2 . New research shows that office workers and other people who sit a lot must exercise for one hour a day. If they do that, they will increase their chances of living longer. Doctors have been telling us for a long time that sitting all day will shorten(缩短)our life.

Researchers now say that sitting in a chair all day is as dangerous as smoking or being overweight to our health. Research on over one million adults found that sitting for at least eight hours a day could increase the risk of dying early by up to 60 percent. However, there is good news for those who sit at a desk all day. An hour’s “brisk(轻快的)exercise” each day can cancel out(抵消)the risk of an early death linked to(与……有关联)sitting all day.

The research was published in time for people to read before the Olympics in Rio de Janeiro. Researchers hope this will encourage people to exercise more. They said being inactive increases the risk of getting heart disease, diabetes(糖尿病)and cancer. Watching TV all day is one of the worst things, because this means we get no exercise and are likely to eat unhealthy snacks. One researcher said office workers should find opportunities to get out of their seat more often. Professor UIf Eklund advised people to take a five-minute break every hour—go to the next office, go upstairs to the coffee machine or go to the printer. He added, “Build physical activity into your everyday life.”

3 . Sometimes choosing where to eat in Suzhou is something of a challenge. No matter how good the food tastes at a chosen restaurant, one may always wonder, “Is there anything better on the next street?” However, I’ve found the answer to this question. When I’m asked to name my favorite place to eat in Suzhou, I will reply right away, “Song He Lou Restaurant”. Why is Song He Lou so special among hundreds of restaurants? Well, for me it comes down to a perfect balance of delicious food, pleasant atmosphere(氛围)and a near-perfect location.

Before coming to Suzhou, I was warned by my friends from other cities in China that the food could be too sweet. For the first few months I chose to eat in Sichuan or Hunan style restaurants instead of eating much local food. However, after falling in love with the city, I came to realize that the food is so closely connected with its local culture. So I asked a local friend to recommend the best place to try real local style food. She came up with the suggestion of Song He Lou.

For a first-time visitor, “Song Shu Gui Yu” and “Xie Fen Tofu” are excellent choices. Suzhou has now become my home and I have a lifetime to enjoy each and every dish on the menu.

4 . “When I was a boy, my grandparents always asked me not to leave food on the plate. They lived in hard times when they were young. So they cannot accept that people don’t cherish food,” says a young man. “It’s not about being rich or poor. It’s a way of life. I always take the leftovers(剩饭菜)home if we eat out.”

Many young people were born in cities. They don’t know how food is grown and where it comes from. So our country is taking actions to save food and help people develop healthy habits. The most famous one is the “Clear Your Plate” campaign(行动), which requires us to eat up all the food on our plates. It was started for the purpose of refusing food waste.

Popular Chinese short-video platforms(平台)like Douyin and Kuaishou will tell you “don’t waste food” and “please build healthy eating habits” when you search for food-eating shows or competitive eaters. They are calling on people to stop food waste and build new eating habits.

Some online groups like Meituan and Eleme have started a half-dish plan. It’s encouraging restaurants to help their customers avoid ordering too much food.

Experts say it’s good for young people to save food and stop waste. If you know how much you can eat, how much you should buy and how to deal with the leftovers, you will manage yourself better. It’s also a way to learn to share food and care about others.

What are you doing about saving food?

8 . There is a famous English saying “You are what you eat”, anditmeans what you put in your mouth will become part of you. Many experts (专家) use it to tell people it's important to have a good eating habit. For example, too much sweet food makes a person overweight(超重). To avoid being fat, kids are told to keep off sweet food. But, a team of American scientists have found something new about eating sweet food.

“When we say some people ‘sweet’, we mean they are kind and friendly to us. Perhaps(也许) this word can help us learn more about people's feelings and acts.” said Brian Meier, a scientist from the study team. “Taste is something we experience every day. What we have done is to find whether we can know someone's character(角色) and behavior(行为) depending on their taste.”

In one of their experiments(实验),   students were asked questions about their character-whether, for example, they were soft-hearted or not. Then they were asked to make a list of their favorite food. According to their answers, the scientists found that the students who liked sweet food were nicer.

In their another experiment, the scientists found that people who preferred sweet food such as cookies and chocolate were more willing to help other people in need, and those who ate non-sweet food such as chips weren’t. For example, people with a sweet tooth were more likely to volunteer to clean up their city, visit sick children in the hospital and so on.

The result of the experiments is that people’s helpfulness or being nice has something to do with their taste for sweet food. So eating sweet food is a useful way to make people nice and helpful. Next time, try some ice-cream.
