Students have many after-school activities to do at school, such as sports games, dance groups, swimming and rock-climbing. On weekends, they have enough time to do what they like. Most students like to listen to pop music. Hollywood films, Hong Kong and Singapore films are very popular, too. Some of them also spend free time surfing the Internet, e-mailing their friends, playing computer games. They sometimes go to cafes, fast food restaurants, shopping centers and big bookstores. They also join in community service(社区服务).

At 14 or 15, you can work part-time after school or on weekends, and during summer you can work 40 hours each week. Does all that mean that if you are younger than 14, you can’t earn(赚) your own money? Of course not! Kids who are between the ages of 10 and 13 can earn money by doing lots of things.
Valerie, 11, told us that she made money by cleaning up other people’s yards. Lena, 13, makes money by knitting(织) dog sweaters and selling them to her neighbors, and Reisa said she had started taking art classes and showing her work to people. People have asked her to draw pictures for them and they pay her for them. Jasmine, 13, writes articles for different magazines!
Earning is learning. By working to earn your own money, you are learning the skills you will need to succeed in life. These skills can include things like getting along with others, using technology(技术) and using your time. Some people think that asking for money is a lot easier than earning it. However, when you make your own money, you don’t have to depend on someone else. The five dollars that you earn will probably make you feel a lot better in your hand than the twenty dollars you ask for.

The teacher drew a big circle on the blackboard, and sixty children copied it on their paper. The teacher drew a small one on the top of the big one and then put two small triangles (三角形)on the top of it. The children drew in the same way. The lesson went on until there were sixty-one cats in the classroom. Each student’s cat looked exactly the same as that on the blackboard.
The visiting teacher watched the lesson and was surprised because the teacher methods were different from those in her country. A children’s art lesson in her country produced a lot of pictures, and each one is quite different from the others. Why? What makes this difference in educational methods? In a classroom in any country, a teacher teaches more than art or history or language.
In a country such as the United States or Canada, students are asked to work and find answers by themselves. The students are helped to learn to have their own ideas. In countries such as China and Japan, students often work together and help each other in the classroom, but the teachers teach, and the students listen. The students are asked to memorize a lot. They have to learn the same textbook, do the same homework and give the same answers.

The research also says that children are under great pressure(压力) from schools and parents. Children in England must work hard at school. And they have to go to many clubs and classes after school. They can’t go home until(直到) very late. After dinner, they have to do their homework. Some children usually spend over two hours in front of computers doing their homework.
Some teachers think children should have more free time, so they can do something they like. “Learning is not just in the classroom. If children are interested in something, they can learn a lot from it out of the classroom,” a parent says. “So free time is also important to children.”

On the day before the bass season opened, he and his father were fishing early in the evening, catching sunfish and perch(鲈鱼)with worms. Then he tied on a small silver lure(鱼饵)and practiced casting. The lure struck the water and caused colored ripples in the sunset, then silver ripples as the moon rose over the lake.
When his pole doubled over, he knew something huge was on the other end. Finally, he very gingerly lifted the exhausted fish from the water. It was the largest one he had ever seen, but it was a perch . The boy and his father looked at the handsome fish. Then the father lit a match(火柴) and looked at his watch. It was 10 P.M.--- two hours before the season opened. He looked at the fish, then at the boy.
"You'll have to put it back, son," he said.
"Dad!" cried the boy.
"There will be other fish," said his father.
"Not as big as this one," cried the boy.
He looked around the lake. No other fishermen or boats were anywhere around in the moonlight. He looked again at his father. Even though no one had seen them, nor could anyone ever know what time he caught the fish, the boy could know everything by his father's clear voice that the decision could not be changed. He slowly worked the hook(钩) out of the lip of the huge bass and lowered it into the black water.
The creature swished its powerful body and disappeared. The boy suspected that he would never again see such a great fish.
That was 34 years ago. Today, the boy is a successful architect in New York City. His father's cabin is still there on the island in the middle of the lake. He takes his own son and daughters fishing from the same dock.
He was right. He has never again caught such a magnificent fish as the one he landed that night long ago. But he does see that same fish---again and again---every time he comes up against a question of ethics(道德规范).

15 years ago, I was the founder(创立者)of One Warm Coat. One day when I listened to a radio interview, I heard a story: a woman from a far place carried ten winter coats to give them away at the One Warm Coat drop-off place. Having known there were many homeless people in the city, she thought her coats may make a difference between cold and comfort(舒适)for ten people that winter. She said it was so tiring for an old woman to travel so far. But if it could help even one person, it was great worth it.
Her words made me moved. Then I realized if there were more drop-off places, more people would be able to give their things away. So I started my plan of setting up more drop-off places. One Warm Coat is developing quickly and it gets over 4 million coats across the country every year. As the founder, I always feel proud and satisfied.
Everyone can have an influence on others. Even if you have nothing, at least you have your own ideas and thoughts. As long as you share them and make them real, they may go on influencing others in a way you even don’t know.

Mr. Bryant, who was 41, played for the Los Angeles Lakers for 20 years, joining the team at age 17, straight out of high school.
During his time with Lakers, Mr. Bryant led the team to five national championships. The team won three in a row in 2000, 2001, and 2002, and came back to win the NBA title again in 2009 and 2010.
Mr. Bryant spent his early school years in Italy, where his father was a professional basketball player. Mr. Bryant spoke both Italian and Spanish. His family moved back to the US when Mr. Bryant was in high school, where his performance on the court(球场) caused excitement and got attention. He played and practiced hard, with the goal of becoming even better than his boyhood hero, Michael Jordan.
Mr. Bryant helped lead the US Olympic team to win gold in 2008 and 2012.
In 2016, Mr. Bryant retired(退休), following a string of injuries. During his time with the Lakers, Mr. Bryant had worn the numbers 8 and 24. When he retired, the Lakers said those numbers wouldn’t be used again.
After he retired, Mr. Bryant focused on his family — his wife Vanessa, and their four daughters.
He took up new activities, too. He started a company that produced books and movies. In 2018, Mr. Bryant’s short animated film(动画电影) “Dear Basketball” won an Oscar — an important movie award.
Mr. Bryant also set up basketball camps and programs for kids, to help share his love of the game. Mr. Bryant coached the team of his 13-year-old daughter Gianna. They were on their way to one of her games when the helicopter crashed.
Worldwide, Mr. Bryant’s death has caused great sadness. Some NBA players held onto the ball for 24 seconds as games started on the same Sunday. Doing that meant that their team lost the ball, but the players were doing it out of respect for Mr. Bryant, who had worn the number 24.

That way, after my teacher edits(编辑) my work, I can go back and make revisions without having to rewrite the whole thing. And Microsoft Word has a spell check! I use it all the time.
For English class, we're reading The Outsiders, by S. E. Hinton. As a pre-reading task, my teacher asked us to research teenage groups on the Internet. I tried Google, Encarta, and Yahoo first, and finally found an article on Time. com.
For a geography task on the United States, I used Encarta to learn about the Mississippi River. I needed to find out how deep the river is, how its widths and depths are different, what states it runs through, and what kind of fish live in it. I used the information to show how the geography of a country influences its economy (经济). For example, the river's trade paths, the number of fish caught in it, and the tourists it attracts directly influence Southerners' jobs and incomes(收入).
I never go to the library to do research. It takes too much time. Since I live in New York City and both my parents work, getting to the library isn't always easy. For a big assignment or research project, I used to stay at the library to read, or sign out whatever books or magazine I needed. Now being able to find the information in my own living room makes everything a lot simpler. Online dictionaries and encyclopedias (百科全书) also save time.
Sometimes, I think the computer spoils young people because its so easy---at least physically. But computer's are not like television, which does the thinking for you. You still have to use your mind. I prefer using a computer. Easy, fun, and fast.

But during the summer, the barn is filled with city kids who have come to enjoy the farm.
They're members of the Fayette County Livestock Club. In this club, children learn many skills, such as cutting wool and taking care of animals.
"A lot of Lexington kids don't know anything about farm life," said Adria Meier,17, who has looked after goats(山羊)and sheep for three years. "There is so much to learn. "
Children who take care of their goats and sheep at the little red barn must take a six-hour class before they get an animal of their own. They pay for their own animals but get special club programs for free, such as one that provides animal care.
Mahan lets the group use the barn for free. The kids spend up to three hours a day there during the summer.
There are valuable lessons learned along the way. For instance, don't cut the wool off your goats and sheep when there is wind. Sheep are social animals and they will cry loudly when they are separated.
"Looking after animals helps teach us responsibility. Unlike learning to swim or play soccer, caring for an animal isn't something you can simply abandon(遗弃),"said Carly Playforth.
