1 . Ten-year-old Orion Jean has always known that kindness is important. He often practiced it by volunteering with his family. Last year, after entering the National Kindness Speech Competition, he became crazy about it. Now he works to spread kindness everywhere through projects that help others. He calls his campaign (活动) the Race to Kindness.
When a teacher told him about the competition, Orion had only 24 hours to write, memorize, and record his speech. In it, he talked about the importance of kindness. “Kindness is like spreading hugs around the world.” Orion said. He encouraged listeners to join him in doing small, kind acts for others.
Orion’s speech won the competition. He used his $ 500 prize to support his first Race to Kindness project, a toy drive for a local children’s hospital. He collected 619 toys. After that, Orion wanted to make an even bigger impact (影响). Working with others, he packed meal bags for people in need with a kind message in each bag. Orion also organized several events in his community. In all, he collected more than 100,000 meals!
Orion believes that everyone wins this race. He says, “If you’re kind to someone else, it can make their day brighter and inspire them to pass on kindness. And then it just grows and grows, and it can make the world a better place. ”

Zhu Keming never thought he would be a hero one day, but he was just that on Saturday when he saved the lives of six runners during the mountain marathon (马拉松)in Baiyin, Gansu Province, in which 21 people lost their lives.
It started off as a normal day for the 49-year-old shepherd, who was taking care of his more than 30 sheep on the mountainside. But soon the weather was terrible, with rainfall and hail. The rain got so heavy that he couldn’t see clearly and had to run into a cave where he normally went to have a rest. Soon he fell asleep in the cave after covering himself with some quilts he had stored there.
But he was awakened at 2 pm by an unusual sound that was not coming from his sheep. The sound that woke Zhu was the cry of a runner in the marathon. He was wet from head to toe and trembling because of cold. Zhu took him into the cave, lit a fire and covered the stricken (受伤的)runner with his quilts.
Zhu said that there were soon five runners huddling (挤作一团)in the cave, and he then decided to go outside to try to attract the attention of rescuers (救援者). When he risked coming out of the cave, he found another stricken runner lying on the ground in bad condition. Then the other runners came out of the cave to give a hand. Zhu and the six runners remained huddled around the fire in his cave until 7 pm, when the rescue team arrived.
“I just did what I had to when I saw that these people were in danger. I think everyone would do the same thing in such a situation, “Zhu said to Beijing News.

In 2009, Todd Bol put up a Little Free Library with the used boards. That was to show his respect and love for his mother, who loved reading very much. The idea quickly spread, and Todd made a wise decision to set up Little Free library as a non-profit (非营利的) organization with signs that read “Little Free Library: Take a Book, Return a Book.” Today there are about 100,000 little free libraries in over 100 countries and they have a great influence on people’s life.
Studies have shown that books in the hands of children have a meaningful influence on improving literacy (识字). Little Free Library spreads the idea that literacy is of great importance and pushes people to learn and grow in their own literacy.
Little Free Library can greatly improve the relationship among neighbors and strangers, too. “Within just a few miles of me, there are many little libraries in folks’ front yards, sharing the joy of reading with anyone who passes by. I just live in such a world where books, and the knowledge that comes with them, are highly valued.” Catherine, an American woman, said, “I’ve even received a note of thanks from a gentleman named Esteban. He was especially thankful to have a “friend” on a cold night: ‘Thank you for this wonderful gift of a book. It’s an excellent friend on this cold and lonely night. I’ll return one in its place as soon as I can!’”
If each building has such a library, we will soon have a society that spends less time on the phones and more on the pages of a book.
The idea of Little Free Library was first created by Told Bol. He made it for his mother who was a book Little Free Library tells us that literacy is so If there is such a library in each building in the future, people will spend more time reading instead of playing on the phones. |

8 . Old Man Used His Own Money to Send 33 Strangers to College
A retired carpenter(退休的木匠)from Des Moines has helped send 33 kids to college since his death in 2005.
Dale Schroeder was a simple, honest man. He grew up poor and worked as a carpenter for the same company for 67 years.
“Went to work every day. Worked really hard. Was frugal(节俭的),” said Schroeder’s good friend Steve Nielsen. “He had church jeans and work jeans.”
No one thought that he had saved up a large number of money.
Schroeder never married and had no children, so before he died, he went to his lawyer with a plan for his money. “He said, ‘I never got the chance to go to college. So, I’d like to help kids go to college’,” Nielsen told CBS News.
“Finally, I was curious(好奇的)and I said, ‘How much are we talking about, Dale?’ And he said, ‘Oh, just shy of $3 million’. I nearly fell out of my chair,” Nielsen recalled.
Schroeder left special instructions for his money: send kids to college.
“He wanted to help kids that were like him, and that probably would not have had a chance to go to college without his gift,” Nielsen said.
Schroeder ended up paying for 33 strangers’ college money.
The persons, who have named themselves “Dale’s kids”, got together earlier this month to honor the great man who changed their lives. They’re now doctors, teachers…
