1 . We live in a world full of many different kinds of people. We want to get along well with others. We also want to be liked by others. The following ways will make others like you.

Do This and You’ll Be Welcome Anywhere

Become really interested in other people. A show of interest must be true. It brings good results not only to the person showing the interest, but also to the person receiving the attention. It is a two-way street—both of you get an advantage.

A Simple Way to Make a Good First Impression

Smile as often as possible. Your smile is a sign of kindness. When someone feels stressed from his or her teachers or parents, your smile is like the sun breaking through the clouds, your smile can help him or her realize that all is hopeful—that there is still joy in the world.

If You Don’t Do This, You Are Getting into Trouble

Remember a person’s name. A person’s name is the sweetest and the most important sound in any language. We should realize the magic in a name. The name makes the person different from others; it makes him or her special among all others. If you remember a person’s name, the relationship between both of you will become much closer.

An Easy Way to Become a Good Talker

Be a careful listener first. Ask questions that other persons will like to answer. Encourage them to talk about themselves and their achievements. What you need to do is just to listen, because people are much more interested in themselves.

One day, you open the fridge and find some moldy (发霉的) food. But before you can throw it away, your mother stops you. She doesn't want to waste food. She cuts off the moldy part and eats the rest. Is it safe to do this?

Mold (霉菌) can grow on almost all kinds of food. Mold is usually green, white, black or gray. Mold makes food soft and changes its color. Moldy food tastes quite bad—and it's not safe to eat.

If you find mold in soft food, just throw it away. Bread, tomatoes and hot dogs are soft food. This kind of food allows mold to easily grow below its surface.

But it's easy to remove mold from hard food. The mold can't grow very deeply inside this kind of food. According to the BBC, you should cut about 2.5 cm around and below the mold and remove it.

It's OK to cut the moldy parts out of hard food and eat the rest. But if the food is completely covered with mold, you should still throw it away.

Most kinds of mold are bad for us. But some kinds of mold can be used to make food. For example, peniciliium (青霉菌) can be used to make many types of cheeses, such as blue cheese. These cheeses are safe to eat and they're quite delicious as well.

6 . Do you shop online with websites like Taobao? When you make an order on Taobao, the money you pay doesn’t go directly to the seller. Instead, it goes through Alipay, which keeps your money for a while. Then Alipay gives the money to the seller.

This is called “third party online payment (支付)”. There is a transfer station (中转站) between sellers and buyers to make online shopping safe. Buyers don’t need to worry about paying for products and then receiving nothing. Sellers also don’t worry about receiving no money after sending out products. These transfer stations are usually set up by payment service companies (公司) such as Alipay, Tenpay and Yeepay. Among them, Alipay is the biggest in China. It has more than 270 million active users.

While most online sellers and shoppers like the third party online payment, banks don’t. That is because companies like Alipay are fighting over money with the banks. Users can make money through Alipay. So lots of people choose to put money in Alipay rather than in banks.

But WeChat payment is not the same. It doesn’t have a transfer station. When paying through WeChat, the buyers’ money goes directly to the sellers. That’s why so many people are excited about receiving and handing out hongbao.

In a word, the two forms of payment are trying to make online shopping easier. Which one do you prefer?

8 . Abraham Lincoln was born in Kentucky in 1809. His mother died when he was ten years old. Later, his family moved to Illinois and his father remarried. The family was poor, so they had to struggle just to live. In Illinois, there were neither teachers nor schools, but Lincoln’s stepmother encouraged him to study. He learned to read and write while working on the farm.
At twenty-one, Lincoln left home. He soon received a law license and became a lawyer. People trusted him and began to call him “Honest Abe”.
During the following years, he took a more active part in polities. Soon he was not only a highly respected lawyer but also a well-known politician. He was elected the sixteenth president of the United States in 1860, and in the next year the Civil War broke out.

9 . 阅读下面短文,在表格内的空白处填入合适的答案(每空格限填一词)

It seems that a family just isn’t complete (完整的) without a pet. But if pets aren’t suitable to a family’s lifestyle or environment, they can quickly lead to problems such as stress or arguments (争执). To save yourself and your family such problems, treat this decision seriously.

When choosing a pet, people must consider the family’s health. Many people are allergic (过敏的) to cats and dogs. Perhaps a dog or cat with short hair will be fine. And a dog might not be the best choice for a child who is naughty (顽皮的) because the dog might bite him or her. Some people can also have problems with certain pets. It’s a good idea to spend a little time with the pet around each member of the family before making your decision.

Consider the quality of life of the pet, too. If a pet is used to having space to run around, it can quickly develop psychological (心理的) problems when it is kept in a small flat all day. If pets are allowed to run about in areas with lots of traffic, they can meet an early end. Cats shouldn’t be brought into homes that already have large dogs because they won’t be able to get along well with each other.

The decision as to what kind of pet to choose is very important. If you find the right one to suit (适合) everyone in the family and their lifestyle, then it’s time to choose one. Remember that your decision is important because it can have effects that last for many years.

Nearly everyone wants to be successful. It can be very hard to succeed, though. Here is some advice to help you:

●Plan for success

Wanting success is not enough. You have to plan for it. Ask yourself: How am I going to be successful? What do I have to learn to achieve the success I want? And how long will it take me to get it? These questions will help you plan for your success.

●Form good habits

If you study the lives of successful people, you’ll find that they have excellent work habits. Edison, for example, had a habit of always coming up with new ideas, and this helped him become one of the greatest inventors. Forming such habits can be boring, but useful.

●Never stop learning

Successful people never stop learning. They never say “I’ve learned enough. There is nothing more I need to know.” You have to understand that the moment you stop learning is the moment you stop progressing. We live in an ever-changing (不断变化的) world, and need to be able to keep up with it.

●Let failure motivate (提升) you
