On May 15, 2018, a team of mountain climbers from Peking University(北大) reached the top of the world’s highest mountain to celebrate the university’s 120th birthday .They practised for two years for their climb to the summit.
The team has fourteen climbers: seven students from the Mountaineering Association of Peking University (MAPKU北大山鹰社) , two teachers and five alumni. The youngest of them is only twenty-one and the oldest one is in his fifties. Twelve of them made it to the summit of Mountain Qomolangma , as one of the team members felt sick and another stayed in the camp to help the team when they came back from the top.
To our surprise, the first member to reach the summit was a girl named WeiWei. It was the third time for her to reach the top of this mountain. Peking University alumnus Huang Nubo, who led the team, said ,“Reaching the top of the mountain was not the only goal.” “It’s more important to know how the team work closely and fight with difficulties when climbing high. It is also the spirit of the University,” he said. Started in 1989, the MAPKU now is the most famous amateur mountaineering club in China. In 1998, three members reached the 8,201-metre Mount Cho Oyu, the world’s sixth-highest mountain, to celebrate their university’s 100th birthday. Besides, they also held activities to save animals and plants as well as protect mountains.

Rowing is a good sport for people. The sport is not so commonly played in China, but almost half of all American high schools have rowing teams. Recently, the school where I study had a rowing season that gave me many great experiences.
During the season, we practiced rowing a lot. We got up at six every Saturday morning and practiced for three hours out on the river. Each one of us had an oar(浆), and we each rowed one oar with both hands. Together we pulled the oars, and the oars pushed the water back so the boat would move forward. After three hours of practice, we often felt very tired, because rowing is a very physical sport. When you row, you do a lot of work with your thighs and back.
Though the practices were very hard, I chose to do them because I like the joy hard work brings. At every practice, I always did my best. Even when the coaches were not there, I kept rowing hard with my hands because I wanted to find out how well I could do. In order to move the boat fast, everyone on the team must keep the same pace (速度), so we needed to work together.
The hard work I did during the rowing helped me develop my teamwork qualities. The experience also taught me that if you want to get something, you need to pay something first. As Americans like to say, “No pains no gains!”

Jose
I am working in London looking after two small children. I love my job, but sometimes the way that English people speak is a little puzzling(令人迷惑的). For example, I also hear them say things like “more friendlier”, I think it should be “more friendly”. It also seems to be common for them to say “we was” instead of “we were”. Can you explain this? Would it be impolite for me to correct them?
Lana
Could you please give me some advice on a problem I have at the moment with my English studies? I came to the UK to improve my English, but the college I am studying in at present is full of people from my own country. Although the teachers tell us we should try to speak in English with each other, it’s very difficult to do this. I am worried that my speaking will not improve.

When he was 12, his parents died. He was alone and didn’t get on well with others. People always laughed at him. No one showed kindness to him.
His only friend was a dog named Tige. He gave his dog enough to eat and drink, but sometimes he was not polite to it. He didn’t know that an unkind world sometimes could cut one’s heart like a knife.
One day as he walked down the street, a young lady was walking in front of him. Suddenly one of her bags dropped from her arms. As she stopped to pick it up, she dropped other bags. He came to help her. “Thank you, dear! You are a nice little boy!” she said kindly, smiling.
A special feeling came to him. These were the first kind words he had ever heard. He watched her until she went far away, and then he whistled(吹口哨) to his dog and went directly to the river nearby.
“Thank you, dear! You are a nice little boy!” he repeated the woman’s words. Then in a low voice he said to his dog! Tige raised its ears as if it understood.
“Uhurn! Even a dog likes it!” he said, “Well, Tige, I won’t say unkind words to you any more.” Tige waved its tail happily.
The boy thought and thought. Finally, he looked at himself in the river. He saw a clean nice boy. He was amazed. From then on, he had a new life.

This discovery of water under the Mars’ South Pole is the result of radar echoes (雷达回波) that were picked up by an instrument on a spaceship that’s been moving around Mars for 15 years. To stay liquid (液体) under the long-frozen desert of Mars, the researchers say this lake must have a lot of salts mixed in it.
It is very cold and saltiness would make it a very hard environment for any living thing. But the lead researcher, Professor Roberto Orosei from the Italian National Institute for Astrophysics, said it was not impossible for things to live there.
To search for life in this newly discovered lake, scientists will need to send a robot that’s able to make a hole through the mile of ice covering it. But at least the teams looking for life on Mars will now know where to start their search.

“It’s great,’’I said. Jenny nodded and continued looking while I moved about. touching the beautiful clothes. “I’ll try this on.” Jenny walked towards the dressing room. After a while, she came out in the outfit(一套衣服). She looked beautiful.
I sighed. Part of me wanted to say how good she looked. but another part stopped the words coming out. Jenny was in such good shape that she’d look good in the outfit. Sometimes. I regretted choosing a best friend who was so pretty. God, why can’t I be the one with the rich parents and the great look? More and more, I was envious(妒忌的)of her.
“Well, Teresa, what do you think?” Jenny asked more than once. “Do you like it?’’
The outfit looked great on her, but I lied, “Not really. I think you need something with more colors.’’
“You think so?" Jenny said doubtfully.
“Just believe me. We’ll find something better, "I told her, pushing her back into the dressing room. “You just can’t buy the first thing you see.” I did my best to get Jenny out of the store, away from that outfit. As we left, Jenny gave the sweater one last look.
Just down the mall, we passed a yogurt place. ‘‘My treat, ’’Jenny said, pulling out her wallet.
I could never say no to chocolate, so we got some and sat down at a table. As Jenny talked without stopping about a million things, I thought about my feelings toward her. Those feelings weren’t kind.
Sitting there,______Jenny was attractive(吸引人的)not just because of her good luck, but more because of her kindness. Treating me to chocolate was far from her only show of generosity. She also let me drive her car and borrow her clothes.
Finishing our chocolate, we headed for the next clothing store. ‘‘Look at that red sweater.’’ Jenny said as we passed the window. ‘‘It would be perfect for you. Soon maybe you’ll have enough by saving your babysitting money to buy something like that.”
A few minutes earlier, all I had heard was about saving my babysitting money. I had hated the fact that Jenny could ask her parents for anything, and they’d buy it for her. This time, though. Madison Blue Spring, Florida This naturally-formed spring (泉水) lives up to its name (名副其实): The water is blue and attractive. Now a state park, the 25-foot deep swimming hole lies inside a lovely forest next to the Withlacoochee River in northern Florida. If you are brave, you can even swim into the hole's underwater caves. | Santa Rosa Blue Hole, New Mexico Like an oasis (绿洲) in the desert, this swimming hole keeps a perfect temperature of 62 degrees. The water is so clear that you can see the bottom. It is because the water, which is connected to an underwater cave system (系统), renews itself every six hours. You can even jump in from the edge of the broken sinkhole (沉洞), which is off the famous highway Route 66. |
Switzer Falls, California You can get out of the city with a trip to the Bear Canyon area of Angeles National Forest near Los Angeles.
