Nail biting (咬指甲) usually begins in childhood and can continue through adulthood.
It can also cause possible bacterial infection in your nail beds and mouth. To help you stop biting your nails, doctors recommend the following tips:
Keep your nails short.
Identify your triggers (诱因). These could be physical triggers, such as the presence of hangnails (逆刺皮), or other triggers, such as boredom, stress, or anxiety. By finding out the causes, you can know how to avoid these situations.
Replace the nail-biting habit with a good habit. When you feel like biting your nails, try playing with a stress ball or something else instead.
Try to stop biting your nails step by step.
A.Try to remind yourself about it. |
B.Having short nails provides nothing to bite. |
C.Accordingly, you can develop a plan to stop. |
D.This will help keep your hands busy and away from your mouth. |
E.Try to stop biting one set of nails, such as your thumb nails, first. |
F.But repeated nail biting can make the skin around your nails feel sore. |
G.If you’ve repeatedly tried to quit and the problem sticks, see a doctor. |

The most important thing: don’t raise your voice. That will just make the other person lose their temper too.
And my final tip is that, if necessary, you can call “Time out”, like in a sports match. If an argument is getting out of control, you can say to the other person, “listen, I’d rather talk about this tomorrow when we’ve both calmed down”. You can then continue the discussion the next day when perhaps both of you are feeling less tense and angry.
I want to say one last important thing.
A.It is also very important to stick to the point. |
B.Some people think that arguing is always bad. |
C.You may believe that arguing is impossible to avoid. |
D.The second thing is that you should find a good topic. |

G.If you find yourself doing this, stop for a moment and take a deep breath. |

The Great Nobel Prize winner in medicine, Dr. Alexis Carrel, once said, “Businessmen who do not know how to fight worry die young.”
Get the facts
Why is it so important to get the facts? Because unless we have the facts, we can’t possibly even attempt to solve our problems intelligently. Without the facts, we will be left in confusion.
However, getting all the facts in the world won’t do any good until we figure out what these facts mean and interpret them. It is much easier to achieve this after writing them down. In fact, merely writing the facts on a piece of paper and stating our problem clearly goes a long way toward helping us to reach a sensible decision. Therefore, when we are worried, sit down and write down two questions – and the answers to these questions, “What am I worrying about?” and “What can I do about it?”
Arrive at a decision
Worry is killing. So we will probably save our life by sitting down and writing out all the various steps we could take and then writing down the probable consequences of each step and calmly coming to a decision. Experience has proved the enormous value of arriving at a fixed decision.
Act on that decision
A.Analyze the facts. |
B.Write down our worries. |
C.This is the chief cause of worry. |
D.There comes a time when we must decide. |
E.Once we have made a decision, go into action. |
F.And so do housewives, horse doctors and bricklayers. |
G.It is the failure to reach a definite decision that drives men mad. |

However, before such an adventure, there are some practical decisions that need to be made. One such decision is choosing where to live.
Will you stay in your own apartment where you can have your own space and privacy? Will you share a flat with other young foreigners who are in a similar position to you? Or will you choose to live with a host family? For me, choosing to live with a French family was the best choice I made, and here is why.
Firstly, a family can show you around the city or town and help you settle in, stopping you from feeling lonely. When you’re in a new environment, you might feel lost, tired and homesick — I know I did. However, my host family were wonderful and welcoming; they showed me which buses to take to get to work, cooked dinner for me, and took me with them on trips to the beach and the theatre. These were great chances to experience French culture and build relationships.
Above all, living with French people has helped me improve my language skills. Being constantly exposed to French conversations has allowed me to learn new phrases, widen my vocabulary and even improve my accent. My host family are happy to answer my questions and correct me when I say things wrong.
Finally, the experience of living abroad is one that you will not forget forever, and perhaps the friendships — like the memories — will also last. I hope to remain in contact with my host family long after I leave France because when I was away from my friends and loved ones, they welcomed me and made me part of their family.

Well, thanks to Brazilian doctor Claudio Gil Araujo, there is now a simple test you can perform right at home in just a few seconds that could predict how many years you have left to live, according to “Discover”.
Begin by standing straight in the middle of a room. Without using your arms or hands, carefully squat (蹲) into a cross-legged sitting position. Once you are comfortable, attempt to stand back up from the sitting position again, without using your arms or hands for help. The test is scored on a point scale between 1 and 10 (5 points for sitting, 5 more points for standing back up). Each time you use an arm or a hand for help in balancing during the test, you subtract (减去) one point from 10 possible points and half a point is subtracted each time you lose your balance.
It seems like a pretty simple test of training, but Araujo found that it could predict life expectancy. He tested it on more than 2,000 of his patients aged 51 to 80, and found that people who scored less than 8 points on the test were twice as likely to die within the next six years. Those who scored three points or less were five times more likely to die within that same time. Overall, each point achieved in the test meant a 21-percent reduction in mortality (死亡率).
Araujo’s study was only performed on patients older than 50, so the results won’t mean the same thing for younger ones taking the test. But without considering your age, the test should provide a useful benchmark (基准) for your health. If you are younger than 50 and have trouble with the test, it ought to be a wake-up call. The good news is that the younger you are, the more time you have to get into better shape.

B.Squat into a cross-legged sitting position and keep the action. |
C.Try to keep their balance without using arms or hands for help. |
D.Try to stand back up from the sitting position as soon as possible. |
A.The test is only suitable for people who are older than 50 years old. |
B.The test has the same benchmark upon old people and young people. |
C.Younger people can also use the test to be a benchmark for their health. |
D.Older people should take the test seriously to predict the life expectancy. |
A.The Younger to Do the Test, the Longer to Live |
B.The Older to Do the Test, the Longer to Live |

Antibacterial hand sanitizers(免洗洗手液)are marketed as a good alternative(替代品)when soap and water are not available. Manufacturers say that their sanitizers kill 99.9 percent of germs(细菌), but research suggests that this not the case.
How do hand sanitizers work?
Most sanitizers are alcohol-based; they work by removing the outer layer of oil on our skin, then the alcohol kills the bacteria.
However, Barbara Almanza, associate professor at Purdue University, notes that hand sanitizers do not significantly reduce the amount of bacteria, and in some cases, can increase it.
So the question arises, how can manufacturers say sanitizers kill 99.9 percent of bacteria?
How can manufacturers make the 99.9 percent claim(声称)?
Manufacturers test their products on bacteria-tainted surfaces. In this controlled environment, hand sanitizers do kill 99.9 percent of bacteria. However, the human hand is a lot more complex and goes through a lot of different changes in a day compared to a controlled surface.
These tests allow manufactures to obtain consistent results. But , in reality, how effective are hand sanitizers in killing bacteria in everyday life?
Hand sanitizer VS hand soap and water
Almanza says that soap and water are the best way to clean your hands. Hand sanitizer cannot and should not be a direct replacement.
However, they are a useful alternative. To effectively kill bacteria, studies recommend that people use sanitizers that are at least 60 percent alcohol. Also, sanitizers won’t work if you have dirty hands, so wipe them with a tissue or napkin before sanitizing.
What about antibacterial soaps?
Research has shown that regular soap is just as effective as antibacterial soap in reducing bacteria-related illnesses.
In fact, some consumer antibacterial soap may increase some bacteria’s resistance to antibiotics(抗生素), making them more dangerous.
Other studies show that overly clean environments will negatively affect children by preventing their immune(免疫的)system development. Children need to fight off common germs to develop their immune systems.
