Think I Can: How to Push Yourself to Success

“Because I can” is magic. It pushes us past our comfort zones(舒适区域). It gives us a reason to do the things that we think we can’t. Here are a few ways to use this positive thinking in your own life.

Be More Active

Whether it is to go home or go to work, climb the stairs instead of taking the lift. Whether it is to go shopping or watch a film, ride a bike instead of driving a car. Break the “I’m tired” or “It is too hard” or “It is too far” cycle. Increasing your activity level will be good for you.

Try Something New

It is easy for us to make excuses for why we shouldn’t try something new. Maybe you think it is out of your comfort zone. Maybe it seems too difficult. Or maybe, it is just inconvenient(不方便的). Remember that you can try something new. It will help you to move past something bad and discover something new about yourself and possible new interests.

Increase Your Willpower(意志力)

Saying “No” to our favorites can be challenging. However, developing strong willpower, whether it is in response(反应)to our favorite chocolate cake or to over shopping, is something that we can all benefit from. Next time you want to do something you might regret, you have the will power to say “No”.

Speak Up

Often, we meet something that troubles us or makes us unhappy. We have a voice “because I can” in our minds. Talking with your loved ones, such as your parents and friends about how you feel, what you need and what you are thinking about can help you get on well with them and form deeper relationships.

Wukong. Tiangong. Tianwen. Do you know where the names of Chinese space programs come from?

Wukong, the Dark Matter Particle Explorer satellite (暗物质粒子探测卫星), is named after Chinese superhero Monkey King. According to Journey to the west, Monkey King has a pair of sharp eyes which can tell the difference between good and evil. The Wukong satellite is just as sharp-eyed as Monkey King to help scientists search for dark matter in space.

The name of the space station, Tiangong, means “Heavenly Palace”. In Chinese myths(神话), this is the home of Tian Di. Now Tiangong Space Station is a home for Chinese astronauts in space. And China welcomes foreign astronauts to Tiangong in order that they can work together.

Tianwen, China’s Mars missions(任务), gets its name from the poem Tianwen by Qu Yuan. Qu Yuan is a well-known poet from ancient China. In Tiamwen, he had the questions about the sky, stars, nature, myths and the real world, showing his hunger for truth. Perhaps the Tianwen missions will end up answering some of Qu Yuan’s questions.

If you look into more names of Chinese space programs, you will find that they all have beautiful meanings. We, the Chinese people, have a long-cherished (珍藏已久的) space dream. So it is serious to take the naming of Chinese space programs.

4 . As Chinese traditions go, few things are better than sitting around a hotpot while autumn and winter come over North China. Studies show that Kublai Khan, the emperor of the Yuan Dynasty (1271-1368), invented mutton hotpot.

For a long time, only Beijing’s rich people could get their hands on mutton hotpot. Emperor Qianlong (1711-1799) was a true hotpot lover, eating the dish more than 200 times in 1789.

Among the vegetables and meat spread out on the dinner table, mutton has been placed front and center. Many people believe mutton has the effect (效果) of warming the body, making it an ideal food for the colder months. Sheep are also generally fattened up after a summer of eating, making them perfect for meat lovers through the winter.

The Chinese capital is home to more than 2,000 mutton hotpot restaurants, according to the food platform Dazhong Dianping. There are well-known hotpot brands such as Jubaoyuan, Manfulou, Yangdaye, Nanmen and Donglaishun.

Today, many mutton hotpot restaurants divide the meat into many kinds according to which part of a sheep it is cut from. An experienced cook can cut the meat so thin that people can read the words of a book through the piece of the meat.

In the old days, restaurants in the capital only started serving mutton hotpot from Mid-Autumn Festival (the 15th day of the eighth lunar month). Business often stopped after Spring Festival. Restaurant workers would have to find a new job after Dragon Boat Festival (the fifth day of the fifth lunar month), when business came to an end. Nowadays, however, people can enjoy the mutton hotpot all year round with technological development in mutton production across the country.

5 . Ant Forest has been given the UN’s highest environment award—Champions of the Earth. The award was set up in 2005 to recognize (表彰) excellent people or organizations that have had a good influence on the environment.

Ant Forest encourages people to have greener lifestyles to protect the environment better. You are encouraged to record your low-carbon footprint through daily lives like taking the public transport or paying for electricity, heat and water online. For each action, you receive “green energy” points. When you reach a certain number of points, a real tree will be planted. And you can see pictures of your trees in real time by satellite.

Ant Forest has turned people’s green good actions into real trees. Since its beginning in 2016, Ant Forest has planted around 122 million trees. The trees cover an area of 112, 000 hectares in some of China’s driest areas and have prevented more than 7 million tons of carbon emissions (碳排放) from entering the atmosphere (大气层).

“Ant Forest shows how technology can change our world,” says Inger Andersen, Executive Director of the United Nations Environment Program. “Although the environment problems we face are discouraging (令人沮丧的), we have the technology and the knowledge to overcome them. 6 . Over 30 percent of all food goes to waste, according to The United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization(联合国粮农组织). Supermarkets throw away food that is not sold before its sell-by date, while families throw away food that they can’t finish eating.

The world’s first food bank was founded in the US in 1967. Some people and stores donated (捐赠)extra food to the bank. People could take the food home there if they didn’t have money to buy any for themselves. In Shanghai, there is a “shared fridge” in some communities. It is free for everyone to take food from it.

A UK company called The Real Junk Food Project says that food that has passed its sell-by date is still safe to eat. They collect this food from supermarkets and sell it in cafes. You only have to pay as much as you feel is necessary. If you don’t want to spend money, you can volunteer at the cafes instead.
