1 . Many years ago, I was the owner of a service station and roadhouse (路边旅馆) on the main road to California.

One very cold, wet night at about 3:30 a.m, there was a knock on the front door of our house. A young man, wet from head to foot, explained that he had run out of petrol (汽油) about 30 km up the road. He had left his wife and his two children behind at the car and said he would go back.

After I had filled a can (罐) with petrol, I took him back to his car where his two-year-old and four-year-old children were both crying, saying that they were cold and hungry. I suggested that he follow me back when his car started again.

Before leaving, I had turned the heater (加热器) on in the roadhouse, so that when we went in, it was nice and warm. While the little ones played and ran around, I prepared bread and butter for the children and hot chocolate for the adults.

It was about 5 a.m. before they left. The young man asked me how much he should pay me and I told him that the petrol was $15. He offered to pay more for the “call-out service”, but I didn’t accept it.

About a month later, I received a letter from a large bus company. We had been trying to get the bus company to stop off at our roadhouse for a long time. To my surprise, its owner was just the young man I had helped.

In his letter, he thanked me again and told me that, from then on, all their buses would stop at my service station. In this case, a little bit of kindness was returned with a lot more.

Village libraries may help change children’s lives.

When Zhang Dongdong, from Beijing, arrived at Sanbao Street in Qinglong, Guizhou in August, 2019, he found that most of the children there lived with their ______. Their parents moved to large cities ______. The families were poor, and there were ______ books for the children to read. They only had textbooks. Zhang felt sorry ______ the children. 3 . Stephen used to work in a company. ________, he got serious heart disease. He couldn’t work for a long time. 4 . One night a man came to my house. He told me, “There is a family with eight ________. They don’t eat anything for some days.” After I asked him where the family was, I took some ________ with me and left.
