Director: Movie directors direct the movies. They are like the top managers in an office or a factory. The directors choose the actors and tell them how to perform their roles. They work with almost everyone in the movie, telling them what to do and how to do it.
Camera operator: Camera operators are experts at using movie cameras. They work long hours, making sure the pictures and actors look really good in every scene.
Costume designer: Costume designers are responsible for designing or making costumes. Sometimes costume designers have to work late into the night so that actors can have their clothes ready for the next day of filming.
Sound operator: Sound operators are responsible for production sound. They record the dialogue between the actors on the movie set. Later, in production, they add sound effects. They also mix music into the movie.

3 . You’re probably used to getting takeaway(外卖)delivered(递送)to your home these days. Maybe you and your parents even order pizza sometimes. But the first pizza delivery in history took place nearly 150 years ago in Italy.
In 1878, Queen Margherita became the first queen of Italy. As the story goes, the queen grew tired of eating “fancy” meals and wanted to eat “common” food. Raffaele Esposito, the most famous pizza chef(厨师)at that time, was asked to deliver a pizza to the queen.
He prepared a pizza with tomatoes, cheese and basil—the red tomatoes, white cheese and green basil standing for the colors of Italy’s new national flag. As soon as the pizza was out of the oven, he quickly delivered it to the queen himself.
The queen had never eaten pizza before and said it was one of the best things she’d ever eaten. Esposito named the pizza after the queen, and it has been served in nearly every pizza restaurant in the world ever since.
Today, pizza remains one of the world’s most popular fast foods. In 1973, US pizza company Domino’s Pizza promised to deliver its pizzas in “30 minutes or less”—if the pizza was late, it would be free.

4 . According to a report brought out by Peopleonline, about 59, 000 people in China die from drowning(溺水)every year. Minors(未成年人)account for more than 95 percent of the deaths, which mostly happen during their summer vacation. It’s really heartbreaking.
I come from Australia—a country surrounded(环绕)by the ocean. It has one of the lowest death by drowning rates in the world. According to the website, Our World in Data, in 2019, for every 100, 000 people, 0.78 people drowned in Australia, In China, it was 4.28—quite a high rate. In my opinion, such a big difference could be because of swimming pools.
Many Australians have swimming pools—a place where kids can learn to swim in a safe environment. But there’s only one swimming pool in China for every 43, 000 people, according to the magazine The World of Chinese.
Many rural(农村的)areas in China don’t have public swimming pools, and this is where most drownings happen. Kids in rural areas will swim in rivers or lakes. This is more dangerous because rivers and lakes have currents(水流)and very deep parts that people can’t see.
Luckily, changes have already taken place in China’s rural areas. Guangming Daily reported that Qixianshan village in Hunan built an open-air swimming pool where children can have fun. It’s easier for their parents to watch them. Let’s hope every Chinese summer will be a more “water-safe” one than before.

5 . In the Antarctic (南极洲), the weather is usually very cold. To survive, penguins (企鹅) have thick skin and a lot of fat to keep themselves warm. But what about their bare (光秃秃的) feet?
Penguins need bare feet to grip (抓住) the ice in order to be able to walk on it without slipping. Also, their feet can help them to swim well in water.
As we can see, having bare feet is necessary for penguins. So how do the birds keep their feet from freezing?
Penguins have come up with three solutions (解决办法) to this problem. First, to prevent their feet from getting too cold, the penguins may bend their body. In this way, the feather on their belly can cover their feet. Second, they can stand on their heels and use their tail to keep balance so that their feet can be lifted off of the ice. Third, penguins have special heat exchangers in their bodies. These exchangers control the amount of blood flowing down to their feet so that they can be kept at the right temperature.
But remember: though penguins’ feet don’t freeze, they are often very cold. If their feet were always kept warm, they would be wasting lots of energy to do so. That is why penguins keep the temperature of their feet just a few degrees above zero.

6 . Every day after school is out, most students return home. Not for students of a school in Alaska, US,though. Instead, they stay on campus to do activities like archery (射箭) and photography (摄影) and find out how the police work.
A local community organization (社区组织), Juneau Afterschool Coalition, offers these activities. It is trying to provide students with more things to do after school.
Capri Potter, 11, took part in the archery team. She told the KTOO News, a local newspaper, that without archery she would probably watch TV at home. She thought archery was “really really fun”.
Dick Fagnant, an archery teacher, said some children might not be good at football or basketball, but they can still find success in archery. “So it’s a good chance for them to know more in an activity that they’ll enjoy for perhaps the rest of their lives”, he said.
Catherine Johnson, 14, joined the junior police academy (警察学院). In the classroom, the police officers did a lot of hands-on (动手的) activities like role-play to help students understand the police.
Johnson said “I can normally spend the time studying at home.” “I just wanted to keep myself busy and learn some new things,” she said.
Betsy Berman, a worker at the Juneau Afterschool Coalition, believed that these activities could help students kill time and find a career (职业).
They could “spark an interest that gets students to work hard in school,” she said.

Science is the best way we have of finding out about the world. Scientists have ideas about the way things work. Science tests those ideas. Sometimes the test will show that the idea is not correct. If the idea passes the test, it adds to our understanding.
Scientists make predictions (预言). They say something about the future. They might say ‘if I do this, then I think that will happen’. Isaac Newton was a famous scientist. When he shone white light through a glass prism, he saw a spectrum (光谱) of different colors. Newton predicted what would happen if he shone the spectrum through a second prism. He thought the colors would come together and he would see white light again. He tried it. He shone a spectrum through a second prism. He was right. The colors made white light. He discovered that white light is made up of many colors.
It’s important to test your ideas. It’s important to plan a fair test. A scientist wondered how a tree grows. Where does all that material come from? Was it from the soil?
He planted a young tree in a pot. He weighed the pot, the dry soil and the tree at the start of his test. Years later, the tree had grown tall. It had many branches and leaves. The scientist dug it up. He weighed it. The tree weighed far more than when it was young. Then he weighed the pot and the dry soil. It weighed just a bit less. Where had all the new tree material (材料) come from? He knew that trees use water, and a gas from the air, to grow.

10 . In the coastal city of Laguna in Brazil, there is a special fishing team. (A) ________ is made up of fishermen and dolphins (海豚)! They cooperate (合作) to catch fish.
Mauricio Cantor from Oregon State University, US, studied this relationship. As he told Science News Explores, (B) they started to work as a team more than 100 years ago.
“The dolphins are really good at finding fish in dirty water and driving them to the coast,” Cantor said. “The fishermen are really good at catching the fish with their nets.” Once the fish are caught in the nets, dolphins can move in and get some for themselves. ①
Cantor’s study described how fishermen and dolphins give cues (信号) to each other during fishing. When dolphins find fish, they drive them to the coast. After that, they arch (拱起) their backs in front of the fishermen to tell them to get nets ready. ② Fishermen may wait for a long time (C) 如果他们失去最好的机会. Therefore, they should be well-trained to understand the cues from dolphins.
The study found that fishermen are 17 times more likely (可能的) to catch fish by working with dolphins. ③ At the same time, cooperative dolphins have 13 % higher survival rates (生存率) (D) ________ other dolphins.
Human-animal partnerships have been uncommon throughout history. But they give us an idea of how positive our human cooperation can be with nature.
