When the first chatting robot (chatbot) started in 2022, it became so popular that it had over 1,000,000 users within a week. But schools across the US soon banned (禁止) it. Students could use it to do so many things. Parents and teachers were very worried that students might not do their homework themselves but ask the chatbot for help. What do you think? Do you think schools should ban it? | What you need to know: * A chatbot is a computer program that you can “talk” to. It replies like a person. * When people ask the chatbot a question, it looks for information and gives an answer. * Chatbots can talk about anything. They can write articles about history, write lyrics (歌词) in the style of rock stars, or explain how to solve math problems... |
Yes! Getting help with schoolwork is great, but chatbots don’t always use the most reliable (可信的) sources. Students might hand in homework with wrong information. Besides, they wouldn’t really use their critical thinking (批判性思维) skills to do their work. What’s worse, if students use the chatbot too much for the school project, it could be seen as cheating (作弊). Also, teachers may find it difficult to decide if the students have used the chatbot or not for their schoolwork. Although chatbots can help teachers grade tests quickly, they may make mistakes, too. | No! Chatbots are here to stay. Technology is changing education, and banning it won’t stop that at all. Why not teach kids to use chatbots in the right way, like they use calculators (计算器) or online dictionaries? Chatbots could get students to start learning by doing research, teaching words and expressions, and helping students find out the next step of a math problem. ▲ As for the teachers, chatbots can give them a hand in different ways, like creating tests, designing homework, making lesson plans or writing personal tasks for students at different levels. Everybody wins. |

2 . On October 16th, a piece of news attracted a heated discussion on the Internet. An untied big black dog suddenly bit(咬) a 2-year-old girl in Chengdu. Although the mother and a brave woman cleaner tried so hard to protect the little girl, it still caused serious injury(伤害) on that poor girl. Actually, one man guard was nearby but didn’t give a hand on that day.
After it happened, some animal experts said that dog owners should pass a test. This would mean that if a person wanted a pet, they would have to study how to best care for, train and control a dog. Some people believe that training owners properly, as well as their dogs, can help prevent dog aggression(预防攻击). This way, it can better protect little kids away from crazy dogs. Others say that dog owner tests are unnecessary and it would be too difficult to make the dog owners clear about the tests. What’s more, cats and other pets also fight and cause trouble, so why is it only for dogs?
As far as I know, life is equal both for humans and animals. What is truly important is that both sides shouldn’t hurt each other or even cause death. If so, it is terrible, isn’t it?

3 . During the May Day holiday, many people want to find dazi (搭子) or activity partners (活动伙伴) on Xiaohongshu or Weibo for travelling. The activity of finding dazi is a new way of social contact (社交交往) for young people.
The idea of this activity is easy to understand. It helps people to find someone who has the same hobby (爱好) as them and it doesn’t take much time. With one or a few dazi, people have more fun in the activities they are interested in.
A girl called Ge Jinyuan, is a high school student from Shandong. She likes talking with her meal dazi when she is having lunch. “We love to share our ideas on the food,” said the girl. “If my meal dazi doesn’t come to school one day, I will be sad.”
“It takes a lot of time to make friends with others. But it doesn’t need much time to have a dazi,” said another girl Shi Zhimin, a student from Shanxi. Ge Jinyuan also has the same idea. She doesn’t want to spend too much time making friends, so having a dazi is good for her. She can feel relaxed and then has more time to study.
Also, ________________. “Once, my game dazi and I did something wrong when playing the game EggyParty, but we worked together to turn the tide (扭转局势). By playing the game together, I find I like working with others now!” Shi Zhimin said.
Dazi is usually helpful but it can be dangerous. People may lie on the Internet. For example, a young and beautiful girl on the Internet may be an old, short, and heavy man in real life. So think twice when finding Dazi.

4 . Do you often compare(比较)yourself with other people and wish you could be more like them? We are all different in our own way. Self-acceptance can help you feel happier and better about yourself.
What is self-acceptance?
Self-acceptance means learning to accept(接受)the things that make you who you are. And being thankful for what you’re good at, like sports, science or singing. Self-acceptance also means valuing(重视)the parts of you that don’t shine very brightly, like being forgetful or untidy. A 12-year-old girl, Lily, says self-acceptance means “knowing your own weaknesses and strengths(强项), and accepting who you are no matter what other people say or think.”
Why is self-acceptance good for you?
When you accept who you are, you worry less about things you can’t change. It makes you feel happier and more confident. The Anna Freud Centre, a charity that helps young people, says everyone can feel that they have to be perfect(完美的), but that makes us forget about the little things that make us special. ▲ For example, some people may find letters or numbers hard to read, but they might have strengths in other things, like finding good ways to work out problems.
How can you accept yourself?
Start by making a list of all the things you like about yourself. Maybe you’re good at cooking, or people find it easy to talk to you. 5 . Recently, David, a professor at Harvard Theological Seminary shared and explained his ideas on Chinese faith(信仰) and belief in a speech. After Professor David’s video of the speech was posted on social networking sites, it got a heated discussion among people abroad, which also reminded us Chinese to be proud of our culture, and pass the great spirits on. This is part of his speech.
Chinese themselves may not know they have this kind of national spirits, which help to make them stand up till now and lead them to a better future. In American myths(神话), fire is given by God. In Greek myths, fire is stolen by Prometheus but in Chinese myths, fire is made by them. This is the difference. They use such stories like Drilling Wood for Fire to warn future generations to fight against nature! When facing flood, we hid ourselves in the Ark of Noah, but in the stories of the Chinese, their ancestors got over the difficulties and beat the flood back in the story of Dayu and the Flood. See, it is still a struggle(奋斗), a struggle against disasters! If you read Chinese myths, you will find them quite unbelievable. In Chinese culture shown in the stories, you will find that there is only one word-struggle! If there is a mountain in front of your door, do you choose to move the house or dig a tunnel? It is clear that moving the house is the best choice. However, in the Chinese story Yu Gong Moves the Mountain, they moved the mountain away! Chinese ancestors used such stories to tell future generations: you can lose, but you can’t give in. Unluckily, our myths tell people to listen to God’s ideas. |
These myths, which we Chinese have heard from childhood and passed on to the next generation, are more than just stories. In fact, the speech from David reminds all that it is important for us Chinese to learn about the national spirits and the faith. We dare to fight, are not afraid of losing, and will not accept failure easily.

6 . Since September, many schools have increased the number of PE classes from three times a week to five or even more. This is in response to (响应) China’s new standard (标准) on PE classes. The standard asks schools to make sure that 10 to 11 percent of all class time must be PE classes, third only to Chinese and math.
Along with easy exercises like running and long jump, the standard also asks schools to give students other popular sports to do.
Ma Jiajun, 17, from Jilin, set a new world record for “the most consecutive jump rope triples (连续三摇跳绳)” with 701 times. His teacher Chen Peng said that the school has always kept an eye on PE. With Ma as a role model now, students are more hard-working on not only jump rope but also other kinds of sports.
“At first tai chi was only needed during break time to promote Chinese traditional culture, but students gradually fell in love with it,” said Gao Yuxiang from a middle school of Shandong. Senior 1 students all need to do it, and there’s a tai chi contest every year for Senior 2 students. “Different from ball games, tai chi calms me down and eases my mind, getting me ready for the next class,” said Gao.
“I really enjoy hip-hop dance,” Ren Jianing, a high school student, said, “The class doesn’t need any experience, so anyone can sign up.” Every class they practice a part of the dance and in the next class put the parts together into a whole dance. “Our shirts are all wet after class even on the coldest days of winter,” said Ren.

Did you ever see a donation(捐赠)box in your neighbourhood? Did you ever put your old clothes into the donation box? If not, you can have a try now, because the clothes donation is becoming more popular especially at the end of the year.
“I often pick out some of my clothes which are out of style after going shopping. Then I’ll put them into the donation box.” Miss Wang, a smart young woman says.
“That seems like a good idea. Some clothes in the box are quite new. People can either wear them or use them to make things such as handbags and pencil cases.” Mrs. Lee, an old woman says, sometimes I like to look through the box for some nice clothes.”
However, there are some problems. Recently, a CQTV reporter did a survey(调查). Here are the results:
*The box is full of clothes in a short time. There is no more room for people to give away clothes.
*Some people sell the clothes in the donation box for making money instead of(而不是)wearing them.
*Some neighbourhood doesn’t set the box in right places, so there are few clothes in it.
In order to make the donation box work well, our city is trying to help out in different efficient(有效的)ways. Clothes donation will be better-organized and it’ll be better for people in need to take the clothes away.
1. Does Miss Wang often put her clothes out of style into the donation box?2. What can people do with the clothes in the donation box?
3. Please write down 2 ways to make clothes donation box work well.
8 . As we walk the “path (道路) of life”, we may sometimes wish to be alone with our own thoughts, for quiet moments of reflection can lead to personal improvement. However, when we want to be alone, we must be careful that we do not always jump into our own world. Social life is also important to all of us.
As we live in social groups, there are many benefits (益处) of friendship that we can enjoy. Generally speaking, close friendships have three “fruits”: they may comfort the heart, advise the head and help us achieve the goals we set for ourselves. Through friendship, we can become happier, wiser and more satisfied humans.
The first fruit of friendship is the peace that comes from sharing with friends our joy, sadness, success and failure. Here, friendship has a double advantage—happiness takes on a greater meaning and a trouble shared becomes a trouble halved! Naturally, this kind of openness results from a close friendship. We know that our friends will both respect our feelings and treasure these moments of closeness.
The second fruit of friendship is the better understanding and judgement that may be achieved through conversations with well-meaning and wise friends. We often find it easier to recognize other people’s weaknesses than our own. As a result, if we are guided only by our own feelings, our judgements (评判) might be one-sided. On the other hand, our friends are better able to offer advice on important decisions that we all have to make. This helps make our thoughts clearer and brings us a more thorough (彻底的) understanding of our problems .
The third fruit of friendship is the help that a friend may offer in many different ways. Sometimes a friend is even known as our “second self”. There are so many things in life that can only be achieved with the help of friends. Friends may have many different ideas and skills.
Finally, it should be pointed out that enjoying the company of a crowd is not the same as being with friends. Friends should be carefully chosen and relationships carefully developed. In this way, we can better walk the “path of life”with the comfort, advice and help from our trusted friends.
1. According to the passage, which of the following is NOT the “fruit” of close friendships?A.Comforting our hearts with peace. | B.Achieving our goals with friends’ help. |
C.Guiding our own feelings easily. | D.Understanding our problems better. |

9 . “Lying down” (also known as tang ping), has become a hot word among young Chinese people these days. The idea of low material needs and being willing to accept whatever life gives them is described as a “lying down” lifestyle.
Some young people complain that to raise a child needs too much money and they often get into a fight with their family. At the same time, the rising living costs including food and housing have pushed them so hard that they could hardly breathe. Some want to lie down because their tiring jobs, competition with peers, as well as personal relationships force them to run away.
On the other hand, with the great improvement of living conditions, it is true that some Chinese youth today have lost the spirit of fighting hard for a better life. “I stay at home, sleep and watch TV series, and I’m pleased with what I have now. Actually, there are many people around me who value happiness and freedom most,” said Daisy, who left her job two weeks ago. No wonder that some young people would choose to live a simple way instead of always following the good quality of fighting hard.
Interestingly, most young people, who are “big fans” of the “lying down” lifestyle, point out that they only accept a temporary (暂时的) lying down as a short rest. In fact, lying down is not totally comfortable for them. Most young people who lie down always regard it as a lack of ambition (雄心壮志) and feel ashamed (感到羞耻的) about it.
“Young people have both ambition and confusion (困惑) about their future, but most of us have refused to waste chances and challenges,” a college student said.
1. Do most young people really enjoy the “lying down” lifestyle according to the passage?2. What is a “lying-down” lifestyle?
3. Why do some young Chinese choose to “lie down” according to the passage?
4. Do you think the “lying down” lifestyle is the best way to deal with difficulties in your life? Why or why not?
What do you usually do in your free time? Play sports? Watch TV? How about reading books? A famous saying goes like this “Knowledge (知识) is power. And the knowledge is in the books.” Books are important in our life. Reading books is good for us. It can help us to be good at our subjects. Also, it can help us see a new and different world. All the great men like reading, like Zhou Enlai and Lu Xun.
Books are treasure (财富) and we must love them. But before you read, choose (选择) a good one. Ask your parents or teachers about the books to read. Be sure you are interested in them. There are many different kinds of books. I like history because I can learn something from it.
What about you? Young friends, please love books and read them. They are very helpful to you.
