One night, he saw fireflies (萤火虫) outside his house and came up with an idea. He caught some fireflies in a cloth bag and hung the bag up as a lamp. It was said that he spent all of his summer nights reading like this.
Another child named Sun Kang also loved reading during the same time period. One night during winter, Sun used up all of his lamp oil and couldn’t study at night. When he suddenly woke up at midnight, he saw the thick snow reflecting the moonlight outside his house. His first thought was “Oh, I can use the reflected light to read!” He took out his books and read, even though he was freezing cold.
Both of these kids later became successful government officials. People were touched by their hard-working spirit and their stories inspired (启发) the Chinese idiom nangyingyingxue (囊萤映雪) or “to read by the light of bagged fireflies or the reflected light of snow”.

For poor families, paper and writing brushes were often too expensive to afford. Students even had to travel over mountains and rivers in order to find a good teacher. However, these tough conditions did not stop young minds from pursuing (追求) knowledge.
Xie Cun, a professor from Peking University said, “All of these stories inspire people to study hard although there are many difficulties. We can also learn from these stories. One day a tall man with a scar (疤痕) on his face arrived. He opened the door of the inn, singing the song I know so well:
“Fifteen men on the dead man’s chest-Yo-ho-ho, and a bottle of rum!”
“A glass of rum,” he said when he came inside.
“This is a pleasant inn,” he said, “Do you have many customers (顾客)?”
“Not many,” my father answered.
“Well, this is the place for me. You can call me ‘captain’.” he said. The he asked a man to carry his large sailor’s chest to his room. “I’m a simple man,” he told my father, “Rum and bacon and eggs is all I want. Here are four gold coins to start. Tell me when I have to pay more.”

“If you see a sailor with one leg, tell me as soon as he arrives.”

One Sunday, when I was reading a newspaper, a special picture touched me. It gave the clothing sizes of each family member. I thought that this would be a good chance to teach my children to help those who were less lucky than themselves. I said to my seven-year-old twins, Brad and Bret, and three-year-old Meghan, “We have so much, and these poor people now have nothing. We’ll share what we have with them.”
I filled a box with foods and clothes. While I was doing this, I encouraged the boys to choose their toys and donate some of their less favorite things. Meghan watched quietly as the boys took out their old toys and games and put them together. Then she walked away. A few minutes later, she came back with Lucy, her much-loved doll. She put the doll on top of the other toys. “Oh, dear,” I said. “You don’t have to give Lucy. You love her so much.” Meghan said, “Lucy makes me happy, Mommy. Maybe she’ll make another little girl happy, too.”
I looked at Meghan for a long moment. She taught me a lesson. It’s easy to give something that we don’t want any more, but hard to give what we cherish(珍爱), isn’t it?

Every summer, when the first watermelons arrived, Bernie would call. Dad and I would go to Bernie’s place. We’d sit on the edge of the dock (码头), feet shaking, and got ready for a big meal.
Bernie would take his knife, cut our first watermelon, hand us both a big piece and sit down next to us. Then we’d put our faces in the watermelon, eating only the heart—the reddest, juiciest, sweetest part and throw away the rest.
Bernie was my father’s idea of a rich man. I always thought it was because he was such a successful businessman. Years later, I realized that it was not Bernie’s wealth (财富) itself but his way of dealing with it that my father liked. Bernie knew how to stop working, get together with friends and eat only the heart of the watermelon.
What I learned from Bernie is that being rich is a state of mind. Some of us, no matter how much money we have, will never be free enough to eat only the heart of the watermelon. If you don’t take the time to hang your feet over the dock and enjoy life’s small pleasure, your work is probably hurting your life.
For many years, I forgot that lesson I’d learned as a kid on the loading dock. I was too busy making all the money I could.
Well, I’ve learned it again. I hope I have time left to enjoy the success and to take pleasure in the day. That’s the heart of the watermelon. I have learned again to throw the rest away.
