2 . Every community has an ice cream shop, but not every shop owner has a special task. When Charles opened the shop, he had a goal in his mind. “My goal is to treat people as a family member and to have a positive influence on my community,” he said.
So his shop soon got a lot of customers. Ordinary customers just came to taste their favorite flavors (口味). Some of them bought other things to support the store. Charles organized activities, such as reading stories, and providing some other free services for children in return. Sometimes, Charles offered ice cream for free. “You know when they come in, you can see some children with snacks, and some children don’t, so I’m not going to let them disappointed. I just want to do something positive.”
One day, Nicole, one of his visitors, noticed Charles giving children free ice cream. She was surprised to hear that Charles was doing so for a long time. She came back and handed him an envelope with $100 one day. Charles was moved by Nicole’s act, and he posted it on the Internet. The friendly acts of Charles and Nicole also inspired (激励) other ice cream owners in the nearby community to provide free ice cream for children.
“In such a large community, whether you do something negative or positive, everything is easy to propagate (宣传),” Charles said. “We should do what we can to help each other, do something positive, and let our kindness pass on the fire.”

7 . If you have no special plans for your holidays, why not spend your time helping others? Nowadays, more and more young people in America volunteer (志愿) to spend their school holidays working for others. Here are some of their plans.
Jim, 16 years old
I’m going to help the Forest Centre build a new road in the mountains. I’ll spend the whole summer living in the tent and breathing the clean mountain air. I’m going to sleep under the stars. It will be a nice sport, and I’ll be able to do something good at the same time.
Susan, 15 years old
This summer, I’m going to work for Special House Program. They build good, low-cost houses and sell them to families that are not very rich. They’ll teach me what to do, so I’ll help people and also have a chance to learn how to build houses.
Michael, 17 years old
I’m going to teach children who have difficulty reading. I’ll work for a program called Reading for Life with my friend called Tom. Every day, I’m going to help children choose and read books that they like. I want to be a teacher and I love children, so this is going to be a great experience for me.
