd is very interested in cleaning water as well as saving money, so he has tried many ways, and in the end he developed a small and affordable system to clean waste water—the Living Machine. The machine can clean waste water in our homes or in our business.

The machine can clean waste water. First the waste water goes into a big plastic tank. In the tank, the wastes start to break down. Second, a few days later, the water is brought into a greenhouse full of plants and fish. With the help of sunlight, plants and animals, many chemicals can be removed from the water. That makes the water cleaner. Then the water can be used for washing or bathing. Though it can’t be used for drinking or cooking, the water is clean enough to water the flowers, wash the dogs and bathe.

This technology is good for the environment. It can also help to save fresh water and it can help provide the unpolluted water. If we take actions to do something to save energy on the earth, our planet will have a longer life and our life will be better.

文章大意:本文主要讲述了纸在东西方的发明和产生,纸的用途以及呼吁人们充分利用和节约使用纸张。

In the 13th century, Marco Polo saw many wonderful things in China. One of the things he discovered was money made of paper. People in the West did not have such kind of money until the 15th century. However the Chinese began to use it in the 7th century.

Paper was invented by a Chinese man called Cai Lun almost 2,000 years ago. But it was not made in Europe until the year 1100. Four hundred years later, a German discovered that he could make the best paper from trees. After that countries rich in forests, such as Canada, Sweden, America, Finland became the most important ones in paper making.

Paper can be used in many ways. The common uses include newspapers, magazines and books. But do you know that paper can be used for keeping warm? In Finland, the farmers wear paper boots to keep their feet warm in the snow. And even houses can be insulated (使绝缘) from heat or cold with paper.

However, we have to understand that paper still comes from trees now. If we keep on wasting so much paper, there will not be any trees left on the earth someday in the near future. Every day people throw away about 2,800 tons of paper in our city. It takes 17 trees to make one ton of paper. This means that we are cutting down nearly 48,000 trees every day. The fact is that it takes more than 10 years for a tree to grow.

So we must start saving paper right now. We can use both sides of every piece of paper. We can make useful things out of used paper. We can use china cups instead of paper ones. When shopping, we can use fewer paper bags and reuse them if we have some.

In short, we should keep a balance between using paper and protecting trees, and do it now before it is too late.

1. When did people in the West have paper money?
A.In the 5th century.B.In the 13th century.
C.In the 7th century.D.In the 15th century.
2. Why did America become an important country in paper making?

C.Because it had lots of forests.D.Because it was a rich country.
3. What is paper used for in Finland?
A.Keeping warm.B.Making newspaper.

A.Seventy trees are needed to make one ton of paper.
B.Marco Polo found money made of paper in China.
C.Used paper can not be used again.
D.It takes five years for a tree to grow.
5. What’s the best title of this passage?

文章大意:本文主要讲的是将废弃的塑料瓶重复利用,用来制作衣服,创建环保社会的事。

It might be strange to wear clothes made out of plastic bottles. But in fact, some clothing companies are already making clothes like these.

The fashion company of Alia Juma’s showed its newest collection at a workshop in Shanghai. Eighteen clothing kinds from the collection were made from recycled plastic bottles. “We realized that billions of water bottles are thrown into oceans every year and it would take hundreds of years to break down. We should use them to improve the environment,” said Alia Juma, the company’s designer. “Five bottles can make a shirt, 10 a dress, and 20 a short coat.”

Many other fashion companies are finding similar ways to save our planet these days. The process is rather simple. First, the plastic bottles are washed and cut into small pieces. Then they are melted(熔化) and shaped into small balls. Then the balls are melted again to form threads(线). People can then use the threads to make different kinds of clothes.

According to Juma, it takes 67, 000 bottles to originate 1 ton of threads. This cuts down carbon emissions(碳排放) by 4.2 tons and water use by 6.2 tons compared with the normal way of making threads.

Some people might have doubts about wearing something made out of plastic bottles. But in fact, clothes made from plastics can be even better than those made from common materials. Plastic threads can also be made into different materials, such as cotton, silk, or even wool. It seems that this innovation(创新) may lead to a greener future of fashion.

1. What was Alia Juma’s newest collection made from?
A.Recycled plastic.B.Recycled glasses.C.Recycled paper.D.Recycled clothes.

③Melt the balls again to form threads.
④Melt and shape the pieces into small balls.

文章大意:本文是说明文。介绍了水下机器人能探寻到在海底的垃圾,进而帮助人类改善海底的环境。

Nowadays the pollution of the sea is becoming an increasingly serious problem. How can we reduce the pollution in the sea and make the underwater environment better? Scientists in Norway have invented an underwater robot, which can help a lot.

The robot is 45 kg in weight and uses special cameras to get 3D pictures. It can discover different kinds of pollution at the bottom of the sea. It will help clean-up teams find the areas, where there is rubbish and then they can spend most of their time and money removing the most harmful materials.

The researchers (研究员) put their work to the test in a bay (海湾) in the city of Bergen. First, the robot swam up and down two meters above the seabed, collecting information. Then a computer turned the information into a map, which showed different rubbish materials in different colors. Thousands of objects were discovered in the bay, including bottles, metals, plastics, etc. “Bergen is a place where different industries come together, and the city is quite old, so there’s a huge amount of rubbish,” said Trygve Olav Fossum, one of the researchers. “We think the rubbish in the bay weighs 150 tons to 300 tons.” It is not always possible to remove everything. Some things are more harmful so it’s more important to clear them from the sea.

“Glass isn’t really polluting the sea,” said Fossum. “So if you know there’s an area with a lot of glass, you don’t need to worry much about that and you can pay more attention to the things that are putting heavy metals into the environment.” The maps will be used to help the clean-up teams locate (定位) the most harmful materials so that they can remove them first.

Thanks to the development of the science and technology, the underwater environment can be improved a lot. As well as helping to deal with pollution, the robot can also show where creatures like starfish are on the seabed.

D.People shouldn't throw harmful materials into the sea.
4. Why did the writer take glass for example in Paragraph 4?
A.To show it is always possible to remove everything.
B.To explain how serious the water pollution is in the bay.
C.To tell us the most harmful things should be removed first.

文章大意:本文主要介绍了一项新的发明——智能垃圾箱。

Do you ever find yourself standing in front of rubbish bins, not sure whether the piece of waste in your hand is recyclable or not? To solve this problem, four Hong Kong high school students have invented a smart rubbish bin that uses AI to sort the waste. The students named the bin Waste Collection Point.

Connected to a computer, the bin uses a camera to tell the kind of the waste it receives and sorts it into plastic, paper, glass, or other kinds. To make sure the bin can sort waste correctly, the team tested every product in the school shop and took at least 500 pictures of each one. “To train the AI, we had to take many photos from different angles (角度) , so it has a better rate of accuracy,” said one of the students who built the AI system.

The idea of the smart bin was born two years ago, when the students were in Grade Ten. At that time, people from the city crowded into their village because of the COVID-19. They left behind a lot of rubbish and caused more pollution.

“All the bins were full, and there was even rubbish on the mountain,” the students recalled, “Every weekend, we had to join the villagers in picking up the waste.”

The students decided to develop a special recycling bin that would encourage people to protect the environment. Although school ended at 2 pm, the team would continue to work on their invention until 6 or 7 pm at school. Even when their school was closed last year, they would still meet and work together online.

“Our bin is now in its third generation (代). Before graduation, we hope it can be widely used in the city.” The students said, “Then it will be easier than ever for people to recycle and protect our environment.”

Asking for advice can be scary? In a recent study, 74 percent said they were afraid to ask for advice. But people who ask for advice are easier to succeed at a task.     1     Here are a few tips.

2     It might be easy to ask all people around you for advice at once, but will you value all advice? Probably not. It might be better to choose one or two people whose opinions you value the most. You can ask for advice from people who have experience in the topic.

Be specific (具体的) in your questioning.     4     Do you ask a business owner, “What advice do you have for me?” No, because it’s not specific enough. Instead, try asking, “What college classes did you find helpful for starting a business?”

5     If you can’t solve your problem by following the first person’s advice, why not ask someone else who may have a different opinion?

The key is: Don’t be afraid to ask for advice.

B.So how do you ask for advice?
C.Ask someone for advice politely.
D.Ask somebody for a second opinion.

When you are in a new place or trying to find your way around, it’s important and necessary to know how to ask for directions. It can help you get to your destination (目的地) faster and avoid getting lost.     1     Don’t worry. This passage will help.

The first and most important step is to start the conversation politely. Using polite expressions shows respect for the person you’re asking.     2     If possible, put on a smile.

Once you’ve started the conversation, you’d better ask for directions by using simple sentences.     3    .

➢Could you please tell me the way to the book shop?

➢Excuse me. Can you give me directions to this house?

➢What’s the best way to reach Donald Street?

When receiving directions, it’s important to make sure that you’ve understood them correctly to avoid getting lost or taking a longer path.     4     This not only shows that you’ve been listening carefully but also provides a chance to correct any misunderstandings. Here are some expressions to help you, too.

➢Let me make sure I understood correctly; I should turn left, is that right?

    5

➢Would it be possible for you to write down the directions for me?

Finally, when you have the information you need, don’t forget to thank the person for his/her help.

A.Did you say I need to turn left at the central park?
B.This makes him/her more likely (可能的) to help you.
C.However, many English learners may find it difficult to ask for directions in English.
D.It’s not enough to just ask a question correctly.

Children need time to stand and stare. They should be allowed to get bored so that they can develop their ability to be creative.

1     However, research shows that it may hamper (妨碍) the development of their imagination, while boredom can give them opportunities to develop creativity.

Boredom often goes along with loneliness, but a writer named Meera Syal said boredom had helped her in developing her mind.     2     Having few things to do, Syal often talked with her neighbors. She also tried to do things like learning to bake cakes. “But importantly, I thought and wrote a lot, because I was bored,” Syal said. She kept a diary, filling her time with short stories and poems she made up.

Grace Perry, an artist, grew up in a family with little money. She enjoyed herself by making up stories, drawing pictures for her stories and reading many books in the library. Bored but free, she spent hours looking out of the window, watching the changing clouds and seasons.     3     She became creative, because she could think freely.

Usually, when children have nothing to do, they would turn on the TV, the computer, or the phone.     4     But they need to have time to think about their experiences through play or just watching the world around them.

5     On the other hand, the TV or phone may cut short the thinking process. That can be harmful to the development of creativity. “For developing the ability to be creative,” Dr. Belton advised, “perhaps we need to stand and stare, and stay offline from time to time.”

A.Their time on these things has increased.
B.She told researchers about her childhood.
C.Most children feel bored about their school life.
D.She filled up her free time with what she liked.
E.It is this kind of thinking that can inspire the imagination.
F.Children are expected by their parents to be reading a textbook all the time.
