Bullies are a big problem in schools. Every week, many children are afraid to go to school. They are afraid they will be picked on(找茬) by a bully. One study found that 52% of children reported being bullied at least once a week. Sixty percent say that they know someone who could harm them. One student was always being joked because he was short. He didn't like to go to school because he had to face the bullies.
Some children choose not to go to school at all so they can avoid the bullies. When they miss school, students fall behind their classmates. A new program is helping put an end to this problem. The program is teaching kids how to deal with bullies. This is helping more children feel safe in school.
One school principal is working to end this negative behavior. Last year, he decided to let students know bullying is not allowed there. Students are now encouraged to report bullies and stand up for themselves. Those found to be bullies face harsh penalties (严厉的处罚). Students at his school participate in a program called "Be Bold". In this program, students work together to prevent violence（暴力）. They do skits（小喜剧） and go into classrooms to talk about the problem. Now a team of middle school students from the US has solved that problem by designing their Recycling Bin app (应用程序).This app encourages people to recycle. Dr James Naismith was born in Canada in 1861 and his first job was at a special sports school in the USA.
One day the school principal told James he was having a problem with the students. Because of heavy snow, the students could not go outside. He told James that they needed a sport the boys could play indoors and gave the teacher two weeks to think of something.
It was on the very last day that James came up with his idea. The "birth of basketball" is said to be on December 21, 1891, when two teams from the school played the first game. It was quite different from the basketball games of today. It had 9 players on each team and footballs were used instead of basketballs.
