1 . In your opinion, how should a man dress, behave and talk? There is no single Standard(标准). Many girls today love   xiaoxianrou, or "little fresh meat", which refers to young male stars who are delicate(精致的) and cute. Of course, there are also people who still appreciate the traditional male image of being muscular(肌肉发达的) and strong.

This topic caused some heated discussions across China in September.

It started when CCTV invited four young actors to perform on First Class for the New Semester(《开学第一课》), an educational TV show for primary and secondary school students that aired on Sept.1. The four actors all appeared feminine(女性化的), having slender frames(苗条身材)and wearing makeup.

Afterwards, criticism(批评) of their appearance(外表) was everywhere on the Internet. Some called the actors "sissies", a word that is used to refer to men who have a "soft" appearance. Some parents believe that popularizing this kind of soft male image is in poor taste and could have an influence on their children's personal development.

"As famous stars, the male idols(偶像) focused too much on their appearance and failed to act as proper role models, "Xinhua said. "If men behave this way, China will never become the strong country it hopes to be", Xinhua added.

However, others have a more open mind toward it. "It's a stereotype(刻板印象)to think all male stars should be as masculine as Jackie Chan. As society diversifies( 多样化), there are more options(选项) for fans to choose from, "Liang Yurou,19, a college student from Fujian Province, told China Daily.

Some people also pointed out that gender can be expressed in different ways. As a male, caring about one's appearance has nothing to do with one's degree of "manliness".

"No matter what kind of personal style or quality he or she chooses to present, whether it is strong-willed or gentle, that doesn't stop them from being an excellent person, "China Women's Daily said in a report.

This was echoed( 附和)by People's Daily. "A man's strength should be judged (评判)according to their inner qualities-not their physical appearance, "it said in an article.

2 . The iPhone once was called a magical product (产品) because of it success over the years. However, now the iPhone seems to lose its attraction (吸引力).

Apple got only 84.3 billion dollars for the company’s first quarter (季度) of 2019. It’s the company’s worst sale result in the recent ten years. Tim Cook, CEO of Apple, explained that the decline (下降) was mainly because of the weaker need in China.

However, people believe that Apple itself is largely responsible (有责任的) for the decline. For example, an iPhone Xs Max, one of the company’s newest smart phones, costs 1,450 dollars in the US, while other phones usually cost no more than 500 dollars. This made people feel not so necessary to change their old phones for the newest ones.

On the other hand, Huawei, the biggest competitor (竞争者) against Apple, is always improving the technology (技术) in its phones. For example, Huawei put a triple-lens (三镜头) camera on its P20Pro in 2018 and a foldable (可折叠的) phone Mate X in 2019. However, Apple did worse in this part.

“It’s true that the technology in Chinese phones is getting better and better and more and more Chinese people would like to buy a Huawei phone. I’m one of them.” said FengYin, a 32-year-old engineer in China.

In fact, it’s not just Chinese customers that trust in Chinese smart phone brands (品牌). Tom from London bought his eighth Huawei phone in 2018. He also advised his 56-year-old aunt to buy one. “I wasn’t really worried about the fact that it was a Chinese brand, because we know that China is now making wonderful products with high technology.” Tom told New York Times about his Huawei phone.

3 . It’s sure that having a lovely pet can make people’s home life better—and in fact, it is of great importance in the pet owners’ career lives (职业生涯). In fact, according to a new survey, people with pets may be more successful in their careers and this is good news for those pet parents who want to be successful and powerful.

Well, according to the research, some successful people said that their pets helped teach them many useful lessons, like being more responsible (有责任心的) and creative, showing love for others, and keeping rules. And all of these are so important in the business world.

What about people who grew up without pets, but have adopted (领养) pets when they are adults (成年人)? Luckily for those, the survey showed that having pets now can also help with their career success.

According to the research, 86 percent of pet parents said owning pets can help them keep a good order in their lives, plan their time better, and finish more work without wasting time or money. But even though you don’t think your pet has truly helped you, it will be greatly useful when your workmates get to know that you have a pet. A soap opera called Tiger Mother and Cat Father is popular in China now. The tiger mother is pretty strict with her daughter and the little girl is not allowed to watch TV or play computer games. Some western (西方的) festivals like Christmas, April Fool’s Day and Valentine’s Day are becoming more and more popular in China. Some people say that we should keep away from them and just leave them there. Other people believe that we need to be open-minded (无偏见的) to the foreign (外国的) festivals and learn some western culture from them.

As I see, foreign festivals, such as Christmas, on the one hand, can bring happiness and joy to all of us; on the other hand, can offer (提供) a chance to the business. It is quite a good way for Chinese to know more about other countries. Some Chinese people also celebrate (庆祝) foreign festivals to enjoy something new and interesting to relax them in the modern city life.

While we have a lot of festivals such as Spring Festival, Lantern Festival, Dragon Boat Festival and so on, we should celebrate and protect them so that we can enjoy and learn traditional (传统的) culture from them. As we all know, the government (政府) also cares more about the traditional festivals. People in China will have a day off when a traditional festival comes.

The world is getting smaller and smaller. We should pay more attention to (更关注) the traditional festivals to protect our culture. At the same time we can also celebrate the western festivals in order for cross-cultural (跨文化的) communication (交流).

It's true that studying abroad can help students develop themselves. Their foreign Language will be improved and it will be easier to find jobs.

But there are problems that should be considered (考虑). Language is the first. Students must spend a lot of time learning another language.

Students must also learn to live without parents' care and deal with all kinds of things they haven't had to do before looking after themselves. There are reports about Chinese students abroad meeting with lots of difficulties and giving finally. When they have to take care of themselves, it is hard for students to study well.

Finally studying abroad brings a heavy burden (负担) to the family. For most Chinese parents, the cost of studying abroad is very high. But is it worth?

9 . Many of us have feelings of loneliness as we grow up. As a teenager, just eating alone in the dining hall can’t be acceptable, and girls even go to the restrooms hand in hand. They fear being called a “loner”.

In these cases, we might use the word “loner” in a disapproving (不赞成的) way. However, it can actually have a positive meaning as well.

It all depends on our attitude toward being alone. If we see being alone as something not very good, we will be against it. But if we understand that it’s an everyday part of life, we’ll be able to “hug the beauty of our solo (单独的) journey”, as best-selling US writer Mandy Hale wrote in her book The Single Woman.

In some countries, more young people are choosing to be loners. In South Korea, “honjok” has become a growing lifestyle. The word comes from Korean “hon” (alone) and “jok” (group). These people eat alone, travel alone, and enjoy being by themselves. “I hope it grows into a self-supporting culture of happiness.” said Jang Jae Young, a South Korean who runs a website about this solo lifestyle called www.honjok.me.

In Japan, people have developed a strong “loner culture” and even a “loner economy (经济).” There are many solo KTVs and solo coffee bars. Noodle restaurants for solo customers are especially popular. There are boards which separate each seat. Customers fill out a form to make an order, and then press a button to call the waiter. They don’t see the faces of other customers or waiters.

People are becoming more experienced in and comfortable about being alone. This doesn’t mean we should totally keep ourselves away from the outside world, of course. But it doesn’t hurt to have some “me time” once in a while.

Not all memories are sweet. Some people spend all their lives trying to forget bad experiences. Different accidents can leave people with terrible wounds both in body and mind. Often they recall these experiences in their awful dreams.

Now American researchers think they are close to developing a kind of medicine, which will help people forget bad memories. The medicine is designed to be taken soon   after a scary experience. They hope it might cut down, or possibly clean up, the effect ( 影 响 ) of painful memories. In November, experts tested a drug on people in the US and France. The drug stops the body releasing chemicals(释放化学物质)that make memories remain in the brain. So far the research has suggested that only the effects of memories in mind may be cut down, not that the memories are cleaned up.

The research has caused a great deal of argument. Some think it is a bad idea, while others support it.

Supporters say it could lead to a kind of medicine that prevent or treat soldiers’ troubling memories after war. They say that there are many people who suffer from terrible memories.

“Some memories can destroy people’s lives. They come back to you when you don’t want to have them in a daydream or awful dreams at night. They usually come with very painful feelings,” said Roger Pitman, a professor at Harvard Medical School. “This could cut down lots of that suffering.”

But those who are against the research say changing memories is very dangerous because memories make us different from others. They also help us all avoid the mistakes of the past.

“All of us can think of bad events in our lives that were terrible at the time but make us who we are. I’m not sure if I want to forget those feelings.” said Rebecca Dresser, a medical scientist.

A.prevent body producing certain chemicals
B.help people remembering bad experiences

A.Some memories can make people’s lives in a mess.
B.Experiencing bad events makes us different from others.
