Jonny, a 15-year-old student, is checking his dad’s old jacket. He says, “You’re never going to wear this again. Can I have it?”
Keith has had a bad day at work, and he is feeling old. And Jonny has hit his pain. Keith raises his voice and says, “What? You mean I’m too old to wear the jacket again?”
Jonny feels like this has come out of nowhere, and now he feels hurt. “But I only asked. Why are you shouting at me?”
“But I don’t like being treated as though I’m too old.”
Both of them feel a bit upset.
Have you ever had a similar argument with the people around you? Here are some tips for you to remember when you’re getting mad.
·Accept your feelings and consider the other person’s feelings. That means not always making yourself “right” or “clever” and the other person “wrong” or “stupid”.
·Explain yourself and not the other person, so you can speak out your ideas by starting with “I” but not “You”.
·Don’t always have to reflect before reacting(回应). If you feel angry, I think it’s a good idea to stop for a moment and understand why.
·Don’t decide the purpose of the other person by your guessing. Try to work out what he or she is feeling, and admit it if you were wrong.
·Don’t forget that it’s never too late to start the ways of communicating.

Each year on Feb 21, UNESCO(联合国教科文组织) holds an International Mother Language Day (IMLD). The event is to help people to pay attention to the disappearance of the world’s languages; many of them are disappearing each year. UNESCO sees this as a terrible fact.
What happens when a language dies out? Something great is lost—not just sounds and marks but the way that people understand the world and communicate with each other. We keep different cultures and traditions through languages. Kill a language and all these are killed too.
Through IMLD, more and more people come to realize the terrible situation and try to stop it. Google’s 2018 Endangered (濒临灭绝的) Languages Project is a good example. Many speakers and protectors of endangered languages upload (上传) texts, audios and videos to the project website. They want to introduce the way that people communicate and express themselves around the world.
The Myaamia Project is the same kind of effort to revive (复活) the language spoken by the Miami tribes (部落) of the United States. Project members work to encourage people to study and communicate with this language, which died out in the 1960s.
These activities give life to those endangered languages. People who work to keep languages alive are not limited to the past. Many young people design apps and use social media to support their activities. They “spread the word” to save the world.
So, while the problem of disappearing languages remains a very serious one, there is hope. We all have a special feeling of our mother language. This is why we should remember the wise words of late president of South Africa, Nelson Mandela: “If you talk to a man in a language he understands, that goes to his head. If you talk to a man in his own language, that goes to his heart.”

You may already know that hurricanes (飓风) are storms which can cause strong waves, wind and rain. They happen during Hurricane Season, which is from June 1st to November 30th in the Atlantic Ocean and from May 15th to November 30th in the Pacific Ocean.
There are five categories (级别) of hurricanes, which depends on the wind speed. The categories help people know how much damage (危害) a hurricane may cause because the greater the wind speed, the more dangerous the storm. For example, a Category 5 hurricane has winds over 155 miles per hour, which are so strong that it can pull down the buildings along the way completely.
When a hurricane happens together with heavy rainfall, there can be a terrible flood (洪水). The center of a hurricane is called the eye. While most of a hurricane has dangerously strong winds, the eye is actually a calm area in the storm. When the eye of a hurricane passed over land, people might think that it’s over, but before long there would be more wind and rain as the second part of the hurricane moves through.
There is no way to stop a hurricane or make it change its way, so if you find yourself in the path (路线) of a hurricane, be sure to remember the following safety advice.
*Be sure you have a radio, fresh drinking water and enough food.
*Tell family members your emergency (紧急情况) plans. Tell them where you will go if you need to leave your home.
*If you live near the ocean, leave your home and travel to a safe place. You could stay in a hotel or in an emergency living area.
*Stay inside during the storm. You could get seriously hurt if you go outside.

6 . There are many reasons to enjoy drinking tea. However, you should let the hot tea cool down a little before you drink it. Why? A new study published (出版) in the International Journal of Cancer gives the answer.
“Many people enjoy drinking tea, coffee and other hot drinks. However, according to our report, drinking very hot tea can increase the risk of esophageal cancer (食道癌), so you’d better wait until hot drinks cool down before drinking.” the lead writer of the study, Dr Farhad Islami of the American Cancer Society, said. For the study, Islami and his team followed more than 50, 000 people aged between 40 and 75 years old. They found 317 of those people had esophageal cancer.
The National Cancer Institute reported that about 17, 290 Americans had esophageal cancer in a year, and that only about 19 percent of sick people survived. However, five years later, they died.
The scientists found that drinking 700ml drinks (about 3 cups) every day or more at a higher temperature (140°F or hotter) would have a 90 percent higher risk of esophageal cancer, compared with people drinking the same amount (数量) at a temperature below 140°F.
This is not the first report showing a person drinking very hot drinks has the risk of cancer. In 2016, the World Health Organization showed a report. It found that drinking very hot drinks of any kind could increase the risk of cancer.

7 . Is there a connection between music and language? According to recent studies, the answer is yes. Here are two examples.
Music and hearing
A study from Northwestern University shows that playing a musical instrument can improve a person’s hearing. As a part of the study, two groups of people listened to a person talking in a noisy room. The people in the first group were musicians, while those in the second group couldn’t play any musical instruments. The musicians could hear the talking more clearly.
“Musicians hear better,” says the leader of the study, Nina Kraus. “Because they learn to pay attention to some sounds. Think about violinists. When they play with the group, they hear their own instruments and many others, too. But they must listen closely to what they are playing, and ignore(忽略) the other sounds. In this way, musicians can play their music better.”
__________
Gottfried Schlaug, a doctor at Harvard Medical School, works with stroke(中风) patients. They can’t tell their names, addresses, or other information. But they can still sing. Dr. Schlaug was surprised to find that singing words helped his patients to finally speak. Why does this work? Schlaug isn’t sure. Music seems to activate different parts of the brain. Suddenly, patients may use those parts again.
According to Nina Kraus, music is not only wonderful but also good for us in many other ways.

8 . Earth Hour started at 7:30 p. m. on March 31, 2007 in Sydney. More than 2.2 million homes and businesses turned off their lights for an hour.
A year later, March 29, Earth Hour 2008 became a global (全球的) activity. 50 million people in 35 countries took part in it.
On March 28, 2009, more than 2, 100 cities in 88 countries joined in it. And the idea “Earth Hour” came to China.
On the evening of 8: 30-9: 30 of March 27, 2010, we turned off lights together with people all over the world in order to fight against climate (气候) changing warm for this year’s “Earth Hour” activities.
Global warming is causing the ice to melt (融化) on mountains all over the world, then the sea level is rising and fresh water is disappearing with the disappearing ice.
It is very important for us to take part in this action. Nowadays the environment problems are becoming more and more serious. Humans just want to take more and more from the earth and never make a contribution (贡献) to the earth. The relationship between humans and the earth is just like that between children and mother. So do something as much as you can, the earth will be better than now. We should pay more attention to the problem of climate change and the climate change is one of the most serious problems in the world. 9 . We usually think that garbage is useless and dirty. However, an art exhibition in 2019 proves that”useless” things can actually be helpful.
Dear Pretty Rubbish, an art event organized by the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWFN) and digital media art company Blackbow, was held in Beijing. It looked at wasteful garbage and asked questions about the relationship between our lifestyles and our garbage.
“We hope that everyone who visited the show can think about how ‘useless things’ are produced, why they are tossed out, and whether ‘useless things’ are really useless”, said Cao Yujia, the design director at Blackbow.
Artists Zhou Yuxuan and Liu Yifan collected nylon cable ties, LED lights and plastic bottles from designers’ workshops to create a work where plastics, in the shape of cells, “grow” in a comer. There, the lights blink(闪烁) regularly just like “breathing”. When people walk near it, the work responds by showing light patterns, as if communicating with the visitors.
Speaking about the work, Zhou said: “It’s like some kind of communication between humans and plastics.”
Plastic has a life longer than almost any creature, taking centuries to break down. Though people think plastics damage the environment, they are a big part of our daily lives. “So we want to ask the question: Although the damage continues, is there a way for humans to reconcile (和解) with plastics?” said Zhou.
