1 . After months of study, you have some time to relax. So, why not read a book? Well, some people will say, “Why trouble with books? We have the Internet and other media (媒体) that offer a lot more colorful programs. Books are history!” But don’t be fooled. There’s still a lot to be said for reading.

One clear reason is that a well-chosen book is a wonderful collection of words and expression. If you have a good dictionary, I think it’s far easier to get standard (标准的) English than from the TV or the Internet.

An even more important reason is that books give you something that media can not. The web page is always full of pictures and the text is often designed to make it as easy to read as possible. Though “easy” may be welcome, unluckily it’s of little use for any long-time development of reading skills and the general language level. For that, there’s still no substitute (替代品) for a book.

However, perhaps the best reason is that simply choosing what you read and doing it by yourself means that it’s something you do by and for yourself. You can choose what you want to read. It’s hard work, but while you are reading, you’ll find that what once seemed like a duty is now a pleasure. In a word, reading books can bring us pleasure.

One day, you open the fridge and find some moldy (发霉的) food. But before you can throw it away, your mother stops you. She doesn't want to waste food. She cuts off the moldy part and eats the rest. Is it safe to do this?

Mold (霉菌) can grow on almost all kinds of food. Mold is usually green, white, black or gray. Mold makes food soft and changes its color. Moldy food tastes quite bad—and it's not safe to eat.

If you find mold in soft food, just throw it away. Bread, tomatoes and hot dogs are soft food. This kind of food allows mold to easily grow below its surface.

But it's easy to remove mold from hard food. The mold can't grow very deeply inside this kind of food. According to the BBC, you should cut about 2.5 cm around and below the mold and remove it.

It's OK to cut the moldy parts out of hard food and eat the rest. But if the food is completely covered with mold, you should still throw it away.

Most kinds of mold are bad for us. But some kinds of mold can be used to make food. For example, peniciliium (青霉菌) can be used to make many types of cheeses, such as blue cheese. These cheeses are safe to eat and they're quite delicious as well.

1. What color is mold?

4. Is it easy or difficult to remove mold from hard food?

Where does your food come from? How is it made? These days, many people worry about food safety. But food safety is not a new worry. In 1906, Upton Sinclair wrote The Jungle. The book is the story of a poor family in Chicago. It is also about the dangerous ways that food was prepared. People were so worried that the U.S. started testing food.

These days, most food in the world is safe. The reason is laws control where food comes from. They also control how food is managed and prepared. Laws are important. But it’s more important to make sure the rules are followed. A good food safety system keeps people safe. It also helps them eat healthy food. Labels (标签) on food give people important information. Then they can make good choices about their food.

Although food safety systems usually work, there can be problems. Sometimes mistakes are made. For example, a truck might carry eggs and then ice cream. The ice cream could make people sick when the truck isn’t cleaned before carrying it. Other problems are not mistakes. Sometimes companies break rules to make more money. When this happens, people don’t know if their food is safe.

As we all know, food is closely related to our everyday life. We should take action to make food safer!

There are long rivers, and there are famous rivers. The Nile is the world’s longest and most famous river. It runs 6,650 kilometers. Crocodiles and hippos live in its waters. Pyramids built by Egyptians rise along its banks.

The main branch of the Nile, the White Nile, starts just about Lake Victoria, the world’s second largest fresh-water lake, in east central Africa. Then it flows to the north. At Sudan’s capital, another great river called the Blue Nile joins the White Nile. Together, they form on every powerful river. Then it goes through Egypt’s famous Nile Valley before reaching the Mediterranean Sea.

Ancient Egypt, the first great African civilization, started along the banks of the Nile more than 5,000 years ago. Ancient Egypt ruled the Nile Valley for thousands of years. Great pyramids and temples were built on the banks and we can still visit them today.

Without the rich farmland along the banks of Nile, there might be no ancient Egyptian civilization. Every year, the Nile flooded its banks. The flood waters covered the banks with a rich soil. The Nile’s banks were easy to farm and produce crops.

The Nile also made a perfect highway for boats. The river runs north, but the wind on the river blows south. To go south, boaters put up sail to catch the wind. To go north, they took the sails down. Ancient people traded along the river for hundreds of miles.

8 . Cars powered by gasoline were sold for many years before hybrid vehicles that use gasoline, electricity, and solar energy. Car companies are now making cars that are fully powered by electricity only. How do these electric cars measure up to(符合标准)traditional gasoline cars?

Electric and gasoline vehicles look similar on the outside. They have very different parts under their hoods, though. Electric cars have one main moving part: the motor. But gas cars literally have hundreds of parts, often requiring frequent maintenance(保养). Having fewer parts makes the electric car cheaper to maintain and less likely to have mechanical problems.

Electric vehicles are energy efficient, also making them cheaper to operate. It costs about$1.00 to travel 43 miles in an electric car, which is a clear contrast to a gas car, which costs about$1.25 to go 18 miles. Basically, an electric car can go twice as far as a gas car for the same price.

Electric vehicles do not have tailpipe emissions, making them more friendly to the environment, too.

While some details make electric cars seem attractive, other details aren’t as favorable. For example, some electric cars can travel only 60 to 120 miles on a full charge(充电). Most gas cars can drive hundreds of miles on a full tank.

An electric car has to stop more often to get recharged. Therefore, a gas car would be a better option(选择) if you have far to drive. And electric cars aren’t as convenient(方便) to power up as gas cars are. There are plenty of gas stations, but not many charging stations for electric cars. Then, once an electric car reaches a charging station, it can take up to six hours to charge.

There are certainly benefits to both electric cars and gasoline cars. It’s good to know that there is an option.

Our government is doing its best to prevent the rapid spread of the Novel Coronavirus across China. Here are some simple precautions (预防措施) that you can do personally to keep safe from the virus.

When you leave your home, wear masks and gloves and keep them on in subways, buses or in a supermarket. If you are in a social situation where you should take off your gloves, do not touch your face or eyes, no matter what itches (发痒). Keep your hands away from contact with your face. And before you put your gloves back on, wash your hands thoroughly with soap and warm water. Change gloves daily, washing them thoroughly, and don’t wear wet gloves. Stay away from crowds and keep your distance from individual people—a half meter is a good standard. If someone is coughing, you can ask them to put on a mask to protect you from their potentially contaminated (污染的) fluids. If they don’t agree, you step a meter away from them or leave. Don’t shake hands or hug people—politely leave, saying its better for both of you not to come in close contact during an epidemic (流行病).

If you share meals, do not use your personal chopsticks to get food from a serving bowl or plate and. Of course don’t drink out of anybody else’s cups. Place serving spoons in each dish and instruct everybody at the table to get what they want from the serving dishes onto their personal plates or bowls, return the serving spoon to the main dish, and then use their personal chopsticks only to pick food from their personal plate or bowl into their mouth.

With these simple precautions, if they were taken by everybody in your household, building, office, and school, you will dramatically reduce the spread of the virus.
