The reason of success
A professor told his students to go into the city slum (贫民窟) to study the life of 200 boys. He asked them to write reports about each boy’s life and future. Every one of the students wrote, “He doesn’t have any hope.”
Twenty-five years later, another professor read about the earlier study. He told his students to find out what had happened to these boys. Of the 200 boys, 20 had moved away or died. Nobody knew what had happened to them. They tried very hard and found the other 180 people. Among them 176 had become successful as doctors, teachers, and scientists.
The professor was very surprised and decided to study it further. Luckily, all the men were living near the place and he was able to ask each one, “What made you successful?” Each one answered with feeling, “There was a teacher.”
The teacher was still living there, so the professor found her and asked the old woman what she had used to pull those out of the slums, and change them into ________ people.
The teacher's eyes began to shine and she said with a sweet smile, “It's really very easy. I loved the boys.”

There are some very good things about open education. This way of teaching allows the students to develop their interests in many subjects. Open education asks students to be strict with their own education. The open classroom may help them to enjoy learning. Some students will be happier in an open education school. They will not have to worry about grades or rules.
But many students may not do well in open education. They will not make good use of open education. Because open education is so different from traditional education, these students may have a problem of getting used to making so many choices. The last point about open education is that some teachers do not like it. They do not believe in open education.
I think that open education is only a good idea. It may not work very well in a real class or school. I believe that most students want and need to have some rules. They have to study some subjects. Many students are pleased to find the subjects that they have to study so interesting. They will not study those subjects if they do not have to in an open education school.

【推荐2】The arrival of ChatGPT will push educators to think more about teaching subjects that technology is not good at. The future is not about technology fighting against humans, it is about humans living together with technology. ChatGPT pushes us to think harder of what makes us human.
What is very clear is that the kinds of things that are easy to teach and test have also become easy for ChatGPT. The world no longer accepts you just for what you know. The world accepts you for what you can do with what you know, and ChatGPT pushes us to work harder on this. If students are only as smart as a smartphone, it means educators are not doing enough. People should develop human skills, such as imagination and creativity, that means we should imagine and create things.
The arrival of AI really pushes people to think hard about what education is and for what it serves. While Google or Baidu simply provides knowledge, ChatGPT goes a step further and analyzes (分析) a search before providing only an answer.
There’s a great risk if we just follow the answers from ChatGPT instead of questioning it and creating new knowledge (知识). ChatGPT is going to make learning much more interesting and powerful, but humans need to work very hard to win that race with technology.
1. What kind of subjects should we teach after the arrival of ChatGPT?2. If students want to be smarter than a smartphone, what should they do?
3. What is the difference between ChatGPT and Google or Baidu?
4. What should we do with the answers from ChatGPT?
5. Do you like ChatGPT? Why or why not?
After I arrived there, I really found life and study were quite different. There were only 20 students in each class. Students were very active and teachers were not so serious. We could sit with anyone we like. The school had an easy manner, with few rules. In a term, only maths, science, social studies and English were the subjects we had to take. The others were free to choose. So I chose music, art and computer.
In my free time, I joined clubs to take an active part in activities. And I always went to the library after class, where I found a lot of books to help with my studies. In New Zealand, students depended on the library to get knowledge instead of waiting for what teachers asked them to do. Also, I played different kinds of sports such as soccer and tennis. Because I could swim well, I even found a part-time job as a life saver in my school swimming center. As time went by, I found life there was really busy but happy.
Two months has passed, and a week of exams are coming. Now I have to put down all those things and work hard for the exams. Hope I can get the best grades in my class and make my parents proud of me.
1. Did the students in New Zealand have a lot of school rules?

He managed(设法成功)to learn everything he needed to know by himself although(尽管)he studied in school for a short time.
Once upon a time a daughter complained (抱怨) to her father that her life was terrible and that she was tired of fighting. It seemed just as one problem was solved, another one soon followed.
Her father said nothing and took her to the kitchen. He filled three pots with water and placed each on the fire. Once the three pots began to boil, he placed potatoes in one pot, eggs in the second pot and coffee beans (咖啡豆) in the third pot. Having no idea of what was going on, the daughter had no patience and simply waited. After twenty minutes, the father took the potatoes, eggs and coffee beans out into the bowls. Turning to his daughter, he asked. “Dear, what do you see?”
“Potatoes, eggs and coffee,” she replied.
“Look closer,” he said, “and touch the potatoes.” She did and noted that they were soft. He then asked her to take an egg and break it. After pulling off the shell (外壳), she saw the hard-boiled egg. Finally, he asked her to drink the coffee. Its rich smell and taste brought a smile to her face.
“Father, what does this mean?” she asked.
He then explained that the potatoes, the eggs and coffee beans had each faced the same situation—the boiling water. However, each one reacted differently. The potato was strong and hard, but in the boiling water, it became soft and weak. The egg was fragile (脆弱的) before it was put in the boiling water. But after that, its inside became hard. However, the coffee beans were the most special. After they were added to the boiling water, they changed the water and created something nice.
“Which one are you?” he asked his daughter.
In life, things happen around us, but the only thing that truly matters is how you choose to react to it. Life is all about learning, getting used to it and turning all the challenges that we experience into something good. Are you a potato, an egg, or a coffee bean?

Vacation start-ups
After toiling all semester on campus, the summer vacation has finally arrived.
Unlike upperclassmen facing the pressures of job hunting or applying to graduate schools, freshmen and sophomores can usually cut themselves some slack. But in order to gain the upper hand in future competition, more students are choosing to gain business experience and skip having a conventional summer of leisure.
Xia Cheng began doing holiday internships in his first semester as a freshman. He wants to have a company of his own sometime in the future. The 21-year-old English major at a Suzhou-based university partly made his dream come true this summer.
He has launched an express service with two other friends aimed at graduating students who need to send things home from their dorms. “We don’t count on our company making money, but we want to gain experience for the future,” said Xia.
The trio have service phone numbers registered to Xia’s dorm and printed order pads and receipts with their company logo and names. “The more we prepare now the more likely we can survive in business after graduation,” said Xia. “I just don’t want to work for a salary.”
For Geng Li’an, his summer start-up came with a *brainwave which provided extra cash. The business major at Beijing University of Technology is an early bird. His project this summer is to run a fruit and vegetable delivery service. The 21-year-old noticed that many white collar workers are either too busy or too tired to pick up fresh products at morning markets.
So he came up with the idea of a Taobao store for fruit and vegetables. Every morning, Geng shops in accordance with orders taken the previous night and delivers produce to clients’ doors. After a trial run for a week, Geng earned 400 yuan, which he reckons is a good start. “The best part is there is no investment,” said Geng. “I just have to get up early as I always do.”
For someone like Li Siqi, at Southwest University of Nationalities, her summer project is the result of financial pressure. Li’s New Year resolution is to try to make a living on her own to relieve the burden on her family.
With friends she opened an English class in her hometown for junior high school students. For needy pupils, it’s free. “We can not only make money but also help some students to have a better future by learning English well,” said the 20-year-old.
Lin Qian, of the student affairs office of Shenzhen University, praises students’ choice of giving up a holiday to work hard for their future. “Starting up a business on the eve of graduation is often haunted by lack of experience,” said Lin. “Some early business experiments on campus increase your chance of success later.”
But Geng Li’an says that it is not necessary for summer start-ups to evolve into companies. “I just think running a business on my own is helpful for cultivating key skills,” said Geng. “Money is not everything this summer.”

3. What service did Xia Cheng and his friends launch this summer?

First, a company called Lava Mae came up with the idea of mobile showers (移动淋器) for the homeless. Now, two young Australian men have created a similar laundry service (洗衣服务), called Orange Sky, for the homeless.
Lucas and Nicholas have been volunteering at the city’s charities for several years. They came up with the idea in July, 2017. They noticed that when the organizations handed out free clothes, many homeless people took more than they needed and threw them over the next few weeks.
Then they realized that it was simply because the clothes were dirty. Though there are two places in the city that provide a free washing service, one is open only three days a week, while the other is always booked up. On the other hand, most homeless people don’t have any money to wash their clothes at a laundry. So a mobile laundry seemed to be the perfect idea.
Setting it all up was not easy. The first challenge they faced was figuring out how to fit two washing machines into the old van (厢式送货车) they bought for their mobile laundry. Their bigger challenge was getting the city to consider them as a charity. Finally, by October 2017, Orange Sky Laundry was open!
Now they offer their services at six locations. In the last four months, Lucas and Nicholas have not only been able to help homeless people, but also attracted 120 volunteers. With their support, the young men hope to set up similar services in fifteen Australian cities by the end of 2018.
Why did they choose the name, “Orange Sky”? Because orange is their favorite color and also the title of their favorite song.
1. Was the laundry service called Orange Sky?2. What was the first challenge that Lucas and Nicholas had to face?
3. What is the main idea of this passage?
4. Will you help the homeless like the two young men in the future? Why or why not?
Chris works for MSF, an organization also known as Doctors Without Borders (无国界医生). MSF sends trained doctors all over the world to help people after a war or a disaster. Chris is a doctor from France who has travelled to many places to organize programmes that help people.
At the moment, there are over 27,000 trained medical staff taking part in MSF projects and tasks. The organization received the Nobel Peace Prize in 1999. All kinds of doctors can volunteer for MSF. They need to be prepared to go almost anywhere in the world and, of course, they should expect difficult conditions. Doctors with experience in tropical(热带的)diseases are especially useful because most of MSF’s work is in Africa. When MSF accepts a doctor for a task, he has to go for at least six months. When doctors have completed a few tasks, they might be sent on an emergency task following a disaster, such as an earthquake.
But why would a doctor leave a comfortable life and a good salary to join MSF? According to Chris, the experience you gain is a great help in your career. Besides, just like the explorers of the past, you need to keep an open mind and learn to mix well with the people you meet. Most importantly, at the end of each task, you have made a real difference to people’s lives.
