Where do you usually use the mobile phone, at home, on the bus, or in the street while walking? Anyway, schools are certainly no longer a place to use it.
Recently, a rule on mobile phone use was passed in China. According to it, students had better not bring mobile phones to school. If they want, they need to get their parents’ and school’s permission (允许). What’s more, all phones must be kept by teachers during class time.
It’s said that the main purpose of the rule is to protect students’ eyesight (视力) and prevent them from getting lost in the Internet and video games.
In 2019, China had 175 million Internet users under the age of 18, with 74% having their own mobile phones, according to a report last year. The report found mobile phone users in this group used their phones mostly for online learning, listening to music and playing games.
It’s reported that teachers mustn’t ask students to finish homework on mobile phones. Schools should provide more public phones to help students get in touch with their parents.
Parents and teachers widely support the rule. In a survey on Weibo, 54% of 1,900 people said they believed it wasn’t necessary for school children to take mobile phones to schools. Over a quarter wanted a more flexible (灵活的) rule, with 20% saying students needed mobile phones at school.

Try to talk about everyday things with your parents. That doesn’t mean telling them everything. In fact, turn the focus onto them for a change: Ask about their day—just as they do with you.
Jim, 15, is a junior school student. One day, after he said that he was thinking of trying out for the school play, his mom kept asking about it for weeks. Instead of telling her how he felt, Jim decided it would be easier not to tell her anything he was doing in the future.
A good way to get parents to ask fewer questions is to offer some information on your own. This puts the communication in your hands. The more you tell them about everyday things, the less they will ask. Communicating everyday things has another advantage: It can show your parents that you are responsible enough to make good decisions. Though it won’t be easy, do not give up. The parents need time to get used to it as their kids become independent. To many parents, they believe their years of experience put them in a better position to make decisions. If you think your parents are like that, talk to them about it.

There is lots of junk(垃圾) in space .Some of it is from rockets. In 1996, a rocket broke into about 300,000 small pieces. So far, scientists have found over 10,000 man-made pieces flying around in space. Only 6-7%of them are satellites and space probes (探测器). Astronauts also lose small things while working in space. In 1965, during the first American spacewalk , astronaut Edward White lost a glove .For a month, the glove stayed in space, travelling at a speed of 28,000 kilometers per hour .It became the most dangerous piece of clothing for the Earth in history it flew away. But Aarrav didn’t create his smart spoon to win a prize. He saw his uncle, who has Parkinson’s disease (PD) (帕金森病), struggling to feed himself. Food kept falling out of his mouth, making him look like a mess. He wanted to make a change.
More than 7 million people in India have PD. The disease influences the brain, causing patients to shake uncontrollably. As the disease progresses, it leads to difficulty in eating by oneself.
Aarrav wanted his uncle to be able to eat by himself. This encouraged the teen to look for a way to help his uncle. So he took to his room with sensors (传感器), a 3D printer and other tools. But not everything went well.
“It was disappointing not to be able to find certain parts I needed in India. I had to buy some from abroad,” Aarrav said in an interview.
Aarrav made a first model, but the spoon handle was not easy for his uncle to hold. “I’ve improved the invention. It needs to be waterproof (防水的). The spoon must be easily separated, so that it can be cleaned and replaced with a fork. And the spoon needs to be deeper to hold more food,” the teen said.
The smart spoon is now being tested at a local college. The test is expected to be completed in early 2024. Aarrav hopes that his smart spoon will be used in hospitals soon.

Chinese students are thought to be hard workers who put great effort into their studies. How well do they perform on tests on a world level? The 2018 Program for International Student Assessment (PISA国际学生能力评估项目) found that 15-year-olds in Beijing, Shanghai, Jiangsu and Zhejiang ranked(排列) No 1 in reading, science and math. They got the highest rating(等级) — Level 4.
The PISA is carried out every three years by the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD). This year, it tested around 600,000 students in 79 countries and regions.
Students from Singapore came in second place in reading. Students from Macao ranked third in all three categories (类别). Students from the United States ranked Level 3 for reading and science and Level 2 for math.
Chinese mainland students first took part in the PISA in 2009, when students from Shanghai ranked on top. The city's students got the top spot again in 2012.
The PISA rankings have raised global(全球的) interest in Chinese teaching methods. The UK ranked 26th in math in the 2012 PISA. Teachers there are starting to use Chinese math-teaching methods. Around 5,000 of Britain's 16,000 primary schools have used the Shanghai math-teaching method, China Daily reported.
Britain translated math textbooks from Chinese schools and published them in 2017. Every year since 2014, groups of British and Chinese teachers have visited each other's schools to share teaching tips and discuss methods.
The new teaching methods have allowed younger students to learn basic knowledge in a more solid (坚实的) way that makes sure they understand more complex content (复杂的内容) when they are older, noted Carol Knights from Britain's National Centre for Excellence in the Teaching of Math.
Both China and the UK have benefited (获益) from each other. “We've benefited from working with Chinese partners due to(归咎于) the very high quality of lesson planning and teaching for memorization in China. Our Chinese partners have benefited from our methods of the development of character, focus on innovation (创新) and application (应用) of knowledge," Philip Avery, from the Bohunt Education Trust, said to China Daily.
