As China’s influence grows, many students in the US are working hard to learn Chinese. Parents and education experts(专家)in the US think Chinese speakers may have greater chances.
The number of schools that teach Chinese has grown. Ten years ago, only about 300 schools in the US had Chinese lessons. Today, about 1, 600 schools teach Chinese.
Lomond Elementary School in Ohio is one of them. Each week, all students in grades one to five have a one-hour Chinese class. They learn the language through songs, games and lots of talking.
“We’re trying to make students interested in the language,” teacher James told Times for Kids. “We think it’s really important that all children receive these lessons,” he says. “We’d like to do even more.”
“Schools are looking to the future,” says Nancy, a US education expert. “China is becoming a really powerful country. Young people should not only know the language, but also understand the culture. Students may not be thinking about the future, but they think learning Chinese language and culture is fun.”
“We wish we could go to China one day,” said Karl and his classmate, Walt, from Miami.
More than 40 million foreigners around the world are studying Chinese. About 50,000 people in the US are learning the language. Chinese has become the second most spoken foreign language in the US after Spanish.

【推荐2】English is difficult to learn because it is so different from our mother tongue (母语). On the other hand, we haven’t got enough chances (机会) to hear English and speak English to foreigners (外国人).
So the first important thing for us to do, I think, is to practice (练习) speaking English more both in and out of class. In class, I listen to the teacher carefully and try my best to answer the teacher’s questions. After class, I listen to the tapes of the texts again and again until I can understand every word of it. I often retell (复述) the text in my own words. I always work hard at English and never give it up (放弃).
Of course this is not enough. In the evening, I do my homework carefully. When I find something interesting, I will write it down in English. At first, I couldn’t write well, but with the help of my teacher, I have made great progress.

Should household courses be compulsory (强制的) af school? Here are some people’s opinions.
By learning basic skills, children can learn how to take care of themselves and live independently. Parents won’t always be there to help their children with every problem. Children should master these important skills as early as possible. —Michael |
The household course should be compulsory at school. However, there are only limited (有限的) hours in a school day. I think it’s also something that parents need to do at home with their kids. Remember that school can’t teach your kids everything. They need you, too! —Jade |
Household courses should be optional (选修的) for students. They should choose whatever they like. If one likes cooking, he or she is welcome. But household courses shouldn’t be compulsory and forced on every student. —Ben |
Schools should have cooking classes. Children will be taught where the food comes from, how to use the cooking tools properly and how to cook. Many parents have no time to do this. A household class would provide the knowledge and training that parents aren’t able to give their children. —Linda |

Selecting is very important for your marks in America. So at the first term don’t select too many subjects, or you' ll feel very nervous and tired. Then you have to ask for some teaching plans. There is some information about subjects, timetables, marks and textbooks At the same time you must choose the teachers. Different teachers have different teaching methods (方法). If the teacher is called "killer" by the last grade, many students will give up choosing him, because this kind of teacher will leave too much homework, too many exams and give too low marks.
There is another thing after you select the subjects and the teachers How to buy textbooks makes each student feel hard. The textbooks in America are very expensive. Each one is about S 30-50. In order to save money, many students buy some used textbooks, and some students usually borrow textbooks from the school library.
In class, discussing is very important. The teacher encourages you to ask questions or show your own opinions. They don’t usually ask you to sit well. Instead, they allow you to sit or stand everywhere you like.

【推荐2】Falling asleep in class is still common among students. Why do students sometimes fall asleep in class?
A main reason is short of sleep. However, there are also reasons for getting too little sleep. Homework is necessary for most students, one that can take three to four hours every night. And a student who wants to be able to take part in any activity besides homework must stay up late. Club activities, sports, computer-game playing, and TV viewing, for example, all make students have less time for both homework and sleep.
Physical problems are another reason that can have students to fall asleep in class. For example, insomnia (失眠) may keep a student tired during class hours. It is a serious problem that may need medical attention.
The effects (影响) of falling asleep in class can be quite serious. First of all, sleeping in class is not a good way to endear (使……受喜爱) yourself to teachers. Secondly, it is highly possible that other students may make jokes about those who sleep in class. However, the worst effect of sleeping in class is missing important points. In the long run, sleepers may end up with failing classes.
Since students are probably not going to deal with the problem, falling asleep in class will probably go on. It will continue until more students find a way to balance (平衡) their personal and social lives with school and work, while still finding enough time to sleep.
1. _________ is necessary for most students.A.Homework | B.Club activities | C.Sports | D.Watching TV |
A.2 | B.3 | C.4 | D.5 |
