【推荐1】The reason of success
A professor told his students to go into the city slum (贫民窟) to study the life of 200 boys. He asked them to write reports about each boy’s life and future. Every one of the students wrote, “He doesn’t have any hope.”
Twenty-five years later, another professor read about the earlier study. He told his students to find out what had happened to these boys. Of the 200 boys, 20 had moved away or died. Nobody knew what had happened to them. They tried very hard and found the other 180 people. Among them 176 had become successful as doctors, teachers, and scientists.
The professor was very surprised and decided to study it further. Luckily, all the men were living near the place and he was able to ask each one, “What made you successful?” Each one answered with feeling, “There was a teacher.”
The teacher was still living there, so the professor found her and asked the old woman what she had used to pull those out of the slums, and change them into ________ people.

Where else can you play with your friends, do science experiments, read great books and write stories all in one day?

Many countries celebrate World Book Day. On that day, millions of school children can buy books at a much lower price than usual in any bookstore in England. It has been done every year since 1998. World Book Day is also celebrated in China. WenJiabao, the former Premier of China, is an avid reader. 67.虽然他很忙但是他每天都会大量阅读。 On World Book Day 2009, he called on people to do more reading. Wen suggested that young people should spend more time reading. “Books cannot change the world, but people can change the world by changing themselves through reading,” he said.
68.Reading helps us become more knowledgeable and smarter. Reading helps us to follow the latest developments of science and technology. Reading gives us information about other cultures and places in the world. 69.阅读也是学习一门外语的最重要的方式之一。We all know that it is difficult to learn everything in the classroom, for example, the ways English people are living and working today can be learnt by reading.Books, magazines, newspapers and other kinds of reading materials can help us to know more about the outside world.70.So, it is necessary for us to spend time reading every day.

【推荐1】Your education, your future
No matter what you want to do with your life, you’ll need an education first. You make your own future. You want to be a doctor, a teacher, or a police officer? A good education is required for every single one of those careers (职业). And what you’re learning in school today will decide whether your country can meet the greatest challenge in the future.
The truth is, being successful is hard. Some of the most successful people in the world are the ones who’ve had the most failures (失败). For example, the first book of J.K. Rowling, the writer of Harry Potter, was refused 12 times before it was finally published (出版). Michael Jordan was once kicked off his high school basketball team. He lost hundreds of games and thousands of shots during his career. But he said, “I have failed over and over again in my life. But that’s why I succeed.” These people succeeded because they understood that they couldn’t let their failures define (定义) themselves but to teach themselves. So if you get a bad grade, that doesn’t mean you’re stupid. Instead, you need to spend more time studying.
I expect you to put your best effort into everything you do. So don’t let us down, don’t let your family or country down. Most importantly, don’t let yourself down.
1. How many careers are mentioned in Paragraph 1?2. Who wrote Harry Potter?
3. What sport did Michael Jordan play?
4. Why did the famous people succeed?
5. What is the writer’s most important suggestion?
In our daily life many people always have negative (消极的) thoughts. Being in a negative space is harmful to our life and study. If you keep them in mind, you will lose hope sooner or later. Let’s drive away some of the most common negative thoughts.
No one cares about me.
Sometimes you say that your family and friends don’t care about you. Maybe you’re being too negative and misunderstand the gestures of love they show you. They don’t even have to be big gestures, but there are many countless little things they do for you. Maybe you just pay no attention to them and take them for granted. Perhaps you think they don’t care about you so you don’t make any effort in your relationships. Start showing people you care, so they can show you back in the same way. And if you don’t have good relationships with the people you know, what’s stopping you from making new friends?
Why is she better off?
Comparing yourself to someone else is never positive. There’s always going to be someone who is younger, prettier, smarter, or richer than you. If you keep admiring what someone else has, then this may cause you to lose the balance in your mind, which will open a whole other negative can of worms. Remember, what they don’t have is your whole package. Be proud of what you have, because if you want to play the comparison game, remember that there are people who are also worse off than you are.
I’ll never reach my goal.
If you think you’re not going to be able to “get there”, think again. There are many people who are worse off and have overcome more difficulty than what you are facing.
Everything will not beyond your reach if you work hard and have a positive attitude.

【推荐3】Giving generously (慷慨地) and receiving gratefully make it easier to live happily with others.
So why is it hard for some people to do?
Let me start with the idea of giving generously. I think people are reluctant (不情愿的) to be generous with others because they fear being used.
For example, my husband and I have family members who only contact us when they need money. We usually accept their requests (要求), but we rarely receive a “thank you”. Most people would say that my husband and I are being used, and I supposed we are. But when we give, we shouldn’t be giving for the purpose of getting praise. Rather, we should be giving because it’s a good thing to do. A “thank you” is merely the icing on the cake.
Everything that we have, from our ability to wake up each morning to the money in our bank account, is a gift. In return, the world asks us to use these gifts to help others, either by giving them our time or our resources. The good news is that when we live our lives being nice to others, our lives run more smoothly.
And at the same time, we should remember to receive gratefully. I truly believe that you cannot say “thank you” enough.
So often we get lazy about expressing gratitude. Parents can feel unappreciated by their children, and teachers can feel unappreciated by their students. Just because a task is part of someone’s job doesn’t mean that you shouldn’t thank them for it. Words of appreciation make others feel good about themselves like nothing else.
It’s good for us to say “thank you”because we regularly need to remind ourselves of how lucky we are. And hearing those two words can make us feel great for days. If you are looking for a secret solution to improve your life, I can give you one: Give generously and receive gratefully.
1. Why might people not want to be generous toward others?2. What does the underlined phrase “the icing on the cake” probably refer to?
3. What’s the writer’s opinion about helping others, according to Paragraph 4?
4. According to the writer, what will happen if we choose to be nice to others?
5. What’s the passage mainly about?

Now when I laugh, I show at least eight teeth. That shows how I am feeling. I start to be polite(礼貌的)to people around me.
I had another problem in the past. I cared about my look very much. I spent much time in front of the mirror(镜子)every day deciding what my hair should look like, while all my dirty clothes were on the floor of my bedroom.
Now I learn that one's look isn't so important. True beauty(美)should be inside our hearts.
I believe most teenagers have some problems, but I also believe if we deal with(应对)them in a right way, the problems will become important lessons, and they will help us have a better future.

First, a company called Lava Mae came up with the idea of mobile showers (移动淋器) for the homeless. Now, two young Australian men have created a similar laundry service (洗衣服务), called Orange Sky, for the homeless.
Lucas and Nicholas have been volunteering at the city’s charities for several years. They came up with the idea in July, 2017. They noticed that when the organizations handed out free clothes, many homeless people took more than they needed and threw them over the next few weeks.
Then they realized that it was simply because the clothes were dirty. Though there are two places in the city that provide a free washing service, one is open only three days a week, while the other is always booked up. On the other hand, most homeless people don’t have any money to wash their clothes at a laundry. So a mobile laundry seemed to be the perfect idea.
Setting it all up was not easy. The first challenge they faced was figuring out how to fit two washing machines into the old van (厢式送货车) they bought for their mobile laundry. Their bigger challenge was getting the city to consider them as a charity. Finally, by October 2017, Orange Sky Laundry was open!
Now they offer their services at six locations. In the last four months, Lucas and Nicholas have not only been able to help homeless people, but also attracted 120 volunteers. With their support, the young men hope to set up similar services in fifteen Australian cities by the end of 2018.
Why did they choose the name, “Orange Sky”? Because orange is their favorite color and also the title of their favorite song.
1. Was the laundry service called Orange Sky?2. What was the first challenge that Lucas and Nicholas had to face?
3. What is the main idea of this passage?
4. Will you help the homeless like the two young men in the future? Why or why not?
Dear mum and dad,
I’m writing this letter to you from the center of Australia. At the moment we’re staying near Uluru—that’s the aboriginal(土著) name for Ayers Rock. On the first day, we took a balloon tour over the rock, and I was surprised at how big it was: 3.6 kilometers long and 384 meters high. The colors of the rock are fantastic, and at different times of the day, they change from purple to red. The Aborigines are the first people of Australia, and the ancient aboriginal stories describe the spirits that created the world. Uluru is a center of Aboriginal culture.
The Australians have many British relatives. That’s why they’re like us in many ways. Their family life is similar to ours, and they enjoy the same food and hobbies. The food and drink that most Australians like are grapes, lamb, ham and especially wine that they make in the south of the country. They love all sports, but football is the most popular. Most Australians live near the coast, so they also love going to the beach, swimming and surfing.
Although it’s December, it’s summer over here. The sunshine is very bright, and near the coast the countryside is very green. There are lots of sheep in the fields and on the hills, but the outback(澳洲内陆) is more like a desert, full of rocks and sand.
The next day after we arrived at Uluru, we went on a camel(骆驼) ride. The camel that I rode had a bad temper. When I sat on its back, it became very angry and refused me. So everyone else thought it was very funny that my camel kept lying down…
Finally, later this evening, we’re taking the plane back to Sydney and coming home, it’s been a fantastic trip!
Tony
