As a Chinese American student, I have much to say about the value differences between the two countries.

American kids love to make money by themselves.Chinese kids always ask for money from their parents. So American kids spend more than they have but Chinese kids spend less money, and they have money left in the bank.

American parents think going to an expensive but famous college is useless.Chinese parents would do anything to send their children to good colleges even if it means that they have to sell everything they own.

American girls always take part in sports, dancing and singing groups while Chinese girls always go to art or music groups. In these groups, American students think that B is a gift while Chinese students think that B is a death sentence(死刑).

American parents allow their daughters or sons to go out with their boyfriends or girlfriends as long as they come home at certain time.Chinese students aren’t allowed to do so in middle or high school.

American parents support and encourage their children at all times while Chinese parents think that criticism (批评)is best for children in the world. So American parents only look at their children’s good side.Chinese parents seem to only see their Children’s bad side.

I don’t want to say which culture is better because both cultures have their pros and cons.

【推荐1】In Western society, especially in the English-speaking world, the chance for young people to see the other countries and experience life is considered important. Many young people, when they finish school at the age of 18, take a gap year before they go to university.

Parents often want their children to grow up a little and see what the real world is like when they finish school. Although they are worried about their safety, many think that the advantages of independence and experience are worth the worries. Children are encouraged to be brave, independent and to explore the world on their own or with friends.

Young people also want to experience freedom and see what life is like on the other side. This other side could be the other side of the world or just the other side of life. For example, if they have a rich life, they may want to see how people in poor areas live.

A gap year after school is also an important chance for young people to spend time thinking about what they want to do with their lives. A little bit of growing up and experience will help them make their important career decisions, especially when they are unsure about what they want to study.

Another reason for going straight after school is to get a break from studying before they start the next few years of university. So anywhere you travel in the world, you will meet young European people exploring the world.

So much of the world has been travelled and explored. The young people are now looking for more worthy experiences. Some of them work as volunteers to do something for the country they are visiting. Many gap year volunteers are now spending a few months teaching English in Thailand, helping feed giant pandas in China or building a well(井) in a village in Africa.

These young people’s wish to explore the world is an expression of the values of the societies that they are part of. Both discovering the world and making a positive difference in it are important parts of the Western mind.

【推荐2】Many Chinese people will wonder what presents to get for their moms on Mother’s Day, but not many know Mother’s Day is actually a festival from overseas.

Mother’s Day originated(起源)in America during the early 20th century. The festival spread to China as early as the 1980s and was widely accepted.

Why did a foreign festival become popular in China? In fact, Chinese traditional culture has always encouraged filial(孝顺的)devotion to parents. There are many stories which show filial respect in ancient China. For example, the story of “Taste Liquid(液体的)Medicine for Mother” tells us the filial virtue(美德)of Emperor Wen of the Western Han dynasty. His mother had been sick for three years. He often stayed up by her bedside and cared for her day and night. He tasted the liquid medicine first before she drank it. Also, mother love is a repeated subject in Chinese ancient poems, like “Song of the Parting Son” by Meng Jiao, a poet of the Tang dynasty. Now this poem is still a must in the school textbooks. Children in China are brought up with the education of filial devotion.

On special days, people often use roses or forget-me-nots to express love. Carnations are considered as the perfect flowers for mothers around the world, but few know that China has its own for mothers—the tiger lily.

Love for mothers can have different ways of expression. What matters most is love, not the festival itself. What mothers truly want is perhaps just a simple expression of love from their children.

A.In the 1920s.B.In the 1980s.

A visitor can often get lost in Yucatan!
