1 . As a volunteer teacher, I traveled a long way to a small village school in Longzhou, Guangxi. On my way there, I thought about the village, the school, and the children there. However, I felt sad when I arrived there. It wasn’t what I expected. It didn’t look like a school at all! The school had only three rooms, one for Grades 1, 2, and 3, and another one for Grades 4, 5 and 6. There was a third one for me.

The children welcomed me warmly on my first day. They asked me a lot of questions, and I told them stories about myself and my life in Shanghai. The next day, I gave them a test to find out their levels. To my surprise, though the test was very easy, over half of the students failed it, yet they all wanted to learn new things. I knew they needed me.

I was busy preparing lessons and reading test papers every night. I enjoyed teaching these lovely and hard-working children, and I could see that they were making progress with my help.

I have worked in Longzhou for a year now. I’m very happy, and the experience has been very useful for me. I love the small village school and the children. In fact, I would like to continue working here.

2 . My name’s Ella. I’m 22. This year I stay (待) in Thailand for two weeks with my sister Josie. We work as volunteers (志愿者) at a zoo to help the elephants.

One of our important jobs is to collect (收集) the elephants’ food. They eat lots of grass and banana plants. After that, we also help clean the elephants in the river with brushes. I find it is fun. By the light of the moon, we walk with the elephants into the forest (森林).

All the volunteers stay in the same house. Food like meat and fish is really delicious. After dinner, some of us sing and dance happily, and some take a walk by the river. It is the best time to relax.

Now we’re back in the UK. Josie often talks about the life in Thailand with her friends. I think she is happy because she loves and misses the time in Thailand. We really have a great time there. We’ll go back one day—I am sure about that!

6 . Thank you for all your hard work last weekend raising money for Sunny House Old People’s Home. We all ________ a great time and it was nice to see a lot of new volunteers!

Here is what we ________ last weekend.

On Saturday, some ________ went to Sunny House Old People’s Home. Fiona and Tom played chess with some of the old people. David, John ________ Alice made tea for everyone. Sam played the piano and Sally washed the ladies’ hair. ________ the evening, we put on a charity show for ________ old people. It made them very ________. Grace played the violin and Nick sang songs. Some of the old people sang along with ________.

On Sunday, we held a fair (交易会) on the school playground. In the morning, we organized food, drinks, and some other ________ for the fair. And we collected old books, magazines and comics for the stalls. In the afternoon, we sold fruit salad and fruit juice. Also we sold old books, magazines and comics. We handed out flags. We gave the flags to people who put their donations into our basket.

Many students and their families ________ to the fair and donated money. We have raised a lot of money for Sunny House Old People’s Home. Thank you!

I am fighting fires for a volunteer (志愿者) fire company. I still ________ my first fire. I was the second volunteer to be there. The captain of our team was ________ the homeowner, who was surely having one of the ________ days of her life. At midnight, she was standing outside in heavy rain without ________ while her house was in the big fire.

The other volunteer, who was ________ than me, was asked to save the homeowner’s dog first. The captain then waved me over, “Bezos, I need you to go upstairs past the fire. and get this woman a pair of shoes.” Not exactly ________ I was hoping for, but off I went—up the stairs, down the hall, past the fire into ________ bedroom to get a pair of shoes.

I carried the shoes downstairs where I met the other ________ with the dog. We took our “treasures (珍宝)” outside to the homeowner, where, not ________ his received much more attention than mine.

A few weeks later, the company received a letter from the homeowner ________ us for saving her home. The act of ________, which she mentioned above all others, was that someone had ________ got her a pair of shoes.

The thing I’d like you to keep ________ mind is that —Don’t wait. Don’t wait until next time. ________ you have something to give, give it now. Not every day is going to offer us a chance to ________ somebody’s life. Get in the game. Save the shoes. Always remember little actions can mean a lot.

Rob Frenette, a Canadian boy, was often bullied (被欺凌) at school. He was often lonely and scared.     1     He walked into a newspaper office and told them about the bullying. His story went into the newspaper, and soon all the TV stations in Canada wanted to talk to him about his experiences.     2    

In his free time after school, Rob helps other people with bullying problems.With his friend Kate, he set up the website www. bullyingcanada.ca.     3     When people are upset, they can talk on the phone or online to Rob and his team.

Every weekend, Rob answers e-mails from people who have been bullied at school. He also speaks to children and teachers around Canada about bullying. Rob’s most important message is: “    4     So keep trusting yourself. And remember that there are people who care about your problems. You just have to find those people.”

One of Rob’s ideas is “Blue Day”, a special day that works to stop the problem of bullying in schools. On that day, students have to wear blue clothes, and in class, they learn how to stop bullying from happening. More than 150 Canadian schools now celebrate Blue Day.     5
