Suddenly, all you can think about is how much you need a snack. If that sounds familiar, you’re not alone. Researchers from McMaster University in Canada studied the effects of junk food ads.
The researchers examined the effects of advertising junk food on more than 6.000 kids through TV commercials and other types of media. They found that kids made unhealthy food and drink choices as quickly as 30 minutes after seeing the ads.
“There is too much unhealthy food advertising out there, which appears repeatedly,” says Behnam Sadeghirad. He’s one of the researchers who led the study. “This is dangerous for younger children because they lack self-discipline and don’t know the advertised foods are healthy or not.”
Food and drink ads are everywhere, from TV to the Internet. Companies want to make sure you know about their products. They spend nearly $1.8 billion a year on food ads aimed at kids, according to a report. The Nielsen Company tracked the number of food ads that kids saw in 2015.
It found that kids watched nearly 12 food ads on TV each day. Most of these ads weren’t for healthy foods. In fact, on average, kids saw only one ad per week for fruit and vegetables. Instead, most of the ads were for fast food, candy and sugary drinks.
Jennifer Harris, a professor at the University of Connecticut, says this is a big part of the problem. “Unhealthy foods are not things we should be encouraging kids to eat more often,” says Harris." But unfortunately those are the products being advertised to them the most.”
Health experts say it’s OK to treat yourself to a cookie once in a while. But what can you do to keep from having an unhealthy snack every time you see an ad for junk food? Harris says it’s important to learn to spot the techniques companies use in their ads. “What kids can do is notice what’s going on,” says Harris. “Think about, ‘Are these the products that are really good for my physical health?’”

“Organic product is always better,” Wilson said. “The food is free of pesticides(农药), and you are generally supporting family farms instead of large farms. And more often than not that it is locally grown and seasonal, so it is more tasty.” Wilson is one of the growing number of shoppers buying into the organic trend, and supermarkets across Britain are counting on more like him as they grow their organic food business. But how many shoppers really know what they are getting, and why are they willing to pay a higher price for organic product? Market research shows that Wilson and others who buy organic food can generally give clear reasons for their preferences—but their knowledge of organic food is far from complete. For example, small amounts of pesticides can be used on organic products. And about three quarters of organic food in Britain is not local but imported(进口)to meet growing demand. “The demand for organic food is increasing by about one third every year, so it is a very fast-growing market,” said Sue Flock, a specialist in this line of business.

Americans drink a lot of juice. The average adult drinks 6.6 gallons per year. More than half of preschool-age children drink juice every day. These children drink about 10 ounces every day. That is more than twice the amount that is good for them. Fruit juice contains some nutrients (营养物). But it has tons of sugar. One 12-ounce glass of orange juice contains ten teaspoons of sugar. That is about what is in a can of Coke.
The government is not right when it says up to half of daily fruit servings can be served in the form of 100 percent juice. One-hundred-percent fruit juice is not a natural source of vitamins and calcium. The government also recommends drinking fortified (增加营养的) orange juice. This is to get vitamin D. Some brands of juice are even marketed to babies. So what parents should do is read the label and be more careful.
Government food programs for kids are also at fault. Children in these programs drink more fruit juice than they should.
Drinking fruit juice is not the same as eating the whole fruit. Fruits like apples and grapes reduce the risk of diabetes (糖尿病). Drinking fruit juice is the opposite. Juice has more concentrated sugar and calories. It also has less fiber. Juice is easy to drink. It is harder to eat the whole fruit.
No expert says that juice improves health. It is like other sugary drinks. You can drink it one once in a while. But it is not because your body needs it. Parents should serve their kids water. They should serve the whole fruit. Schools and day care centers should stop serving juice. Government guidelines should not say that fruit juice is like the whole fruit.

The Parkrun phenomenon began with a dozen friends and has inspired 400 events in the UK and more abroad. The events are free, staffed by thousands of volunteers. Runners range from four years old to grandparents; their times range from Andrew Baddeley’s world record of 13 minutes 48 seconds up to an hour.
Parkrun is succeeding where London’s Olympic “legacy (传承)” is failing. Ten years ago on Monday, it was announced that the Games of the 30th Olympics would be to inspire a nation of sport lovers away from their couches (沙发). The population would be fitter, healthier and produce more winners. It has not happened. Officials are still wondering why London Olympics failed to “inspire a generation”. The success of Parkrun offers answers.
Parkrun is not a race but a time trial: Your only competitor is the clock. This kind of sport welcomes anybody. Both new runners and champion runners can have a lot of fun. The Olympic Games, by contrast, wanted to produce more elite athletes. The stress on success kept newcomers from taking part.
In fact, state involvement in planning community sports associations is a bit overdone. If there is a role for government, it should really be getting involved in providing common goods — making sure there is space for playing fields and the money to build tennis and netball courts, and encouraging all these activities in schools. But all the while governments have been busy with selling green spaces, taking money from local authorities and declining attention on sports in education. Instead of wordy, worthy strategies, future governments need to do more to provide the conditions for sports to develop, or at least not make them worse.

But new research has found that even a super-quick run could have great health benefits. In fact, it seems that just a 10-minute run will not only make us feel better, but could actually improve brain health, too. Now, we all know that exercise can improve mental and physical health in many ways.
But when it comes to mental well-being, there’s been relatively little research done on the specific benefits of running, compared with other physical activities, such as cycling. So this was something put to the test during a recent study. Researchers from University of Tsukuba in Japan asked participants (参加者) to run on a treadmill (跑步机) for just 10 minutes. They then had to take a Stroop Color and Word Test which is used to measure reaction time in brain processing. Results showed there was a highest point in self-reported pleasure and an increase in degree of activity of the brain.
In other words, runners were found to have an increase in blood flow in the part of the brain that’s associated with dealing with functions and controlling mood (情绪). Researchers then compared these results to a similar study on cycling, which also showed improved cognition (认知), but no mood improvement. Therefore, it seems various types of exercise can make us feel differently.
The authors noted, “Given exercise is medicine, the effects of drugs differ depending on the type of drug, and different types of exercise such as running and cycling should be observed to have different effects on mental health and brain functions as well.”
So pushing ourselves to get outside for a run really will make us feel better, probably more than other fitness activities. And these findings show that we don’t necessarily need to do a lot of exercise to feel the benefit of it.

However, I did love to run because I felt as if I was flying but this all changed two years ago when I suffered a knee injury. I was bedridden for two weeks and I had a difficult time moving even short distances. I literally cried myself on my way to the car for a few days.
When therapy wasn’t working well for me, I signed up for a hot yoga class for girls, Bikram Yoga to be exact. Starting a yoga practice was truly a godsend because it helped me gain strength in my knees but, most importantly, yoga helped me attain a more peaceful state of mind, body and spirit.
Since each class was heated to 105°F, every time I stepped foot in the yoga studio, I’d feel a surge(涌起) of negative thoughts come upon me like a big ocean wave. Some of these thoughts were, in the beginning of my practice, so strong that I walked out of the class several times. However, as the months passed by, I noticed that when I didn’t get swayed away by my negative thoughts, I could stay in the hot room for longer.
After 3 – 4 months of practicing hot yoga, my arms and legs were beginning to get definition. I also woke up with so much more energy than I had before starting my yoga practice and I gradually started shedding the pounds from my body. Yoga literally made me feel as if I’d taken a shot of energy drink and just gave me that burst that helped my knees heal and made my overall health better.
As I saw some of my classmates do poses that looked appealing to me, I started to think maybe I could do them too. Therefore, yoga helped show me that I have no real limitations physically unless I set those limitations myself through eating junk and thinking in negative limiting terms.
Also, practicing yoga in front of a mirror helped me connect with myself and practicing with a group of people really helped me to feel a greater sense of connection with humanity whereas before I didn’t. Overall, this yoga practice has helped me to see I’m part of a bigger picture in life!
