Everyone thinks it’s hard to change a person, but I am     1     to find I have changed myself. At first, I wasn’t an outgoing girl at all. I was never interested in     2    . My opinion of volunteering changed when I started university.

9 . Li Yunli remembers that when she was a child, the water in Dianchi Lake in Kunming was so clean. But the lake was polluted in the 1980s. Local people used to make a living (谋生) by fishing in the lake. But in order to save the lake, many people chose to go somewhere else to make a living. However, Li did something different. She decided to clean the lake.

Li has been cleaning the lake for over 30 years. In 1987, the local government started a volunteer program to deal with the growing number of water hyacinths (水葫芦). Li joined it. The following year, an all-woman team was built to do the cleaning in the lake. Their job was to eliminate the water hyacinths and other things in the lake. Li was the leader of the team.

Since then, Li and her team can often be seen starting work at 7 a. m. The hardest time is from June to August, when the water hyacinths grow fastest. Plants and rubbish during this time are blown in from many different directions. The rain sometimes makes the work harder.

“I grew up near Dianchi Lake. I clean it not only for the lake, but also for myself, ” Li Yunli said. “As long as I work hard to take the lead in the cleanup, more people will join us to protect Dianchi Lake, and the lake will return to its best condition.”

Thanks to the team’s work and the increasing attention from the local government, we have seen positive (积极的) changes of the lake. Everyone in the world should do their part to protect the environment.

When I was in college, a white cat liked to show up at our campus school at time. It was clear that he was a ______ cat because he looked thin and weak. Many students played with him after class and ______ him with all kinds of food. The school didn’t say anything about the cat for a long time.

But one day, we were told that one of our classmates had an infectious illness (传染病) and that the cat was ______ the reason. After that, we were not allowed to touch any animals on campus. The school started to make efforts to keep animals off campus as well.
