One day, a big wolf came and started saying, “This is my forest and I am bigger and stronger than you. So you will have to move out of the forest by tomorrow or I will destroy (摧毁) your house.”
Later that night Furry and his friends were thinking what to do. Furry suggested that they should build a trap (陷阱) to catch the wolf and teach him a lesson that there was somebody stronger than him. The beavers decided it would be a deep hole covered with sticks (树枝) on it.
One of the beavers asked, “How are we going to do that?” Furry suggested that they could ask the rabbits for help to build the trap. About one hour later the beavers went to the rabbits’ house and explained (解释) what was going to happen tomorrow morning.

He would miss the paycheck (薪金), but he really needed to retire. The boss was sorry to see his good worker go and asked if he could build just one more house as a personal favor. The carpenter agreed, but this time it was easy to see that his heart was not in his work. He used bad materials and worked carelessly. It was an unlucky way to end his career. When the man finished his work and the boss came to check the house, he handed the front door key to the carpenter. "This is your house," he said. "My gift to you." What a shame! If he had only known he was building his own house, he would have done it all so differently. Now he has to live in the home he had built sadly.
So it is with us. We build our lives in an absent-minded way, willing to do less than the best. At important points we do not give the job our best effort. Then with a shame, we fall into the situation we have created and find we are now living in the "house" we have built.

Can money buy happiness? Different people have different opinions toward money. Some people think money is the source of happiness. In their opinion, everything in the world can be bought with money. However, others think that money is the root of all evils. For example, some people fight against each other for money, some kill others for money. All these evils are under the control of money. In my opinion, money can bring us pain as well as happiness. Only when your money is made through your honest efforts, can you live a good life. If we use money to help the poor and homeless, we will enjoy the true happiness.
Jaspreet Sethi, New Delhi, India
Can money buy happiness? It certainly doesn’t make one sad. If it comes my way, I’ll be happy.
If I had money, I’d buy a bigger car, a bigger house, a better education for my child, and a better holiday for my family.
Adam Hassan, Abuja, Nigeria
I think money can buy happiness. If you have to pay school fees, you need money. If you need a home for yourself, you need money. If you want to buy yourself something to eat, you need money. So if you don’t have money to get these things, there won’t be happiness.
If I had money, I’d get myself a home, a very good car, and a wife.
Arseny Yatsechko, Moscow, Russia
Money can buy anything. If you have enough money, you can make yourself happy. Family can change, people can change, but money won’t change.
If I had money, I’d probably spend it on a trip. I’d go to Paris or Berlin. I’m not so worried about the economy.
Richard Wicks, London, United Kingdom
I’ve seen people with untold wealth. They never seemed happy to me. But what is happiness? You know, at the end of the day, as long as you’ve got your health and can get up, brush your teeth, get dressed in the morning, and talk to one another, you’re the richest person in the world.
Miguel Josue Molano, Bogotá, Colombia
You can have lots of money, but if you don’t have happiness in your heart, you won’t be able to share it.
If I suddenly found myself with lots of money, I would try to help people, because that’s the way to become happy. I’d help people try to achieve a different type of happiness.

In my opinion, schools should prepare us students for our future life. Life skills such as budget(预算) planning and saving money can stop us from overspending. It is also a good idea to learn cooking. This skill is the most helpful to you when you live by yourself.
On the other hand, some people think that there is no time for extra subjects at school and students should learn life skills only at home. As for me, I think we are learning many life skills while taking a traditional class. For example, we can learn teamwork by playing group games in a P. E. class, and doing our homework teaches us skills in time planning.
So I think all schools should teach life skills. It doesn’t need too much extra work, but it can help students well prepare for their college life and work after college.

Is this your idea of paradise (天堂) or would you prefer something different?
Nowadays, many of us try to live in a way that will harm the environment as little as possible. We recycle our newspapers and bottles, we take public transport to get to work. And we want to take these attitudes on holiday with us. This is why ecotourism(生态旅游) is becoming more popular all over the world.
Everyone has a different idea about ecotourism, but most people agree that ecotourism must: protect the wildlife and culture of the area; do no harm to the nature; offer an experience that tourists want to pay for.
So, for example, in a true ecotourism project, tourists stay in local(当地的) houses with local people, not in specially built hotels. They travel on foot, by boat, or bicycle so that there is no pollution. And they have a special experience that they will remember for the rest of their lives.
This type of tourism can only involve(涉及)a small number of people, so it can be expensive. And if you want to have an “eco” holiday wherever you go, remember these basic rules:
• Be prepared. Learn about the place that you’re going to visit. Find out about its culture and history. Think of your holiday as a chance to learn something.
• Have respect for the local culture. Wear clothes that will not annoy people. Always ask permission before you take a photograph. Remember that you are a visitor.
• Don’t waste resources. If the area doesn’t have much water, don’t take two showers every day.
• Stay in local hotels and eat in local restaurants.
But before you get too excited, think about how you are going to get to your dream “eco” paradise. Flying often causes air pollution. So don’t forget that you don’t have to fly to foreign places for your “eco” holiday. There are probably places of natural beauty in your own country that you’ve never visited.

When we set goals (目标), challenges are unavoidable. Perseverance allows us to deal with these hurdles rather than giving up. It helps us to learn from failures and use these lessons to improve our plans. This cycle of trying and improving can help us make great achievements.
Moreover, perseverance helps us grow personally. By sticking to our goals through good and bad times, we develop strength and decision. These not only help us reach our present goals but also prepare us to face challenges bravely in the future.
The value of perseverance is also seen in group efforts (努力). Teams that show perseverance are more likely to go through hard times together and become stronger. Members will encourage each other to keep going. And of course they will realize goals that once seemed out of reach.
Perseverance is about more than just reaching our goals. It’s about shaping ourselves. It shows us that success depends not only on talent or luck but also on the continuous effort and hard work. Born in 1992, Jiang’s world has been silent since she was 6 months old, when medicine she was given completely hurt her hearing. When she was a very young child, her parents began teaching her to read lips (嘴唇). They also taught her how to make sounds by putting her hands on their throats. When she was old enough, Jiang was accepted to a normal primary school, not a special school for the disabled. It was difficult at first. During lessons, teachers would often write on the blackboard with their backs to the students, so Jiang missed much what the teachers said. She had to copy down everything on the blackboard and study alone after class to keep up with her classmates.

She wanted to teach Chantek like teaching a human child. She and some other scientists taught him sign language (手语). Chantek learned at least 150 words in American sign language. The student cried in fear and said that Chantek wanted to hurt her. So people had to send him to an animal center. He spent 11 years there, living in a cage and becoming fat and unhappy.
In 1997, Chantek moved into Zoo Atlanta. There, he could finally go outside and jump from tree to tree. The zoo said Chantek often used sign language to “talk” with his caretakers (看护员). But he was too shy to do it with visitors.

If you come to visit, you’ll probably be surprised when you come in. Someone will give you an electronic PIN to wear. This PIN tells the house who and where you are. The house uses this information to give you what you need. When it’s dark outside, the PIN turns on the lights nearest you, and then turns them off as you walk away from them. Music moves with you too. If the house knows your favorite music, it plays it. The music seems to be everywhere, but in fact other people in the house hear different music or no music. If you get a telephone call, only the nearest telephone rings.
Of course, you are also able to tell the house if you want something. There is a home control console (控制台), a small machine that turns things on and off around you.
The PIN and the console are new ideas, but they are in fact like many things we have today. If you want to go to a movie, you need a ticket. If I give you my car keys, you can use my car. The car works for you because you have the keys. My house works for you because you wear the PIN or hold the console.
I believe that ten years later, most new homes will have the systems(系统)that I’ve put in my house. The systems will probably be even bigger and better than the ones I’ve put in today.
I like to try new ideas. I know that some of my ideas will work better than others. But I hope that one day I will stop thinking of these systems as new, and ask myself instead, “How did I live without them?”
