Ever feel sleepy when it’s time to get up for school? If you think school shouldn’t start so early, you’re not alone. Lots of scientists and doctors agree. That’s why some groups are pushing for later start times.
There’s good news for some students who like to snooze*. California passed a new law. It sets rules. High schools will start at 8:30 am or later. Middle schools will start at 8 am or later. So students might get more minutes of California dreaming.
Research shows that most adolescents need about nine hours of sleep a night. They usually get their best sleep between 11 pm and 8 am. So if students get up at 5 or 6 am, they miss some good sleeping time. Students who don’t get enough sleep can have health problems. They have trouble learning, too. It’s hard to learn when you’re nodding off at your desk!
But some people think starting schools later isn’t so smart. They argue there’s no way to be sure students will get more sleep. After all, the law can’t make students go to bed! And schools that start later finish later. That leaves students with less free time. Like what? Sports, jobs, chores, and homework. And let’s not forget fun!
Maybe another problem is buses! If all schools start near the same time, a district* has to pay for more buses and drivers. That’s one reason so many high schools start very early.
In fact, several schools outside California have a ready set later start times. Seattle Public Schools is an example. High schools there start no earlier than 8:45 am. A new law may soon be passed in Ohio. It would push back start times in that state.
How about you? Like to start school bright and early? Or would you rather snooze till the sun is high in the sky?

A study shows that it is more dangerous than doing that over driving. Researchers found that there are more people hurt for walking than driving. The survey shows that walking is not as easy as it is. It is a little difficult. We have to pay close attention to many things around as at the same time to walk safely in a straight line. The researchers said that people forget how to walk properly, so dangerous things always happen to them. They run into walls and other people. They walk into cars, fall over things in the street, and even fall into holes or downstairs. A researcher said walking is a difficult action. There two reasons why sending messages make walking dangerous. One is that people cannot see the street. The other is that their attention is always focused on their phones instead of their feet. Their minds are somewhere else instead of thinking about walking safely. It is said that more than 3,000 people visited the hospital last year because of sending messages with a phone. He said the worst cases are head hurting. When a walker fell into the air, he or she has nothing to protect the hand. The damage can be serious. So we’d better stay away from smart phones when driving.

According to a 2018 study from San Francisco State University, nearly 2. 4 billon people around the world used a smartphone in 2017. By the end of 2018, more than a third of the global population will be using a smartphone.
However, smartphone technology can be a double-edged sword (双刃剑). On the one hand, it sends us lots of information. On the other hand, using a smartphone may become an addiction (瘾).
Erik Peper and Richard Harvey are both health education professors at San Francisco State University. They led the study. Peper explains that smartphone addiction forms connections in the brain that are similar to drug addiction (毒瘾). And these connections form slowly over time. Also, addiction to social media may affect (影响) our emotional state (情绪). The two professors asked 135 university students about their habit of smartphone use and their feelings. They found that students who used their phones were feeling lonelier and more nervous.
Peper and Harvey don't blame (责怪) users for their technology addiction. The researchers warn that workers in the technology industry know how to control our brains and turn us into addicts.
But the researchers say that we can train our brains to be less addicted to our phones and computers. Erik Peper suggests turning off our phones before we sleep or do something important. The researchers also suggest taking control of when and where you answer texts or emails. You don't need to answer them all. And you certainly don't need to answer them as soon as you get them. They also suggest setting limits (设限) on the time you spend.

Ask a teacher or tutor about how to review your lessons, and exam skills—how to work when you are in an exam.
Take short rests during your time of work. If your mind is tired, it will not remember well.
Plan your work: study at times when you know you will work at your best.
Get enough sleep, and eat healthy food.
You need exercise to work well.
Stop thinking about the future and failing.
If you feel ill, talk to someone about your worries. But don’t be too relaxed! Some stress over exams makes you work hard for them.
If it upsets you to talk to your friends about an exam when it is finished, don’t do it! In fact, don’t even think about the exam you have finished. What is done is done.
To this advice, we could add:
If you are studying in the evening, don’t go straight to bed. Your mind will still be “going round and round”—thinking too much.

B.Do something else, maybe walk or get exercise. |
C.How to get through exams? |
D.You cannot change what you have written! |
E.Walk, run and play sport—whatever you enjoy. |

In fact, there are several reasons why school uniforms are a good idea. First of all, uniforms help the school look smart. The students feel that they belong to a particular (特别的)group. When every student in the school wears the uniform, nobody has to worry about fashion. Everybody wears the same style of clothes. Uniforms can be useful in unexpected ways. A school in Ireland has introduced an interesting new uniform. On the edge (边缘)of the jacket, there is a piece of cloth which gives off light in the dark. When the children are walking or cycling to school on dark mornings, car drivers can easily see them.
But can uniforms help improve school standards? The answer to this question is not clear. One study in America found that students5 grades improved a little after the school introduced uniforms. But some students didn't want to wear the uniform. Other American studies showed that uniforms have nothing to do with the school performance.
School uniforms are traditional in Britain, but some schools are starting to get rid of them. Students of some very good schools do not have to wear uniforms now. However, uniforms are still popular. Pupils at about 90 percent of British secondary schools wear uniforms.

【推荐2】In 2018, Science Magazine asked some young scientists what schools should teach students. Most said students should spend less time remembering facts and have more space for creative activities. As the Internet grows more powerful, students can get knowledge easily. Why should they be required to carry so much of it around in their heads?
Civilizations (文明) develop through forgetting life skills that were once necessary. In the Agricultural Age, a farmer could afford to forget hunting skills. When societies industrialized, the knowledge of farming could be safe to forget. Nowadays, smart machines help us to get most human knowledge. It seems that we no longer need to remember most things. Does it matter?
Researchers have realized several problems that may happen. For one, human beings have biases (偏见), and smart machines are likely to increase our biases. Many people believe smart machines are necessarily correct and objective (客观的), but machines are trained through a repeated testing and scoring process (过程). In the process, human beings still decide on the correct answers.
Another problem relates to the ease (容易) of getting information. When there were no computers, efforts were required to get knowledge from other people, or go to the library. We know what knowledge lies in other brains or books, and what lies in our heads. But today, the Internet gives us the information we need quickly. This can lead to the mistaken belief—the knowledge we found was part of what we knew all along.
In a new civilization rich in machine intelligence (智慧), we can easily get to smart memory networks where information is stored. But dependency on a network suggests possibilities of being harmed easily. The collapse of any of the networks of relations our health depends upon, such as food and energy, would produce terrible results. Without food we get hungry; without energy we feel cold. And it is through widespread loss of memory that civilizations are at risk of falling into a dark age.
We forget old ways to free up time and space for new skills. As long as the older forms of knowledge are stored somewhere in our networks, and can be found when we need them, perhaps they’re not really forgotten. Still, as time goes on, we slowly but unquestionably become strangers to future people.

B.prevents civilizations from being lost at a high speed |
C.misleads us into thinking we already knew the knowledge |
D.separates the facts we have from those in the smart machines |
A.a sudden failure | B.the basic rule | C.an unhappy start | D.the slow development |
A.question about the standards of information storage |
B.discuss our problems of communication with machines |
C.stress the importance of improving our remembering ability |

If you’ve always wanted to be a high flier, then skydiving is the right sport for you! Skydiving is the activity of jumping from a plane or other aircrafts at about 4000m and falling through the sky before opening a parachute.
The actual history of skydiving started with Frenchman Andre-Jacques Garnerin, who made successful parachute jumps in 1797 from a hot air balloon. Later, more people took it up and had regular competitions, which led to it becoming an international sport in 1952. For some people, skydiving has become a sport they enjoy doing for a lifetime through which they meet new friends, learn, progress and even compete.
The sport of skydiving has a whole range of training methods. Tandem skydiving is the most common way for beginners to get started in this exciting sport. During a tandem dive, the student is connected to an instructor. The student is able to enjoy the sensation of free fall, while the instructor takes control of vital activities such as opening the parachute and performing a safe landing. While falling through the sky, the “arch” position is the best body position for beginners. The shape of a banana is similar to the body position. To feel the sensation of the “arch”, you can lie face down on the ground and extend your arms out while keeping them off the ground. Do the same thing with your legs — legs extended with knee bend and keeping them off the floor. This “arch” position allows for a smooth free fall.
Today, skydiving has become a popular activity around the world. Why not take the chance to skydive in your coming vacation?
