As the melt-water is very clean and cold, it’s a suitable home for fish, a worker at a fish company in Xinjiang, told China Daily.
To make sure the river stays clean, the company uses machines to clean fish waste in the water. They also use net cages. They are good for the environment. The nets are about 51 meters wide and reach 25 meters deep in the river.
Meanwhile, in Inner Mongolia, white-leg shrimps (南美白对虾) grows well. Saline soil (盐碱土) covers a large part of the desert. In the past, farmers put water from the Yellow River onto the farmland to wash away the salt. This was a waste of salty water.
Scientists then came up with a new idea. They decided to make “seawater” with the salty water by adding in some other components (成分). White-leg shrimps can live well in this kind of water. They taste no different from the same kind of shrimp that grows in the sea.

Zibo city in Shandong Province has unexpectedly gone viral (走红) on Chinese social media (社交媒体) since late February for its local barbecue (烧烤) specialty. In March, the small city received about 4.8 million tourists. It is certainly not the only city that offers barbecue, or even the most famous one, but why did it enjoy such great popularity (知名度)?
Zhou Maosong, president of the Zibo Tourism Promotion Association, said the popularity started from the crowd-gathering effect of cultural and tourism activities including a music festival. Then famous people tasted the barbecue and put their experiences online attracting young people, which led to a wave of students from neighbouring cities visiting Zibo. What better way to attract adventurous and hungry college students except “tasty barbecue that makes you full within only 50 yuan!”
However, Zibo did not fall into the trap (陷阱) of easy fame that dies fast where sellers cheat buyers on price and quality for the most money in the shortest time. A blogger on Douyin took an electronic scale (电子称) to ten barbecue stands in Zibo to test if he would be offered less food. It turned out that not a single one was caught short of weight and some owners even offered him local snacks for free. Local people’s honest and friendly behaviour touched even more people online and again lifted the city’s popularity.
Zibo’s successful story has raised a heated discussion about hometown cultural symbols on Weibo. People post about their cities’ unique dishes, places, etc, hoping their hometown may be the next Zibo.
