2 . Many strange creatures(生物)live deep in the ocean. One of the most mysterious is the huge squid(乌贼). Some had been caught in fishing nets or found washed up on shore(岸). No one had ever seen a giant(巨大的) squid alive up close or had even gotten a picture of one. That all changed a few years ago. Researchers(研究者) got the first pictures of a giant squid alive and swimming in the deep ocean.
Scientists didn’t know just where to look for the squid. It lives in the ocean, about 660 to 2,300 feet deep. Then the scientists had a bright idea. They knew sperm whales(抹香鲸)like nothing better than a delicious squid dinner. Why not follow the whales? Scientists, led by Tsunemi Kubodera, followed some sperm whales off the coast of Japan. Their idea turned out to be correct. Just as they thought, the whales led them to a huge squid.
The squid wasn’t going to come to the scientist. So they used a baited(饵)fishing line to draw it in. Scientists dropped a remote-control camera into the ocean. Then they used the bait to attract(吸引)the squid. The trick worked. As the squid went after the bait, the scientists took hundreds of pictures. The squid swam away finally.
When the scientists were raising the fishing line, they discovered something amazing. The squid had left a piece of itself. It went after some bait that we had on the end of the camera and became stuck (卡住),” said Kyoichi Mori, a researcher.

Honey is produced by bees. But bee farmers may kill them after getting honey because it’s cheaper than feeding the bees through the winter. To save bees, US company MeliBio has found a way to make the world’s first bee-free honey. They used synthetic(合成)biology to create honey directly from plants. This kind of honey tastes just like the real one, and it is healthy, too. | |
When you feel angry or unhappy, what do you do about it? Scientists say you can try to calm others. This can help you calm down. That’s why Purrble was invented. 4 . In Chengdu, tea culture has developed into the Chengdu-featured (特色的) tea house culture. There is a saying about Chengdu tea houses: You could see more tea houses than sunny days. The tea houses catch so much eyesight because of their many different functions (功能): for fun, relaxing and meetings.
The desks and chairs in the tea houses are often made of bamboo. The teas are usually jasmine (茉莉花) tea, Longjing, and Biluochun. They use northern Gaiwan as tea sets (larger than Gongfu Gaiwan). Gaiwan is made up of three parts: the lid (盖), the cup and the saucer (茶碟). When the tea service master pours water into the Gaiwan, you will see the water falling from the air into Gaiwan, with a lively sound. In a moment, water stops. Then look at the Gaiwan. The water in it is just right at the level of the Gaiwan’s mouth, with a simple drop on the desk.
No matter where you are in Chengdu, in a quiet park or in a busy street, you can see those featured tea houses. People can stay there for half a day, having only a cup of tea and snacks. In the talks of friends and neighbors, the colorful tea culture of Sichuan is fully expressed.

A mind map is a tool that connects information around a central subject. It can help you make a knowledge bank to solve problems. A student recently said, “I thought mind mapping would take a lot of time to do but in fact it saves me time. I don’t have to read my, notes over and over again.” Do you know how to make a mind map? These following steps can help you.
Start in the center
Starting in the center of the page lets your brain spread out in all directions and express itself more freely and naturally.
Use as many pictures as possible
Use a picture for your central idea. A picture is worth a thousand words and helps you use your imagination. If you have 10 pictures in your mind map, they are already worth 10,000 words of notes. It helps get your attention and makes you work excitedly!
Draw clear branches (分支)
Connect your main branches to the central picture and connect your second-level branches to the first level, etc. Why? Because brain works by connection. It likes to connect two, three, or four things together. If you connect the branches well, you will understand and remember easily.
Use key words and colors
Every single key word can make you learn more clearly and easily. Try to use more colors. Colors are as exciting to your brain as pictures. Different colors express different parts of your mind map and add great energy and fun to your creative thinking.

First of all, it is very healthy. Each 100g of it has only about 50 calories. So this fat-free fruit has fewer calories than both apples and bananas. And don’t throw away that skin! You can use it to make a delicious and heart-healthy tea. All you need to do is boil the skin in some hot water, let it cool, and enjoy it.
Pineapple has an interesting history. It was first found in South America, where it has been planted for centuries. We call it “pineapple” because early travelers from Europe noticed that it looked a little like the pine cone (松果). Do you know it used to be one of the most expensive fruits in the world. In the 1600s, it cost so much money that kings and queens gave it to each other as gifts to show how rich and powerful they were.
This strange-looking fruit has one more surprise for us. It has a chemical (化学成分) called bromelain, which can digest (消化) the cells in your mouth. The light burning you feel on your tongue after eating too much pineapple is, in fact, that the fruit is eating you! So be careful, and remember to enjoy this amazing and healthy fruit properly.

8 . Huang Yu’s beloved cat Dasuan died. Huang was quite sad. But 66 days later, Dasuan “came back”. Huang got a new cat that looks almost the same as Dasuan thanks to cloning technology (克隆技术).
Most people are interested in cloned pets. The cat was born inside a lab owned by a company in Beijing. To clone the cat, the company’s working stuff took cells from Dasuan and created an embryo (胚胎). Then they put it into a cat mother.
________ In 2001, the world’s first cloned cat was born in the US. In 2005, the world’s first cloned dog was born in South Korea. However, there are arguments against pet cloning. Though the cloned pets copy the dead pet’s appearance, they have different personalities. Some pet lovers like Huang think a clone is a good replacement (替代品) for their dead pets. But others worry that having the same appearance but a different personality will lead to more pain in the long run. Knowing this, the company says it hopes to use AI and other technologies to move memories to cloned pets in the future.
It’s known that cloned pets aren’t as healthy as naturally born pets. They may live shorter lives. Some animal lovers think cloning pets is unacceptable because a large number of stray animals (流浪动物) still need homes. They say there is no need to clone.

China’s chip industry has developed quickly in recent years. You may find it is surprising, but it’s true. China’s imports (出口) of the chips are even bigger in worth than that of oil. The former was worth up to 410 billion dollars, but while there was 250 billion in 2021. NY, Bloomberg news (澎博新闻) Being key to everything electrical, chips (芯片) are needed around the world. However, it’s not easy to make them. A chip may cross national boundaries (国界) many times during the production cycle.
China’s Taiwan and South Korea, for example, play important roles in manufacturing (制造), while other East Asian countries are working on assembling (集成), testing and packaging.
Currently, most of the world’s chips are made in China, while the US is the second biggest producer, CNBC reported. South Korea, Singapore, Malaysia, Japan, Germany, the Philippines, the Netherlands, and Thailand are further big manufacturers. Especially, China’s Taiwan leads the way in making the chips. Their companies, TSMC (台湾积体电路制造公司), and UMC (联华电子公司), are two of the major names in the business, producing chips for some of the biggest tech companies in the world, including Apple and AMD. As of December 2021, TSMC alone provided 54 percent of the world’s semiconductor chips.
China has already developed some influential chip companies, including Allwinners (全志科技), Semiconductor Manufacturing International Corporation (SMIC, 中芯国际), and HiSilicon (海思) which is a subsidiary (子公司) of Huawei.
In chip designing, China has done well in the mid-and low-end market, while China’s designing of more advanced chips still fall behind some developed countries. Besides advanced technology, China is also expanding its production capacity (产能). As of now, only 30 percent of the chips China uses are produced within the country. China plans to raise the rate to 70 percent by 2025 The Chinese government has also done a lot to boost (推动) the country’s chip industry. The 14th Five-Year Plan listed semiconductors and artificial intelligence as two pillars (支柱)?
