“For ten weeks, 110 people aged from 18 to 71 were tested to see the relationship between the number of lies they told and their health,” said Anita Kelly, a professor at the University of Notre Dame in Indiana. “When they lied more, their health declined,” said Kelly.
Researchers divided the people into two groups. Group A was told to avoid telling any lie for any reason to anyone. They may omit (忽略) the truth, refuse to answer questions, and keep secrets, but they can’t say anything that they know are not true. Group B was not told anything like this.
Over the study period, when people in Group A told fewer lies in a week than they did in other weeks, they experienced fewer health problems such as sore throats and headaches. Professor Linda Stroh said, “When you find that you don’t lie, you have less stress (压力).” The results of past research show that each American tells about 11 lies a week. In both groups, when people lied less during a week, they reported better physical and mental health during that period.
“It’s certainly a good thing to have people be more honest,” said Robert Feldman of the University of Massachusetts. “It may improve our mental health, but I don’t think it can improve our physical health.”

One such speaking style is known as “parentese”. Research has shown that babies react better to this kind of language in the first months of life. Generally, “parentese” requires adults to speak in a higher voice and at a slower speed. The language is made easier to understand, while sentences are short and often repeated.
Can parents be taught good ways to improve their “parentese” skills? Patricia Kuhl, a professor of speech and hearing sciences, carried out a study on it. She says the purpose of the study was to find out whether a parent can be “trained” to create their own speaking style to improve language learning in children.
Naja Ferjan Ramirez helped lead the study. “Most parents know that the amount (数量) of language their child hears is important,” Ferjan Ramirez said. “What we shared with them through training is that how they talk to their baby may matter even more. ”
For the study, parents were given a small recording device (设备), which they put inside a piece of their baby’s clothing. All spoken communication from parents and the child was recorded. The recordings were made at three different periods of the child’s life: when the child was six, ten and fourteen months old. The parents were divided into two groups: a control group and an intervention (干预) group. Those in the intervention group received training after their six and ten month recordings.
The study found that between the ages of six and fourteen months, trained parents increased the amount of speech directed to the child and their use of “parentese” by l5 percent. Parents in the control group showed less growth in those areas, about 7 percent.

Jane’s mother worked on the farm from morning to evening which just could make ends meet. To allow Jane to live a happy life, Mother was very careful about spending money. However, Jane didn’t understand her. Every day Mother was busy with her work while Jane was studying at school, so they had little time to enjoy themselves.
One day, Mother realized Jane was unhappy and even unfriendly to her, so she decided to go skiing with Jane to make Jane happy.

In 1995 Ma was working for US trading company, when he was introduced to the Internet. “I knew nothing about personal computers. I had never touched a keyboard before,” he said. He searched the word “beer” and saw that nothing came up about Chinese products.
Ma had an idea. Why not build a large Internet market to connect consumers(消费者) and companies from all over the world? That way they could do business online.
That is how Alibaba began. His company grew quickly. But that doesn’ t mean everything went smoothly for Ma. Alibaba had a difficult time in 2000, when many Internet companies failed. He was successful because he managed to attract investment into his company.
But there is a deeper reason.
It is Ma’s attitude. “You deserve(值得) to live your dream,” he said. “Everyone thought I was daydreaming when I started. But the most important thing is that we believed in our dream from day one, to today and tomorrow. Of course we made many mistakes, but we never gave up hope.”
Besides the determination(决心), Ma is also smart. For him, success in business is like trying to catch a rabbit. “If there are nine rabbits, focus on catching one—don’t try and catch them all,” he said. “Change your ways if you need to, but don’t change the rabbit. Now, the old man had seventeen camels, and the three brothers didn’t know how to do as their father said. They thought a long time about the problem, and it seemed that they must either kill some of the camels and cut them into pieces, or disobey their father. At last they went to their father’s old friend and asked for his advice. As soon as he heard their story, he said, "I will help you. I was a good friend of your father’s. I am old. I have only one camel, but take it-it is yours."
The three sons thanked the old man and took his camel. Now they found it was easy to do as their father wished, The oldest took half- that was nine camels; the second took one-third, that was six; and the youngest took one-ninth, that was two.

With a 3D printer, a cook can print complicated chocolate sculptures and beautiful pieces for decoration on a wedding cake. Not everybody can do that-it takes years of experience, but a printer makes it easy. A restaurant in Spain uses a Foodini to "re-create forms and pieces" of food that are "exactly the same," freeing cooks to complete other tasks. In another restaurant, all of the dishes and desserts it serves are 3D-printed, rather than farm to table.
Sustainability(可持续性)
The global population is expected to grow to 9.6 billion by 2050,and some analysts estimate that food production will need to be raised by 50 percent to maintain current levels. Sustainability is becoming a necessity. 3D food printing could probably contribute to the solution. Some experts believe printers could use hydrocolloids(水解胶体) from plentiful renewables like algae(藻类)and grass to replace the familiar ingredients(烹饪原料). 3D printing can reduce fuel use and emissions. Grocery stores of the future might stock "food" that lasts years in a row, reducing transportation and storage requirements.
Nutrition
Future 3D food printers could make processed food healthier. Hod Lipson, a professor at Columbia University, said, "Food printing could allow consumers to print food with customized nutritional content, like vitamins. So instead of eating a piece of yesterday’s bread from the supermarket, you'd eat something baked just for you on demand.”
Challenges
Despite recent advancements in 3D food printing, the industry has many challenges to overcome. Currently most ingredients must be changed to a paste(糊状物)before a printer can use them, and the printing process quite time-consuming, because ingredients interact with each other in very complex ways. On top of that, most the 3D food printers now are restricted to dry ingredients, because meat and milk products may easily go bad. Some experts are skeptical about 3D food printers, believing they are better suited for fast food restaurants than homes and high-end restaurants.

My friend had also seen it. He grew up living in a small village in a forest, and the moon meant a lot to him then. It had touched (感动) much of his life.
I know the feeling. Last December I went to a village with some friends. We stayed in a forest house with no electricity or hot water. Our group had campfires outside every night. The moon grew to its fullest during our trip. Between me and the high mountains lay three or four valleys. Not a light shone in them and not a sound could be heard. It was one of the quietest places I have ever known. And above me was the full moon, which struck (击打) me deeply.
Today our lives are filled with glass, metal, plastic and fibre-glass. We have televisions, cell phones, pagers, electricity, heaters and ovens and air-conditioners, cars, computers.
Struggling through traffic that evening at the end of a tiring day, most of it spent indoors, I thought: before long, I would like to live in a small cottage (村舍). There I will grow vegetables and read books and walk in the mountains. I may become an old man there, and wear the bottoms of my trousers rolled and measure out my life in coffee spoons. But I will be able to walk outside on a cold silent night and touch the moon.
