1 . There is great excitement and argument(争论)over Artificial Intelligence(AI, 人工智能). The argument about whether robots will replace teachers in the classroom is very heated. Some people think it is sure to happen in the next ten years. Others think that the value a good teacher brings, not only to the classroom setting. but in developing a child’s confidence and creativity outside lessons, cannot be easily replaced.

AI is not new for us and is already being used successfully in many fields, such as medicine, science and so on. So what does this mean for our future? In my view, AI will help kids to think more freely and creatively. Can AI possibly cut down the teaching work in the future, too? Of course. Our teachers are always busy preparing materials for their lessons, Just imagine how happy they would be if they don’t have to copy hundreds of paper, but instead, have this task or others done by machines.

However, most importantly, I do not believe AI will be able to imitate the human mental condition totally, especially emotional intelligence(情商). What makes learning unforgettable is shared experience, human interaction(互相作用), and long-lasting positive relationships. For example, experienced teachers can comfort a student if he has suffered a serious loss. But it hasn’t been proved that robots can imitate this well.

I also believe we need to continue to celebrate our kids’ personality and their ability not only to make decisions but also make the right decisions. These are skills that they can get as they get more life experience and are given the space to experiment.

To what degree can teachers use AI in their classes? You can have all the data(数据)you like with the help of AI, but great teachers will also need to depend on their own feelings.

3 . How can you remember a song from your childhood to this day? Why do your teachers use songs to teach you English? It seems there is a scientific reason for this.

Researchers are now studying the relationship between music and remembering a foreign language. They find that remembering words in a song is the best way to remember even the most difficult language.

“Singing could be a new way of learning a foreign language. The brain likes to remember things when they are used in a catchy and meaningful way” said Dr Karen Ludke. The findings may help those who have difficulty leaning foreign languages. On his blog Dr Ludke wrote “A listen-and-repeat singing method can support foreign language leaning and open the door for future research in this area.”

Many language teachers know the value of using and singing. Hua Zhuying a teacher at a Chinese language school in Washington D. C. depends heavily on songs in teaching Chinese. She says “I use music all the time to teach children Chinese. For little kids usually we use English songs but teach them the Chinese lyrics. So it's easy for them to start because they know the music. Not only does it work but it is fun for the kids.”

“Sometimes I think if I were taught English that way maybe I would speak much better English than now” Hua Zhuying adds.

6 . “How are you?” is a nice question. It’s a friendly way that people in the USA greet each other. But “How are you?” is also a very unusual question. It’s a question that often doesn’t need an answer. The person who asks “How are you?” hopes to hear the answer “Fine”, even if the person’s friend isn’t fine. The reason is that “How are you?” isn’t really a question and “Fine” isn’t really an answer. They are simply other ways of saying “Hello” or “Hi”.

Sometimes, people don’t say exactly what they mean. For example, when someone asks “Do you agree?”, the other person might think, “No, I disagree. I think you’re wrong...” But it isn’t very polite to disagree so strongly, so the other person might say “I’m not sure.” It’s a nicer way to say that you don’t agree with someone.

People don’t say exactly what they are thinking when they want to finish talking with other people. For example, many talks over the phone finish when one person says “I’ve to go now.” Often, the person who wants to hang up gives an excuse: “Someone’s at the door.” “Something is burning on the stove.” The excuses might be real, or not. Perhaps the person who wants to hang up simply doesn’t want to talk any more, but it isn’t polite to say that. The excuse is more polite, and it doesn’t hurt the other person.

Whether they are greeting each other, talking about an idea, or finishing a talk, people don’t say exactly what they are thinking. It’s an important way that people try to be nice to each other, and it’s part of the game of language.

8 . When did you last see a polar(极地的) bear? On a trip to a zoo, perhaps? If you had attended a winter activity in New York a few years ago, you would have seen a whole polar bear club. These “Polar Bears” are people who meet frequently(频繁地) in winter to swim in freezing cold water. That day, the air temperature was 3℃, and the water temperature was a bit higher. The members of the Polar Bear Club at Coney Island, New York are usually about the age of 60. Members must satisfy two requirements(要求). First, they must get along well with everyone else in the group. This is very important because there are so many different kinds of people in the club. Polar Bears must also agree to swim outdoors at least twice a month from November through February.

Doctors do not agree about the medical effects of cold-water swimming. Some are worried about the danger of a condition in which the body’s temperature drops so low that finally the heart stops. Other doctors, however, point out that there is more danger of a heart attack(心脏病发作) during summer swimming because the difference between the air temperature and water temperature is much greater in summer than in winter.

The Polar Bears themselves are satisfied with the benefits (or advantages) of cold-water swimming. They say that their favorite form of exercise is very good for the circulatory system(循环系统) because it forces the blood to move fast to keep the body warm. Cold-water swimmers usually turn bright red after a few minutes in the water. A person who turns blue probably has a very poor circulatory system and should not try cold-water swimming.

The main benefits of cold-water swimming are probably mental. The Polar Bears love to swim all year round; they find it fun and relaxing. As one 70-year-old woman says, “When I go into water, I pour my troubles into the ocean and let them float away.”

9 . It is true that people with better education are usually able to get better paying jobs. In other words, they have more chances to choose a good job while people with little or no education don’t. It seems that the purpose of education is to make people get jobs. But this isn’t accepted by all people.

Some people may think that a person should spend the best years of his life to get education only for a way of living. This was probably one of the earliest reasons of education. In fact, if education is just a way of making a living, people don’t need to spend so much time in school. People can get education for a living in a short time. Subjects like history and geography need not be taught to everyone. Even language and mathematics need not be taught in detail(详细地), either. Here it is clear that education is much more than teaching a man to get a way of living.

Education is well-rounded and it is mainly for improving a man. It is not only to teach him to speak, read and write, but also to develop his creative (有创造力的) thinking and other abilities. After that, it is to make him a wise man and thankfully enjoy the achievements (成果) of human. Education is to make a man lead a better life. Educated people are expected to be able to listen to good music, read good books, watch plays and most of all take an interest in the world.

I would agree that making a good living is an important reason for education, but certainly not the most important or the main reason.

1. People with little education usually ______.
A.spend a long time in schoolB.have a good chance to get a job
C.spend the best years to choose jobsD.have fewer chances to get a good job

3. The underlined word “well-rounded” in the passage means “_______” in Chinese.
A.圆满的B.崭新的C.全面的D.公平的
4. It is hoped that educated people will be able to ______.
A.take an interest in the whole world
B.develop their abilities to make plays
C.accept education as a way of living
D.learn subjects like language and math
5. The passage mainly tells us that _______.
A.people can get education in a short time
B.education should make a man improve
C.people should be able to get better paying jobs
D.all subjects are so important for a way of living

10 . Many people have been making fun of Paris Hilton online recently. The 36-year-old US actress and model said on social media that she “invented” the selfie (自拍) in 2006, posting a photo of her and Britney Spears as “proof”. Internet users immediately proved her wrong, posting evidence (证据)of selfies that appeared much earlier in history.

In one example, a user posted a selfie that Buzz Aldrin, the famous astronaut, took a picture of himself in space in 1966. But perhaps the funniest example was a black-and-white selfie that was taken by American photographer Robert Cornelius in 1839. It is quite possibly the first selfie ever taken in history.

Why do people love to take selfies so much? Is it because we’re naturally vain (虚荣的) and proud? Maybe it’s actually the opposite--perhaps we feel insecure (没有安全感的) or shy. So we take photos of ourselves, post them online and wait for people to give us compliments (称赞).

Taking selfies can be dangerous, though. For example, if you take one while you’re on holiday and post it online, some thieves might see it and know that you aren’t home. They then might break into your home and steal your things while you’re away.

There are even people who have died while taking selfies. According to Forbes magazine, 127 people around the world died while taking selfies from 2014 to 2016. It can be very dangerous to take selfies while standing near high places, like roofs and cliffs (悬崖). Taking selfies underwater or on train tracks is also quite dangerous. So be careful out there if you decide to take some.

1. The underlined word “proof” in Paragraph 1 means ________.
A.消息B.证据C.例子D.历史
2. Which may be the earliest selfie, according to the story?
A.Paris Hilton and Britney Spears’ selfie.B.Buzz Aldrin’s selfie in space.
C.A color photo taken by an American scientist.D.A black-and-white photo of Robert Cornelius.
3. What is the main idea of the third paragraph?
A.Paris Hilton is insecure and shy.B.Why people enjoy taking selfies.
C.Why people are naturally vain.D.Taking selfies is a good way to make friends.
4. What can we learn from paragraphs 4 and 5?
A.Taking selfies can be dangerous.
B.There are no advantages to taking selfies.
C.Every year, 127 people die from taking selfies, on average.
D.Taking selfies near cliffs is more dangerous than underwater.
5. If you are the writer, what will you write at the end of the passage?
A.Selfies have been around for longer than you think.
B.There is no need to take selfies near high places.
C.No selfie is worth risking your life for— no matter how good it might look.
D.People will lose their lives while taking selfies.
